[name_m]Just[/name_m] for fun (still TTC)…help me add to my master list! We are a Wiccan family. We like names with either some feminist history to them (whether mythological, literary, or actual) or a link to nature, and prefer to avoid the US top 1000. Please help us think outside the box!
I love this style of names! What about [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Nimue[/name_f], [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f], [name_f]Morgana[/name_f], Naiade, [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], [name_u]Raven[/name_u], [name_f]Fae[/name_f], [name_f]Boheme[/name_f], [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]/[name_f]Arianwen[/name_f]/[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] (and so on), [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Azure[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Elora[/name_f], [name_f]Melusine[/name_f]/a, Larimar, [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] or [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]?
@saintdollface — wow, thanks for your lovely suggestions! I’ll go down one by one.
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] - great! I think I prefer [name_f]Thomasin[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] - DH loves. I may add this one!
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] - I adore this name but DH isn’t brave enough, lol (he grew up [name_m]Christian[/name_m])
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] - gorgeous, thank you!
[name_f]Elka[/name_f] - Very nice, not for me, maybe too short/too clunky?
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f] - my sister has dibs on this one! But fantastic suggestion!
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] - I want to love it but I just think of the poodle from [name_m]Clifford[/name_m] the Big [name_u]Red[/name_u] Dog, my niece’s favorite show
[name_f]Twila[/name_f] - Again, I want to love it, but the Twilight franchise ruined it for me
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Adore[/name_f] this! [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] has been a family name for generations so this would be great!
[name_f]Dextra[/name_f] - I just love it when I read or hear a name I’ve never been exposed to before. What a clever feminization. I’ll have to think some more on this one.
[name_f]Eris[/name_f] - I like where your head’s at, but doesn’t flow with our surname, sadly
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] - yes!
[name_u]Salem[/name_u] - still too cat name for me personally, but I think I’ll warm to it!
[name_f]Enid[/name_f] - I want to like it more, but I think a tad too clunky for me. I’d love to meet a little girl named [name_f]Enid[/name_f] though!
[name_f]Nephele[/name_f] - hmm, maybe. I do think of the book by [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] L’Engle about [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and his daughter
[name_f]Sabina[/name_f] - again, my sister has dibs (on [name_f]Sabine[/name_f]) but fantastic suggestion!
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - might be too popular for me
[name_f]Juno[/name_f] - I have another sister with a dog named [name_m]Bruno[/name_m] so it’s a no for me, though it fits well in this category!
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] - I used to love this soap opera called Passions when I was a little girl, and this [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] was a very ridiculous and unlikable hag. I would love to meet a little [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] though!
[name_f]Lux[/name_f] - I love it, but DH can’t get over that movie with [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] Dunst (the character commits suicide and orchestrates/influences the suicides of all of her sisters too)
I’m so grateful for your time. You got my style exactly right!
@nerea, I started to reply but it got deleted! So sorry if I don’t give as much detail. I do want to say thank you for your ideas! I’m glad we share similar tastes
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] - DH not brave enough (yet!)
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] - cute! Maybe a tad too cute for me.
[name_f]Nimue[/name_f]- swoon love it!
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] - definitely adding!
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] - yes!
Naiade - I actually had to look this up. Like a water nymph, right? Very intriguing!
[name_f]Meadow[/name_f] - I want to love it but I can’t get over the Sopranos connection (my parents’ fave TV show when I was growing up)
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f] - cute! Only I’m allergic lol
[name_u]Raven[/name_u] - considered cultural appropriation in my area. But I do like the name.
[name_f]Fae[/name_f] - yes!
[name_f]Boheme[/name_f] - like but maybe a bit too hipster even for me wink
Welsh names - I like in general, yep!
[name_u]Sage[/name_u] - I like, maybe too short for me. Could be a great middle!
[name_f]Azure[/name_f] - my kids will likely have blue eyes so this is nice!
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] - got one in the family already!
[name_f]Elora[/name_f] - hmm, maybe!
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f] - swoon I have loved this name forever and a day but DH hasn’t gotten on board yet. (I read a lot of [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]) I’ll keep trying!
Larimar- reads masculine to me for some reason. I think my mind jumps to [name_m]Lamar[/name_m] [name_m]Burton[/name_m]! Lol
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f] - beautiful but I don’t personally care for names that lend themselves to a [name_f]Dora[/name_f] nickname
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] - maybe too Hebrew for me? But lovely for someone else!
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] - we have one in the family! I want to try not to repeat cousins. But yes I love it.
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f] - yes!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f], Illyria, [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f], and [name_f]Sancia[/name_f] from your list (nice to see some appreciation for [name_f]Sancia[/name_f]!)
@geeknamezyo - I have seen some of your older posts and I gotta say, I just love your style! Thanks for the comments on those 4 names from my list. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like them! I’ll address each of your new suggestions too.
[name_f]Atalanta[/name_f] - I want to love it, the story is great, but I keep seeing the American city [name_f]Atlanta[/name_f]
Belphoebe - awesome!
[name_f]Callisto[/name_f] - very nice. I’ll have to think some more on the “o” ending.
[name_f]Columbine[/name_f]/[name_f]Colombina[/name_f] - unfortunately still too tied to the school shooting
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - I love the look and meaning, but I don’t care for the sound/pronunciation
[name_f]Fawn[/name_f]/[name_f]Faun[/name_f] - yes!
[name_f]Fenella[/name_f] - I like this, and love the nickname Fen (hello, The Magicians!) but hesitating about the “-[name_f]Ella[/name_f]” ending for some reason
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] - gorgeous! But a tad too clunky
[name_u]Hero[/name_u] - fabulous, adding to the list!
[name_f]Meliora[/name_f] - hmm, I will have to think about this. I wouldn’t want it shortened to [name_u]Mel[/name_u].
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - I adore this name but DH says he doesn’t like the “my nerves” sound to it
[name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] - so fierce! [name_u]Love[/name_u].
Nettle - Perhaps a bit too in-your-face witchy? Usually I don’t mind but I think a woman should have some air of mystery to her wink
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] - lovely for someone else. I keep seeing “lymph” though.
[name_f]Ozma[/name_f] - too clunky, but I love the idea of it and I love your thought process behind this suggestion.
[name_f]Romola[/name_f] - hmm, I’ll have to think about this one. Intriguing for sure.
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] - DH likes the Firefly connection but says it’s a stripper name I do really like it though!
[name_f]Saskia[/name_f] - great! Conjures imagery of sled dogs racing through the snow under the Northern Lights
[name_f]Senara[/name_f] - hmm, maybe. I do love S names, and I’ll ponder this one.
[name_u]Seren[/name_u] - great!
[name_u]Sorrel[/name_u] - reads a bit masculine to me
[name_f]Tamarind[/name_f] - fits the style perfectly but I had a bad experience with a [name_f]Tammy[/name_f]
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] - interesting! It reminds me of [name_f]Princess[/name_f] Diaries for some reason, lol
[name_f]Zora[/name_f] - great! I like the author. I may add this.
My daughter is [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], which has already been suggested, and if I ever have a second daughter, I’m pretty sure her name will be [name_f]Morgaine[/name_f]/[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] - as feminist and badass as you can get. [name_f]Ferelith[/name_f], [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f], [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f], [name_f]Timothea[/name_f], [name_f]Anatolia[/name_f] and [name_f]Althea[/name_f] are some other names I really like.
@theelegantemerald - Faeryn is pretty but not quite my style. Maybe too cute. I like your combo with [name_f]Elise[/name_f] though
@thefairophelia - [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] is fabulous. [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] is stunning, congratulations! I agree that [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] (etc) is badass [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_f]Morgaine[/name_f]? Like more-GAIN rhymes with rain? Or Morg-[name_f]Anya[/name_f]? Or Mor-GEHN rhymes with ten? Etc…?
Your other suggestions are lovely too! [name_f]Ferelith[/name_f] doesn’t flow with our last name but is otherwise wonderful. I actually love Elsinore from your signature, and I never thought of using Vix as a nickname for [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], how clever!
I pronounce [name_f]Morgaine[/name_f] like “more-GAIN”, it rhymes with rain more than with ten. I got it from The Mists of [name_f]Avalon[/name_f], and this is how they pronounce it in the movie.
And thanks! [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is my name, but nobody calls me [name_f]Vicky[/name_f] or [name_f]Tory[/name_f], only Vix - I don’t remember how it all started, but I think Vix was originally short for Vixen…
@snowyowlgal - Thanks for your post! I too love Hecate but it would be a bit like naming a kid [name_m]Jesus[/name_m] (for me personally). I do like other goddess names though!
[name_f]Nerissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Nerida[/name_f]
[name_f]Acacia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Diantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Ione[/name_f]
[name_f]Kalina[/name_f]
[name_f]Oriana[/name_f]
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhea[/name_f] (barely in the top 1000)
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] (barely in the top 1000)
[name_f]Senna[/name_f]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Thessaly[/name_f]
[name_f]Leda[/name_f]
I don’t know if I’m capturing your style, but what about
[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f] (the sea in Ancient Greek mythology, gave birth to [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]). I pronounce this Ta-la-SAH. I am not sure if that is the common American pronounciation or not? English is not my first language.
[name_f]Boudicca[/name_f] (the ancient warrior from [name_m]Britain[/name_m]). If you live in the UK then this would be too much. But if you’re in the US or somewhere else, it would be a bad ass choice in m opinion.
Eileithyia/Ilithyia/Elusia - an Ancient Greek goddess, the word literally means the Bringer. She brings life from the darkness, into the light. She was the goddess of childbirth, and her cult may have gone back to Neolithic, pre-Greek, times.
Thanks for the reply! I like [name_f]Luna[/name_f] but we have one in the family already. [name_f]Nova[/name_f] is a bit too short for my taste but could be a great middle. [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] throws me off because it seems trendy at the moment, and I think of [name_f]Junie[/name_f] B [name_m]Jones[/name_m]. [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] appeals because it strikes me as Puritan and I’m a fan of irony, but I do find the overall look and sound slightly clunky. [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] is great. [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] is brilliant, I never thought of that. Thank you!
You know, the Wiccans I have met before all really creeped me out and were not nice people but you sound quite lovely! I hope that’s not offensive… I don’t mean it to be! I love how you communicate and are so kind with your responses to everyone :). It’s healing to me :). I super ADOOORRRREEE Nature and I’m trying to get over my fear of faeries (put there by a bad experience with a sketchy person who also tried to get me to stop working with angels because she hated how “bright and shiny” I was. Weird hey?) because I’ve been told for years I have faerie energy around me and I have seen them and worked with them before (elemental soul heritage ). Anywhosits lol
It’s really cool to see someone else with Celandine on their list! I love it. So here’s some ideas from my list you might like:
[name_u]Cedar[/name_u] - depends on who you are, to me and my hubby it’s femenine and our frontrunner
Phaenna/Faena
Eriantha - a bit clunky for me but I like the idea of it
[name_f]Starling[/name_f]
Wilderness - probably middle name
Leore/[name_f]Leora[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] - if you can get past the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connection
Elsinor/e - I love that you grabbed that from pp signature. I was totally going to suggest it if you didn’t
[name_f]Annora[/name_f]
[name_f]Hera[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] - previously mention but I love it
[name_m]Emrys[/name_m] - from the show [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] so maybe a tad masculine but could sound great for girl too and definitely magical mystical. Female badass [name_m]Merlin[/name_m]!
[name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_f]Aspen[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
And I have a ton of Nature names from weeks of scrounging if you want them? Perhaps for middle names or you could use them to make cool mashups that feel mystical to you (depending on how brave hubby is ) like Stonewind, Pineforest, Earthbrook, Wildsage etc. Let me know and I’ll comment again with them
