I keep revisiting [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]. It’s not an absolute favourite of mine, more one I’ve had a soft spot for for several years now, on and off. The more I work on my boys’ list, though, the more I’m falling for it. I see it as being classic but not overused with a few different nickname options.
Three questions:
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the name? ([name_f]Imagine[/name_f] it with a one-syllable surname)
What’s your favourite nickname option?
What names would you pair with it, either as a middle or as a sibling?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the name? ([name_f]Imagine[/name_f] it with a one-syllable surname) It’s my favorite boys’ name! Unfortunately, DH vetoed it because we already have a nephew named [name_m]Colin[/name_m].
What’s your favourite nickname option? [name_u]Nick[/name_u] and [name_u]Nico[/name_u] are my favorites, and I like [name_m]Colin[/name_m] as well, but that would definitely be out of the question even if DH did agree to [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m].
What names would you pair with it, either as a middle or as a sibling?
1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the name? ([name_f]Imagine[/name_f] it with a one-syllable surname) I do like the name, and I think a one-syllable surname would work well.
2. What’s your favourite nickname option? [name_u]Nick[/name_u] is always good. I like [name_m]Cole[/name_m], as well.
3. What names would you pair with it, either as a middle or as a sibling? For siblings, I would probably go with classics like [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] or [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]. For middles, I would go with a two syllable middle (if you have a one-syllable surname).
Objectively, yes; subjectively, no. [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] is a solid classic, although not nearly as timeless as names like [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_u]James[/name_u]. Most of the Nicholases and Nicks I know are in their late teens and early twenties. Because of that, [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] is dated to me. It’s a great name, just dated, and it does get that bad rap as a troublemaker name. (All the Nicks I’ve known were pains in the butt, although I’m sure there are many lovely Nicks and Nicholases out there.)
What’s your favourite nickname option?
[name_u]Nico[/name_u] or [name_m]Cole[/name_m]. Anything but [name_u]Nick[/name_u].
What names would you pair with it, either as a middle or as a sibling?
For a middle I would do something like [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] [name_u]Rory[/name_u], or [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. Something short and more contemporary that packs a punch. For a sibling I would pair it with something longer and familiar like [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], or [name_m]Dominic[/name_m].
[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see it’s going down well on the whole, and that I should stick with a fairly classic sibset - I’ll work on the middle but you ladies have given me food for thought. I’ve never come across a [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] nn [name_m]Cole[/name_m], and while [name_m]Cole[/name_m]'s not my usual cup of tea it kind of works, though I’m not so sure it sits right with a surname that also begins with a hard C.
I like [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] but its a little plain for my tastes. I find [name_u]Nick[/name_u] dated, but [name_u]Nico[/name_u]'s pretty cool and I’ve always had a soft spot for [name_m]Cole[/name_m]. I’d pair it with a more unusual middle to spice it up a little, but I’d keep the classic/traditional theme for siblings. From the list in your signature, I love [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]George[/name_m] with [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] x
