New List for Baby Boy: Quirky & Sassy

We changed or minds (or my boyfriend did) so we are starting over again with names for our baby. His main issue was that the names didn’t feel like names, so I’ve tried to find names that feel like names (does that make sense at all?). There are lots of them, I know, so I don’t expect anyone to comment on all on them, just tell me what you think whichever way you want. And we’re open to suggestions as well, if there’s anything you think we might like (I know this is pretty all over the place). We will probably have a quirky, sassy, bookish and independent little child.

… the list… (updated list on page 5, post #45!)

Did you have a gender ultrasound and find out for sure, or are you finding out the sex of the baby at birth and choosing one combo for each sex?

Have a healthy, happy remainder of your pregnancy!

[name]Ulric[/name], [name]Ulysses[/name]
[name]Verne[/name], [name]Virgil[/name]
[name]Xavi[/name]

These are [name]IMO[/name] very quirky, sassy, bookish and independent as well as having the Feeling of a Name  I [name]Love[/name] them all!

My favorites (and why):

[name]Altair[/name] - the astronomical connection, the symbolism, and the beautiful pronunciation make this one a favorite for me.
[name]Anselm[/name] - a strong, warrioresque sound, and love the meaning “divine protection” … also reminds me of Kingdom Hearts because of the similarity to Ansem, which I love (even though he was the villain)
[name]Casimir[/name] - love the “peacekeeper” meaning, and it’s definitely a bookish name with sass. Also reminds me of the [name]Kashmir[/name] song
[name]Constantine[/name] - GP of mine for a long time. I’d like to say it’s because of the emperor, but really it’s because of the [name]Keanu[/name] [name]Reeves[/name] movie >>
[name]Damon[/name] - I’ve long loved [name]Damon[/name], [name]Damian[/name], [name]Darien[/name], and cousins. This affection is in no way hindered by the smoking bad boy vampire who bears the name in TVD
[name]Evander[/name] - packed with history and mythos. Check out the [name]Evander[/name] entry in the Bewitching Names blog if you want to fall for this one even harder
[name]Felix[/name] - I love the happy, quirky, upbeat meaning of this name. It’s so fun to say and for some reason the image that always comes to mind is a dignified tabby cat with glasses perched on the end of his nose. I’m just weird like that.
[name]Herne[/name] - I’m too in love with this one. [name]Shakespeare[/name], hunter mythos, wild woods, an antlered ghost, connections with the Woden and Cernunnos…I mean this name is a treasure trove!
[name]Hugo[/name] - so many literary connections…my personal favorite being The Invention of [name]Hugo[/name] Cabret. [name]Just[/name] the sort of person I can see you mothering.
[name]Leopold[/name] - in my mind, [name]Leopold[/name] is firmly affixed as the quintessential gentleman, entirely due to [name]Kate[/name] and [name]Leopold[/name], I’m sure
[name]Lucius[/name] - a GP for me…I love the paradox of this name, that it means “light” but it’s associated with so many dark and mysterious characters.
[name]Octavian[/name] - Have you read the Codex Alera series?? If not, you absolutely must. I will always associate this name with the full body chill bumps that come with a perfect plot twist!
[name]Orion[/name] - I don’t think my love of [name]Orion[/name] needs any explanation or justification. [name]Orion[/name] [name]Melchior[/name] [name]North[/name] will forever be stamped on my brain as the ultimate in magical boy names.
[name]Phineas[/name] - I have a good friend named [name]Phineas[/name], so I associate it with scholarly intelligence and wry humor. It also reminds me of all the quirky, inventive, adventurous escapades of the popular cartoon [name]Phineas[/name] and Ferb.
[name]Quintin[/name] - very quirky bookish vibe. I also love the nn [name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Rainier[/name] - a beautiful name with a powerful family connection for you. Keep this one!
Remiel - angel of mercy in all his dreamy, starry perfection
[name]Robin[/name] - I know you have mad love for [name]Robin[/name] Hood! Let’s see if we can’t make him a winner this time around
[name]Rupert[/name] - I think of [name]Rupert[/name] [name]Giles[/name], the strongest, most compassionate, self-sacrificing, demon-slaying, all around amazing librarian ever in the history of television ^
^
[name]Serafim[/name] - I am in love with this name, so I included it in this list of faves despite my concerns. I’m not sure how this name is perceived in your area, but in mine it skews feminine and fairy-like.
[name]Silvanus[/name] - I’m glad to see a form of [name]Sylvan[/name] on your list, because I love the wild woods association and the silvery sound.
[name]Socrates[/name] - a more daring choice, but I love it! Studiously quirky, in a very cool way. I love names like this, and Archimedes, and Copernicus…
[name]Theron[/name] - So glad to see him again! [name]One[/name] of my favorite sites lists him as meaning “untamed hunter”…very My Side of the Mountain!
[name]Thoreau[/name] - dreamy, nature-rich, and literary. a perfect trifecta.
[name]Tiberius[/name] - love the ancient Romanesque sound and the watery associations

I love this list. I had to just sit there and LOOK at it for a while. A lot to process! I’m not going to sing the praises of all the beauties yet. [name]Just[/name] going to be harsh, in the interest of helping you eliminate. Some of my reasons for the no’s are a bit iffy, but here goes:

yes: [name]Aloysius[/name], [name]Altair[/name], [name]Anselm[/name], [name]Ambrose[/name], [name]Aurelian[/name]
no: [name]Alexis[/name] ('80s), Arronax (sounds like a lawn-fertilizer)

no: Eusebios (a mouthful)

yes: Faramond, [name]Felix[/name]

yes: [name]Hadrian[/name], [name]Heath[/name], [name]Hector[/name], [name]Hermes[/name], [name]Herne[/name], [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Horatio[/name]

yes: [name]Idris[/name], [name]Ignatius[/name], [name]Isidore[/name], [name]Ivan[/name]
no: [name]Ilan[/name] (too wispy)

yes: [name]Julian[/name] nn [name]Jules[/name], [name]Junot[/name]
no: [name]Jason[/name] (like [name]Diana[/name], it’s lost something)

yes: [name]Lucius[/name] (or [name]Lucien[/name]!)
no: [name]Leopold[/name] (too macho-kingly), [name]Lysander[/name] (velvet pantaloons)

no: [name]Marcus[/name] (falls flat for me)

no: [name]Nestor[/name] (A great literary namesake, but it rhymes with molester… I imagine a [name]Nestor[/name] having big nostrils)

yes: [name]Orion[/name], [name]Orlando[/name], Otterley!! yes.
no: [name]Octavian[/name] (same as [name]Leopold[/name]- over-the-top regal), [name]Ovid[/name] (I think of all things ovary-related)

yes: [name]Percival[/name], [name]Perseus[/name], [name]Phineas[/name]
no: Pelleas (“bilious”)

yes: [name]Quintin[/name]

yes: [name]Rainier[/name], Remiel, [name]Robin[/name], [name]Roland[/name], [name]Roscoe[/name], [name]Rufus[/name]
no: [name]Roderick[/name] (something very “bodice-ripper” about this name), [name]Rupert[/name] (too nerdy)

yes: [name]Silvanus[/name]
no: [name]Seneca[/name], [name]Senna[/name], [name]Serafim[/name] (all a bit feminine) [name]Socrates[/name] (one-man name)

yes: [name]Theron[/name], [name]Tiberius[/name], [name]Tristram[/name]
no: [name]Thoreau[/name] (kind of prefer [name]Walden[/name], or [name]Henri[/name]-[name]David[/name], to give the name a little French zhuzhing), [name]Tarquin[/name] (I like it, but confused about the namesake)

yes: [name]Ulysses[/name]
no: [name]Ulric[/name] (too vampiric)

yes: [name]Verne[/name] (love!), [name]Virgil[/name]
no: [name]Vasiliy[/name] (Nijinsky? Vaseline? It’s a toss-up), Vieri, Villads (too villainous)

no: [name]Xavi[/name] (as a nn for [name]Xavier[/name]?)

[name]Byron[/name]
[name]Cato[/name]
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Damon[/name]
[name]Evander[/name]
[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Leopold[/name]

[name]Aurelian[/name]
[name]Bertram[/name]
[name]Byron[/name]
[name]Casimir[/name]
[name]Cato[/name]
[name]Clement[/name] (would select over gender-confusing [name]Clemens[/name]- but put [name]Clemency[/name] back on the girls’ list!)
[name]Constantine[/name]
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Ephraim[/name]
[name]Etienne[/name] (this one should be cleanly pronounced)
[name]Evander[/name]
Faramond
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Hadrian[/name]
[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Hector[/name]
[name]Herne[/name]

[name]Lysander[/name]
[name]Octavian[/name]
[name]Orlando[/name]
[name]Perseus[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name]
[name]Quentin[/name] (spelled thusly)
[name]Rainier[/name] (and [name]Ragnar[/name])
Remiel
[name]Roland[/name]
[name]Theron[/name]
[name]Thoreau[/name]
[name]Tiberius[/name]
[name]Tristram[/name]
[name]Ulric[/name]
[name]Ulysses[/name]

No

[name]Alexis[/name] (80s [name]Valley[/name] Girl name)
[name]Aloysius[/name] (unless you’re devoutly Catholic, there are better names by far on your list)
Arronax (not namey enough-- this belonged on the first
[name]Cecil[/name] (too nerdy, mushy hissy aesthetics)
[name]Cicero[/name] (also hissy, one-man-name)
[name]Damon[/name] (prefer [name]Damian[/name])
[name]Dante[/name] (not the right imagery-- this name has been adopted and has a different modern valence)
[name]Didier[/name] (will be constantly mispronounced in the UK; you have better choices)
[name]Dominic[/name] (lovely name, but too Catholic for your family)
Eusebius (not usable)
[name]Everard[/name] (it’s lovely but quickly becomes ‘ever hard,’ terrific porn name
[name]Gaius[/name] (gay)
[name]Hermes[/name] (major deity)
[name]Ilan[/name] (you said no overtly Hebrew names earlier)
[name]Ignatius[/name] (too overtly Catholic-- do you like [name]Inigo[/name] though, like st [name]Ignatius[/name]’ birth name?)
[name]Ivan[/name] (all the wrong imagery)
[name]Jason[/name] (no longer carries the classical imagery you’re after, much like
[name]Junot[/name] (one-man name via [name]Junot[/name] [name]Diaz[/name])
[name]Lucius[/name] (too [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], would solidly back [name]Lucian[/name] though)
[name]Marcus[/name] (I love [name]Marcus[/name] [name]Aurelius[/name], but not the right imagery)
[name]Nestor[/name] (nests, plus he was a heretic :))
[name]Orion[/name] (belonged on first list)
Otterley (way too close to your name)
[name]Ovid[/name] (eggs! Eggs! Eggs!)
Pelleas (sounds like alas; much prefer [name]Melisande[/name])
[name]Percival[/name] (not wearable)
[name]Roderick[/name] (imagery majorly clashes)
[name]Roscoe[/name] (I had no idea you lived in [name]Alabama[/name]!)
[name]Rufus[/name] (only Mr [name]Wainwright[/name] can make this cool)
[name]Rupert[/name] (twerpy)
[name]Robin[/name] (is this genuinely unisex nowadays? Could a modern English boy be called [name]Robin[/name]?)
[name]Seneca[/name] (not wearable)
[name]Senna[/name] (ts is a famous laxative)
[name]Serafim[/name] (I know some Russian Serafims, all monks; not a realistic choice for a modern English boy)
[name]Silvanus[/name] (too archaic-- [name]Sylvan[/name] for sure!)
[name]Socrates[/name] (one-man name)
[name]Tarquin[/name] (he was so evil!)
[name]Vasiliy[/name] (much prefer [name]Basil[/name])
[name]Verne[/name] (you have [name]Jules[/name]; this is quite the bumpkin name in the States)
Vieri (not wearable)
Villads (ditto)
[name]Virgil[/name] (virgin, not cool)
[name]Xavi[/name] (not [name]Xavier[/name]?)

Incidentally, are there other family members besides your grandfather whom you’d like to consider honoring?

[name]Ambrose[/name] fits your criteria perfectly!

Here are my faves that I think, [name]IMO[/name], are the most wearable. I’m also keeping in mind you’re in [name]England[/name], so you can get away with certain names more than in the US (like [name]Roscoe[/name])!

[name]Altair[/name] - this would sound dorky with an American accent (ya mean like a church altar?), but very sophistocated in UK
[name]Anselm[/name]
[name]Bertram[/name]
[name]Byron[/name]
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Dante[/name]
[name]Evander[/name]
[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Ivan[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Leopold[/name]
[name]Lysander[/name]
[name]Octavian[/name]
[name]Roscoe[/name]

Names that sound like names, for a quirky, sassy, bookish, independent child:

[name]Anselm[/name] (a little old-mannish tho)
[name]Cecil[/name]
[name]Dominic[/name]
[name]Evander[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Hadrian[/name], [name]Heath[/name] ([name]Hugo[/name] fits but I just don’t really like it)
[name]Julian[/name]/[name]Jules[/name]
[name]Leopold[/name], [name]Lysander[/name]
[name]Orion[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name]
[name]Robin[/name]
[name]Senna[/name]
[name]Verne[/name], [name]Virgil[/name]

My favorites for you are [name]Cecil[/name], [name]Felix[/name], [name]Dominic[/name], [name]Virgil[/name], and [name]Robin[/name].

Some new ones to consider: [name]Reuben[/name], [name]Calvin[/name], [name]Charles[/name], [name]Theodore[/name].

Here are the ones I like for the boys list for you:

[name]Ambrose[/name]*
[name]Bertram[/name]*
[name]Dante[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Ignatius[/name]
[name]Orion[/name]*
[name]Percival[/name]*
[name]Phineas[/name]*
[name]Roderick[/name]
[name]Roscoe[/name]*
[name]Theron[/name]
[name]Ulric[/name]

YAY THE LIST! That day or so of waiting was much too long for me… I’m so exicted. I have to say, some of [name]Emma[/name]'s comments just made me laugh out loud (especially [name]Roderick[/name], haha). For the sake of simplicity and positivity I am only going to list names that I like, and leave the ones I don’t off for now. I’ll give stonger opionions/descriptions when it’s been narrowed down a bit:

*[name]Altair[/name]- I have come around to this one and I think it’s gorgeous. The clear winner out of all the A-names in my opinion.
*[name]Casimir[/name]- [name]How[/name] was this never on the list until now?? It is to die for! This gets a huge, huge thumbs up from me.
[name]Damon[/name]- I’ve always liked this name based on sound alone. I am partial to the [name]Damien[/name], [name]Darren[/name], [name]Desmond[/name] train of thought.
[name]Dominic[/name]- That this is even on your list I am taking as a huge compliment to myself, but I doubt I get a real vote. (Biased- I love it)
[name]Ephraim[/name]- In general, I am a usually a big fan of this name, though I’m just not sure it gives me the “magical [name]Ottilie[/name] baby” vibe
*[name]Evander[/name]- So gentlemanly and lovely. Such a great meaning and vowels everywhere! (I like this more than [name]Lysander[/name] and [name]Everard[/name])
[name]Hadrian[/name]- Beautiful. So many of the sounds that I know you like, but didn’t you say your little guy will most likely be blonde?
*[name]Heath[/name]- I love this. As a nature name I give this a glowing recommendation. I know a [name]Heath[/name] and he is the sweetest!
[name]Hector[/name]- Strong, awesome, [name]Eric[/name] Bana, awesome, maybe not quite distinct enough? Awesome, but maybe as a mn? I couldn’t decide.
[name]Herne[/name]- I can’t help but love this, but the only issue I wonder about is your one-syllable last name. (I also like [name]Verne[/name] but not as much)
[name]Julian[/name]- Soft and sweet, and a good way to get the nn [name]Jules[/name] (which unfortunately I don’t think you can use by itself.)
[name]Leopold[/name]- Super handsome choice. It sounds the most suave and dignified of all the [name]Leo[/name] names if you ask me, and I like [name]Leo[/name] names.
*[name]Orion[/name]- I love it. You know I love it. I am happy he gets a second chance back on the list! =]
*[name]Phineas[/name]- [name]Ah[/name], a family name from the noble and most ancient house of [name]Black[/name]! But seriously(lol) ‘[name]Phineas[/name] and Ferb’ is the greatest children’s show on right now and he is an awesome character. I thoroughly look forward to watching it… so amusing and adorable.
[name]Rainier[/name]- I love this for you mostly because of the connection to your grandfather, but I definitely think it’s a strong contender.
*Remiel- Gorgeous. [name]Ethereal[/name] and wonderful. Has [name]Gabriel[/name] ever been suggested or eliminated for you guys?
*[name]Roland[/name]- Epic epic epic! [name]Orlando[/name] might work for you too but that is literally the city I live in so I can’t see it objectively as a name…
[name]Theron[/name]- Has one of the softest sounds for such a strong hunter name, and I do think it would work well as a first.

I really love all of the H names and the R’s. These I would use as middles: [name]Aurelian[/name], [name]Byron[/name], [name]Cicero[/name], [name]Dante[/name], [name]Didier[/name], [name]Etienne[/name], Faramond, [name]Isidore[/name], [name]Jason[/name], [name]Perseus[/name], [name]Robin[/name], [name]Seneca[/name], [name]Socrates[/name], [name]Tiberius[/name], [name]Vasiliy[/name], Vieri. Good luck! =]

Please consider [name]Ambrose[/name] as a first name! It’s so handsome.

If it’s helpful, here are my top 20, in order:

[name]Evander[/name]
[name]Rainier[/name]
[name]Ambrose[/name]/[name]Emrys[/name]
[name]Altair[/name]
[name]Idris[/name]
[name]Herne[/name]
Remiel
[name]Aurelian[/name]
[name]Casimir[/name]

[name]Anselm[/name]
[name]Hadrian[/name]
[name]Byron[/name]
[name]Roland[/name]
[name]Tiberius[/name]
[name]Constantine[/name]
[name]Horatio[/name]
[name]Theron[/name]
[name]Bertram[/name]
[name]Hector[/name]

Wow, what a list!! I really like your naming style a lot!

Firstly, I’ll mention the ones I’d cut from the list:
[name]Xavi[/name] (feels like ‘er’ was cut from [name]Xavier[/name] just to stand out, feels a little pretentious)
Villads (I don’t know why, but it feels like a dirty word or something)
[name]Thoreau[/name] (feels both too last namey and too ‘heavy’-- and sounds too much like ‘throw’)
[name]Tristram[/name] (I’m not a fan of the double ‘tr’ sound)
[name]Seneca[/name] (I’d love this name, but I’d feel weird giving the name of a Native American nation to a kid, to me it feels like naming someone Germany or [name]Canada[/name] or [name]America[/name] or something)
[name]Senna[/name] (sounds very feminine, would be a greal girl’s name)
[name]Serafim[/name] (sounds very feminine also, especially with the rising popularity of [name]Seraphina[/name], and the natural NN [name]Sera[/name])
[name]Socrates[/name] (too historically heavy to work I think, like naming a kid Confucius, and feels pretentious for a given name)
Pelleas (almost reads as pelvis)
[name]Octavian[/name] (unless it’s your eighth kid, octa is too recognizable as the eight prefix (octagon))
[name]Jason[/name] (it’s not a bad name, I just think compared to the awesomeness of many of your other names, this one is boring)
[name]Junot[/name] ([name]Juno[/name] seems like it’s become a well-recognized girl’s name, and this has the feeling of just being a spelling variation of that)
[name]Isidore[/name] (feels like a variation of [name]Isidora[/name], like how [name]Isabelle[/name] is to [name]Isabella[/name])
[name]Hermes[/name] (sounds like herpes)
[name]Herne[/name] (NN: Horny)
Faramond (sounds like pheromone)
Eusebios (sounds like a computer language term or something)
[name]Cicero[/name] (over the top ‘bookish’ and feels pretentious as a given name in modern times)
[name]Alexis[/name] (as a top 30 name for girls, that’d keep it off the list for me as a boy’s name)
[name]Aloysius[/name] (I like how nameberry calls it a perfect name for a parrot, it just doesn’t hit the ‘human-name spot’ for me the more I reflect on it)

The ones I really like are (= the ones I especially like):
[name]Virgil[/name]

[name]Ulric[/name]

[name]Ambrose[/name] (but I really really like the Welsh variation of [name]Emrys[/name]*)
[name]Aurelian[/name]

The ones I didn’t mention are all in the decent, but not wonderful category.

Whoa, a lot to reply to! Thank you so much everyone!

mill1020: We don’t know the gender, no, leaving it as a nice surprise!

Sessh: Thank you for your sweet sweet comments! I’m going to check out that name blog, and also the Codex Alera books! [name]Serafim[/name] might indeed be too feminine. But it’s soooo pretty!!! I love your [name]Felix[/name] imagery, cats are my favourite things. And man, I love The Invention of [name]Hugo[/name] Cabret… such a lovely book…

[name]Emma[/name]: Clean yes or no, great! I’m not a huge fan of [name]Xavier[/name], but I think [name]Xavi[/name] is so adorable and cute (might have something to do with the gorgeous Spanish football player though…). You had me laughing out loud a few times there, especially at [name]Roderick[/name] & [name]Nestor[/name]. Can’t use those now, thank you very much! Nostrils… I hate that word. [name]Lucien[/name] is very beautiful, I just prefer [name]Lucius[/name], it’s such a good name. [name]Luciano[/name] is nice as well.

Bladey: I forgot to put [name]Clemency[/name] on my girl list! Thanks for reminding me. Family names on are list were all on your no list ([name]Alexis[/name], [name]Aloysius[/name], [name]Ilan[/name], [name]Ivan[/name], [name]Dominic[/name] & [name]Marcus[/name]). [name]Inigo[/name] is amazing, I love The [name]Princess[/name] [name]Bride[/name]! And [name]Damian[/name]/[name]Damien[/name] is bad ass. [name]Robin[/name] is more a boy’s name in [name]England[/name], 148 boys and 30 girls last year. Maybe [name]Silvan[/name] is better than [name]Silvanus[/name]? [name]Silvan[/name] is a beautiful name. What’s the thing with [name]Roscoe[/name] and [name]Alabama[/name]? You’re pretty funny, we had a good time reading your comments, and as always they were very helpful! [name]Junot[/name] is obviously for [name]Junot[/name] [name]Diaz[/name], whom I [name]LOVE[/name] (with capital letters). I think it’s adorable.

capturedcastle: I have nephews named [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name]! And my friend’s baby is [name]Calvin[/name]. Great suggestions though, I love them all.

[name]Lori[/name]: as you may have noticed, I was pretty inspired by your amazing baby names. I went back to your thread and had a look through!
If you’ve got awesome suggestions I’m all ears…

[name]Amy[/name]: [name]Hector[/name]… always loved the name and the mythology, but after [name]Troy[/name] with beautiful mr. Bana that name jumped up a hundred levels. You don’t think a blonde kid could pull of [name]Hadrian[/name]? We both have blonde dominance in our families, but there’s some strong [name]Asian[/name] genes in my family that came out in me and might go to baby as well. I do love the name [name]Gabriel[/name]! I never even thought of it! [name]Dominic[/name] is the name of boyfriend’s grandfather, I’ve always liked it. You’ve inspired it too though, I see little [name]Dom[/name] all the time and I think it’s the cutest nickname. It would be a middle though, as it’s already in use in the family.

[name]Blade[/name] (again): Top 20, yay! Thank you, I love that [name]Idris[/name] is so far up. [name]Emrys[/name] is nice, but is it weird to use such a welsh-welsh name?

Javad: Thank you for three stars by [name]Lucius[/name]! And your comments, very helpful! I laughed when I read the parrot thing…

can90, katie8765, notcinnaom, roe212, crunchymama, sodallas3: Thank you for your help!

Kind of funny how many names you have on your list that are towns in my area: [name]Cato[/name], [name]Lysander[/name], [name]Cicero[/name] to name a few! [name]Even[/name] though you are in UK, I can’t get into those because they are all “places” to me.

I like the following based on what I think are the most your style, but still totally “normal” but uncommon:
[name]Altair[/name]
[name]Bertram[/name]
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Quintin[/name]
[name]Rainer[/name]
[name]Roderick[/name]
[name]Rupert[/name]
[name]Xavi[/name] seems incomplete – what about [name]Xavier[/name]? This is supposedly 70-something in the US, but my husband’s coworker who is in his late 30’s and my 1 year old nephew are the only 2 people I’ve ever met with this name.

I"m kind of surprised to see some names like [name]Jason[/name] and [name]Marcus[/name] on your list. I think those would be way to common for your tastes.

@ottilie-- happy to have helped. Sorry for striking all the family names off! I believe they really ground and humanize a name. So [name]Alexis[/name], [name]Aloysius[/name], [name]Ilan[/name], [name]Ivan[/name], [name]Dominic[/name] & [name]Marcus[/name]-- any possible tweaks you’d consider, i.e. [name]Ragnar[/name] --> [name]Rainier[/name]?

Re [name]Emrys[/name]-- honestly I think it’s very much an old man name in [name]Wales[/name], but whereas [name]Ambrose[/name] skews monkish, [name]Emrys[/name] skews magical (both still being viable real-world names).

There are a lot of lovely, usuable names on your new list. I’ve bolded my faves.

[name]Aloysius[/name], [name]Altair[/name], [name]Anselm[/name], [name]Ambrose[/name], [name]Aurelian[/name]
[name]Byron[/name]
[name]Casimir[/name], [name]Cecil[/name], [name]Clemens[/name], [name]Constantine[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Damon[/name], [name]Dante[/name], [name]Didier[/name], [name]Dominic[/name]
[name]Ephraim[/name], [name]Etienne[/name], [name]Evander[/name]
Faramond, [name]Felix[/name]
[name]Gaius[/name]
[name]Hadrian[/name], [name]Heath[/name], [name]Hector[/name], [name]Herne[/name], [name]Horatio[/name], [name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Idris[/name], [name]Ignatius[/name], [name]Ilan[/name], [name]Isidore[/name], [name]Ivan[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Leopold[/name], [name]Lucius[/name], [name]Lysander[/name]
[name]Marcus[/name]
[name]Octavian[/name], [name]Orion[/name], [name]Orlando[/name], [name]Ovid[/name]
[name]Percival[/name], [name]Phineas[/name]
[name]Quintin[/name]
[name]Rainier[/name], Remiel, [name]Roland[/name], [name]Roscoe[/name], [name]Rufus[/name], [name]Rupert[/name]
[name]Seneca[/name], [name]Serafim[/name], [name]Silvanus[/name]
[name]Tarquin[/name], [name]Theron[/name], [name]Thoreau[/name], [name]Tiberius[/name], [name]Tristram[/name]
[name]Ulysses[/name]
[name]Virgil[/name]

[name]Blade[/name]:
[name]Alexis[/name] - [name]Alexander[/name] (but v. pop in bf’s family), [name]Alexei[/name], [name]Alexandria[/name] (and give it to the girls), [name]Alastar[/name], [name]Alessandro[/name], Santeri
[name]Aloysius[/name] - [name]Louis[/name]
[name]Ilan[/name] - anything tree related
[name]Ivan[/name] - [name]Ivo[/name]

2gsdchildren: Haha, yeah, I know there are lots of name cities in [name]America[/name], I find it incredibly funny whenever I’m there. I do love [name]Cato[/name] though…

[name]Mischa[/name]: Thank you, I love that [name]Hadrian[/name] is in bold!!
