New name!

Hi! One of my best friends just came out as non-binary, and is searching for a new name (I’ve been recruited as “online inquirer”)! The only two requirements are that the name be gender neutral or masculine leaning, and be directly related to or honoring of their birth name, Molly (middle name Jolie). Any ideas?

Thanks!

These are great! They’ve gotten a BUNCH of Oliver/Olly suggestions, but that’s their brother’s name

[name_u]Marley[/name_u]
[name_u]Jem[/name_u] (taking M from their first, J-e from their middle)
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u]
[name_m]Marlon[/name_m]
[name_u]Merari[/name_u] (similar meaning and sound to their first)

I think something along the lines of Marley/Marlon/Marlowe/Mallory would work well!

Another idea would be to honour the meaning. [name_f]Molly[/name_f], coming from [name_f]Mary[/name_f], has several meanings, including “bitter,” “drop of the sea,” and “beloved.” Here are some suggestions based on those:

[name_f]Beloved[/name_f]:
[name_m]Jeb[/name_m]
[name_u]Lemmitty[/name_u]
[name_m]Davey[/name_m]
[name_m]Amias[/name_m]
[name_m]Lennan[/name_m] / [name_u]Lennon[/name_u]
[name_u]Mirren[/name_u]
[name_m]Carwyn[/name_m]

[name_u]Sea[/name_u]:
[name_u]Mirren[/name_u]
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u]
[name_u]Kai[/name_u]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_u]Kallan[/name_u]

Good luck to your friend!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! We live together, so they’ve been looking through all your replies and really appreciate them . So far, their favs are [name_u]Jo[/name_u], MJ, [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], [name_u]Marley[/name_u], [name_u]Malone[/name_u], [name_u]Jem[/name_u], [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], and [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] (this one’s really cute, their childhood nickname was [name_u]Lemon[/name_u])

What about [name_u]Marley[/name_u]? I have always been liking this name for any gender

Other ideas:

[name_u]Marinell[/name_u] (Shakespearian; actually was originally masculine, but I think it sounds very neutral.)
Joël
[name_u]Lee[/name_u]
[name_u]Ollie[/name_u]
[name_m]Marlon[/name_m]
[name_u]Lior[/name_u] / [name_m]Lio[/name_m]
[name_u]Merritt[/name_u]
[name_u]Jay[/name_u]
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u]
[name_f]Jolie[/name_f]
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u]
[name_u]Loris[/name_u] (It is an Italian masculine name; but I always thought it can be very gender neutral.)
Moggi (Pronounced: Mo-gee. It was the last name of someone I knew and he went exclusively by that because his name was very common.)
[name_u]Rio[/name_u]
[name_m]Maël[/name_m]
Amatis
[name_u]Malone[/name_u]
[name_m]Amedée[/name_m] (From meaning)
[name_u]Maxi[/name_u] / [name_u]Max[/name_u]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_m]Mahé[/name_m] / [name_m]Maé[/name_m]

Hollis, Marlowe, Shiloh are some of my current gender neutral favorites and are somewhat similar to Holly. Names ending in -ley might be something else to consider, like Bailey or Adley.

ETA: Ellis, Fallon, Oakley, Milo

What about [name_u]Noel[/name_u] (pronounced “Nohll?”) Has a similar sound to [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and is pretty equally split in usage between boys and girls, making it a perfect nonbinary name!

Other ideas include Olly/Ollie, Mojo, Jo/Joey, or just [name_u]Mo[/name_u]!
