Nickname Dilemma

Awhile back I made a topic about the name [name]Alasdair[/name] and possible nicknames. My DH and I really think it might the name we choose for a possible son in the future, along with the names [name]Theron[/name] and [name]Thierry[/name] (nn [name]Theo[/name]). After some probably I’m warming up to the idea of [name]Aly[/name] as a nickname, even though my closest aunt’s nickname is [name]Alli[/name]. I really like it, and it is a long established nickname for [name]Alasdair[/name] in [name]Scotland[/name]. And I feel with such a big name like [name]Alasdair[/name] it needs a nickname, and our family and friends have a habit for nicknaming everything.

Other nicknames we’ve considered:

[name]Alec[/name]-but it feels forced
[name]Al[/name]-Okay, but a little bland
Dare/[name]Dair[/name]-Its a cool nickname, but its not for us
[name]Dari[/name]/[name]Dara[/name]-this is the one we also really like, and would most probably use in conjuction with [name]Aly[/name]

So thoughts? Would [name]Aly[/name] be too confusing? Or I am I just overthinking things… Odds are in the future if we have a son we may not choose to call him [name]Alasdair[/name] but something else but it dosen’t hurt to ask.

My godmother’s son is called [name]Alasdair[/name] and he is [name]Aly[/name].

I like it and don’t think it’s confusing at all.

I agree with [name]Aly[/name], use it! I think that’s what I would naturally call him if he were my son, despite my name being “[name]Allie[/name]”.

I think [name]Aly[/name] is fine. BTW I think [name]Dari[/name] sounds too much like Dairy.

[name]Aly[/name] is good. And if you think it sounds too girly to pronounce it like “alley,” you can put the stress on the 2nd syllable, like [name]Ali[/name].

I don’t love [name]Dara[/name] (I know a couple girls with the name) or [name]Dari[/name] (assuming the pronunciation is like dairy). But he’ll be your son, and you can call him whatever name/nickname you want - even if your family hates it.
