Need honest opinions on Neville

I’m kinda crushing on [name_m]Neville[/name_m] right now. It fits with other nerdy names on my list ([name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] etc…), and the nickname Noddy has special meaning to me. However, I am worried it’s not usable, mainly because of HP, but also is it pushing the nerdy thing too far?. What do you guys think?

I’ve never seen [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] but there is a [name_m]Neville[/name_m] on ICarly that is really annoying. The names not really my style.

^That’s actually the first thing I thought of…haha.

If you like nerdy, how bout [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u]? Or [name_m]Eugene[/name_m]? Those are the nerdiest to me, personally. [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_m]Cyril[/name_m].

I immediately think of [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] [name_m]Neville[/name_m], but my guess would be most people won’t. Not familiar with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] or i[name_f]Carly[/name_f]. The name is not really my style.

[name_m]Neville[/name_m] is ALL [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] to me…but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, his character is quite nerdy, but by the end of the series, [name_m]Neville[/name_m] really comes into his own and learns to stand up for himself and the causes that are dear to him. I mean, he does behead Voldemort’s snake and speak out against Voldemort publically after [name_m]Harry[/name_m]'s presumed death…so he does turn out to be kind of a bad ass

I like it. [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] [name_m]Neville[/name_m] is my first association so I don’t think ‘nerdy’. It’s soulful and bluesy. I would expect [name_m]Neville[/name_m] to have siblings with names like [name_f]Etta[/name_f] or Cooke

I like the name [name_m]Neville[/name_m] because of HP. He’s a wonderful namesake and I adore the whole “nerdy chic” thing it’s got going on. If you want suggestions my favorite nerdy chic name is [name_m]Newton[/name_m]. It’s the most adorable name ever and you could still use the nn Noddy (omg, how cute is that!)

I definitely wouldn’t be worried about the HP reference, as people either don’t/won’t know it, or (as you’ve seen from the other comments) think he’s a great character in the books. He’s also not the lead character, so it’s not as defining as [name_m]Edward[/name_m] from Twilight or [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] from Divergent, in my opinion.

Noddy is a super cute nn, but may not translate when he’s older. His friends may just shorten to “[name_u]Nev[/name_u],” so be aware of that possibility.

But I think it’s a great name, and if you love it, go for it!

It’s not connected to any particular character for me, but I don’t like it much, I’m afraid.

[name_m]Neville[/name_m] is the nerdy middle-aged guy in the office who eats lunch with [name_m]Roger[/name_m], [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] and [name_m]Kevin[/name_m].

Isn’t that the name of one of the judges on Face Off? (googled it…) Yes, [name_m]Neville[/name_m] [name_u]Page[/name_u]. That association makes me like it. Definitely an interesting name.

I love it. Its really unique; I understand your love for nerdy old names. My fave nerdy name has to be [name_m]Darwin[/name_m]. [name_m]Neville[/name_m] is really unique and Noddy is even more so; its full of personality. Follow your heart guts!

I think it’s cute. Icarly was my first thought when I heard the name, but the show isn’t running anymore, and I thought the character was very funny. [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] was my next thought, but [name_m]Neville[/name_m] turned out to be kind of awesome, killing Nagini and all that, plus [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] is very attractive.
For me [name_m]Neville[/name_m] has all the same charm as [name_m]Nigel[/name_m], which I adore. I say it is definitely usable.

Try [name_m]Neville[/name_m] [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m], or [name_m]Neville[/name_m] [name_m]Leopold[/name_m], It is just so dashing.

Thumbs up! I think it is very usable. Yes, I think of HP (like everyone is saying, he is an awesome character) but I also knew a family by the name of [name_m]Neville[/name_m] growing up and they were great people. So, it’s all good associations for me.

I don’t like it all. I usually disagree with people when they say a kid would get bullied for their name, but [name_m]Neville[/name_m] . . . Sorry to say, but I think [name_m]Neville[/name_m] would really get it. I think most of the kids I know would think of the high voiced, annoying kid on i[name_f]Carly[/name_f] before they thought of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. That’s not to say that it’s completely unusable though! People get over that kind of thing after they’ve known the kid for a while. But I do feel like [name_m]Neville[/name_m] is a name that a kid has to have the right personality to be able to pull off.

I would probably agree that it’s unusable because of HP. Longbottom’s a pretty memorable character, and he’s got a very teasable association to the character’s last name.

Thanks for all the responses! Seems you guys are split - some love it, some hate it! I’m still not 100% sold on it, but it’s going on my list for now. Thanks, again, closing now.
