We are looking for a name for a sister to our two sons, [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] ([name_u]Sam[/name_u]) and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] ([name_m]Joe[/name_m]). We love nicknames and our boys have always gone by theirs.
Here are names we like but please suggest yours!
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f])
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] (no nickname we can think of)
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f])
We really don’ t love any of these names so please help!
I think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], nicknamed [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]/[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] makes more sense; it matches [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] perfectly.
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] stands on its own, but it could be short for Claritia, [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f], [name_f]Clarice[/name_f], [name_f]Clarinda[/name_f], [name_f]Claribel[/name_f], Clarimond, [name_f]Clarity[/name_f] or [name_f]Claretta[/name_f] (none of which sound as classic as [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], though); I nice way to shorten it would be too use a double name ([name_f]Clara[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Clara[/name_f]-[name_f]Eve[/name_f]?)
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] “[name_f]Evie[/name_f]” is nice too.
dont have any suggestions as we are having the same issue! Girl nicknames either turn too frilly or aren’t near as good as the original name. Or I like the nickname but not the long form.
Some of the ones we have considered are:
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Nora[/name_f]”
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f] “[name_f]Lainey[/name_f]”
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] “[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Nola[/name_f]”
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] “[name_f]Annie[/name_f]”
[name_f]My[/name_f] daughter is [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (and my other daughter is [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] nn Phae). I had visions of calling her [name_m]Clay[/name_m] for short (Phae and [name_m]Clay[/name_m]), but [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] calls her [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] (in toddler-speak), so we ended up nicknaming her [name_u]Kai[/name_u].
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (n [name_f]Bea[/name_f])
We really love the 3-letter nicknames (to go with our sons, [name_u]Sam[/name_u] and [name_m]Joe[/name_m]).
With [name_u]Sam[/name_u] and [name_m]Joe[/name_m], I like [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u]. [name_u]Sam[/name_u], [name_m]Joe[/name_m], and [name_u]Lou[/name_u] sound like a trio of gangsters, which is kind of cute. But [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f] is also lovely. [name_u]Ali[/name_u] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] are a little generic imo.
I would go with a feminine name, like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] nickname [name_u]Abby[/name_u]. I would stay away from any unisex or male-sounding nicknames, like [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]/[name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]/[name_f]Toni[/name_f], etc. because people will think you have three boys.
I like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] ([name_u]Abby[/name_u]). I also like your idea of [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f]). Other suggestions:
My personal favourites are:
Matilda (I love Millie)
Harriet (Hattie)
Winifred (Winnie)
Clementine (Cleo)
Penelope (Penny)
Felicity (Flick)
Beatrix (Trixie)
PS: I like Beatrice out of your names. (I actually like Alice the most but would not shorten it-it is to the point already and so lovely).
I also would say you need a pattern at all with your nick names-in fact it is rather nice if your girl has a pattern of her own. As long as the styles fit ok together!
