New data from Australia

The top 100 boys’ and girls’ names of 2018 in NSW are now available on the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages’ website:

The nationwide data is not yet available (the 2018 national report, which can be accessed at https://mccrindle.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Baby-Names-Report-2018.pdf, refers to births in 2017).

Comparing the 2017 data from NSW and the nationwide data, we can see that some names - [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_f]Hayley[/name_f], for instance - are more common in NSW than elsewhere (neither ranked in the national top 100 in 2017).

For 2018, I’m particularly interested to see [name_f]Kiara[/name_f] enter the NSW top 100 for girls, and [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m] for boys: neither made the national list for 2017. NSW is the most populous state in Australia, home to over 30% of Australians. It will be interesting to see whether that’s enough to boost [name_f]Kiara[/name_f] and [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m] into the national top 100.

[name_m]How[/name_m] do these lists compare to where you live?

I was surprised to see [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] yet a name most appealing at least to me is not on there ([name_f]Sylvie[/name_f])

I think Sylvie’s lovely, too! I’m probably biased, though: it’s a family name for me. I haven’t met any little Sylvies, but I’d love to.
Actually, only one of the babies I’ve met lately has a name in the 2018 NSW data or the 2017 national data (i.e. the data in the 2018 McCrindle report. It’s a little confusing that McCrindle use the year the data’s published and BD&M use the year the babies were born).
I must live in an unusual naming bubble
