With our first 2 boys we used a family name for the middle name. For our first [name_m]Caden[/name_m] [name_m]Alan[/name_m] - both grandfathers had the middle name [name_m]Alan[/name_m]. For our second [name_m]Nolan[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] - both sides of the family had a great grandfather with the middle name [name_m]Henry[/name_m].
Now with this one we have the other great grandfathers of [name_m]Louis[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_m]Lester[/name_m] [name_m]Otto[/name_m] or their fathers of [name_m]Albert[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] or [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Hans[/name_m]. We really don’t love any of the family names… and are not set in stone on the first name. Other first names we were considering were [name_m]Austin[/name_m], [name_u]Wade[/name_u], or [name_u]Leland[/name_u].
Really leaning towards [name_u]Evan[/name_u] as the first name, which we realize this is a variation of [name_m]John[/name_m] as is [name_m]Hans[/name_m] and wouldn’t want to go with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] as the meanings of the name are similar. Not sure I like the flow of [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Otto[/name_m]. We thought about mixing family names together for a new one…
If you don’t love your family name options, don’t use them. [name_u]Evan[/name_u] honors [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_m]Hans[/name_m]. Perhaps a family surname would work better? [name_f]Do[/name_f] any of the grandmothers have a usable maiden name?
My Maiden name is [name_m]Ross[/name_m] which my sister already used as a middle name for her son. Grandmother maiden names are [name_m]Parr[/name_m] and Lutt and great grandmothers Schenk, Sila, Metcalf and Granquist. So not really…
You could do [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Silas[/name_m], to honor the Sila grandmother. Or [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_u]Parker[/name_u] for [name_m]Parr[/name_m]. [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] for Schnek. [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Luther[/name_m] for Lutt. [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Grant[/name_m] for Granquist. Or [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] (uses ‘met’), [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] (similar sound), [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Angus[/name_m] (it’s a stretch on the cow theme), [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] (“metcalf” means herdsman so [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] isn’t a stretch) for Metcalf. You could also do [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] as a play on [name_m]Ross[/name_m].
What about [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Leo[/name_m]?
[name_u]Evan[/name_u] would come from [name_m]John[/name_m], and [name_m]Leo[/name_m] would nod to both Louis Theodore and [name_m]Le[/name_m]ster [name_m]Ott[/name_m]o.
Thank you for the great suggestions. I like [name_m]Leo[/name_m] but husband not so much. We do like the idea of using a name that has a similar sound to a maiden name of a grandmother. We already honored a [name_m]Parr[/name_m] so leaning towards something for Lutt Granquist or Schenk.
