Nehemiah šŸˆā€ā¬›

I love it as an honor (it was my best pal’s ā€˜boy name’ if she’d been AMAB)! But, it’s a lot of name. So, questions:

(1) What are your nickname ideas for Nehemiah? I don’t like Neo (but is that super intuitive as a nickname?). Is… Nemo too egregious? I’m leaning yes. What else do you think?

(2) How do you pronounce Nehemiah?

  • neh-heh-MY-uh
  • nee-uh-MY-uh
  • I go between those two.
  • Other?

(3) What do you like about the name? What things does it make you think of when you hear it? Does it feel wearable?

Nehemiah isn’t really on my list, but I do think it’s sweet and intriguing. I don’t see it on NB much, so I’m curious to poke at the hive mind! Thanks, y’all. Hugs.

i think i’d default to nemmy as a nickname! or maybe emmy (:

i think it definitely works in the states! i’d assume the parents were very religious and it generally has a very american christian feel to me, so it’s not my cup of tea, but i’m also not the person to ask this question since i don’t like any of the -iah names

  1. I don’t think [name_m]Nemo[/name_m] is too egregious but I don’t exactly love it either. Other ideas could be [name_f]Nim[/name_f], [name_m]Nye[/name_m], or [name_f]Niah[/name_f] (nye-uh)? [name_u]Nima[/name_u] could also be sweet, although it has totally different origins (I think the reason I don’t find [name_m]Nemo[/name_m] too egregious is because it’s so similar to [name_u]Nima[/name_u] which I think is lovely).

  2. neh-heh-MY-uh

  3. I would say I like it for someone else – I like the gentle sound it has, and think it looks cool. It feels usable to me in the US. It does feel quite religious to me, though less so than similar names like [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] or [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m].

I didn’t answer the poll, because this is one of the names I continually forget how to pronounce and my brain defaults to a lazy Nuh-MY-uh when I skip read it. When I have looked up and listened to how it’s PN, I adore it. It sounds so gentle. I get the same religious feel as @tallemaja explained.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the suggestion of [name_m]Nye[/name_m] as a nn. What about [name_f]Miah[/name_f]?

1–Hemi? [name_f]Niah[/name_f]? [name_m]Nemo[/name_m] is…okay for a little kid nn I think…I’d probably go with ā€œNye-uhā€ (Niah) though

[name_u]Nehemiah[/name_u] nicknames:

Nimmo?
Nemmy
Nem
Nie/Nye
[name_m]Ned[/name_m]?

It’s a bold choice, but it doesn’t feel totally outlandish. It feels distinctly Biblical with a hint of something literary or magical about it?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

I think it’s pretty! But in a very masculine way. I don’t think it’s too much of a name. It’s unique but not weird. And it works well at any age. I like Nemo; it’s cute…maybe very cute? Could you do the nn [name_u]Nico[/name_u]? It’s a stretch, but feels more polished for an adult.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

This is actually one of my friends top names! I think it’s so underused. They like [name_u]Nehemiah[/name_u] nn [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and [name_f]Niah[/name_f] (NEE-ah). I prn it as nee-hem-EYE-ah. I think it’s wearable, it’s one of the more heavy biblical names, heavier but wearable. [name_f]Kinda[/name_f] goes in the same group as [name_u]Azariah[/name_u], [name_m]Zechariah[/name_m], [name_u]Thaddeus[/name_u], heavy, dramatic but wearable

[name_u]Nehemiah[/name_u] has really been growing on me the last few months! I’d pronounce it like @/leafygreens, nee-hem-eye-uh, or nee-him-eye-uh (it’s not a major difference). As far as nicknames, I actually really like [name_m]Nemo[/name_m]! If you’re okay with a stretch maybe Neeley? It’s a tough one to nickname! [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought when I hear [name_u]Nehemiah[/name_u] is the Biblical character, but that’s a positive association for me. It’s heavy, but I don’t think unwearable, especially if you find a cute nickname for it!

i LOVE nehemiah! it’s high on my list and there are some days i can honestly see my first son being named nehemiah eventually lol

less common/used bible names are pretty in style rn (at least where i am), and nehemiah isn’t hard to spell or pronounce so i think it’s totally wearable! i do think of the bible book because it’s one of my favorites.

i sort of prn it between ā€œnee uh MY uhā€ and ā€œnee heh MY uhā€ if that makes sense. but it sounds closer to the first option

tbh, i’ve always thought nemo would be a cute nickname for it but i can see how it would be fishy to some people  a previous poster’s suggestion of nemmy is sweet!
