My name is [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it! I’ve always been very happy with my name and have never gone by a nickname. (I HATE [name_m]Al[/name_m] and [name_f]Ally[/name_f]/[name_u]Allie[/name_u])
I just started university, and I’ve already met seven other girls with the same name as me! One of them is my roommate, and the others are all in my same program and classes. It’s starting to get confusing.
I don’t want to go by an initial ([name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] D., [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] L…) so I’ve been entertaining the idea of a nickname. But I’m not sure what it would be. My youngest sister calls me [name_f]Lyssa[/name_f], which I like, but that’s always been special to her and it would feel weird to have other people call me that. I can’t go by my middle name because it is ethnic and people would pronounce it wrong.
Yssa/[name_u]Issa[/name_u] (Iss-a), Lyss, or [name_u]Isa[/name_u] (Iz-a) maybe? I’d say [name_f]Izzie[/name_f]/[name_u]Izzy[/name_u] or [name_f]Liz[/name_f] but they’re pretty common too. I can see [name_f]Sally[/name_f] working, but that might be a bit too far off. Is it possible to nn your middle to something easier to manage? I hope I’ve given you some ideas!
Lyss or [name_f]Lyssie[/name_f] would be my automatic go to (I also dislike [name_m]Al[/name_m] and [name_u]Allie[/name_u]). You might also like Alsy/[name_f]Alsie[/name_f]? Like [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] but with an A, it’s distinctive but also far enough away from [name_u]Allie[/name_u] - at least for me.
You could also find other ways round it, during my undergraduate there were 9 Emmas in my class - and 7 of them were [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]! We did just use surnames a lot, and it really wasn’t the end of the world. In my accommodation there were also 2 extra Emmas who we ended up calling Zemma and Demma (Zoology [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and Dentistry [name_f]Emma[/name_f], but shortened). Zemma still uses it as a nickname 6 years later!
Perhaps you could use the first letter of your MN or LN to come up with a NN? For example if ymiddle name is [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] [name_u]Delaney[/name_u], you could go by “[name_f]Adie[/name_f]” (AY-dee) or “[name_f]Addie[/name_f]." If your last name were [name_m]Montague[/name_m], you could go by “[name_f]Alma[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Amy[/name_f]”.
My first thought was [name_f]Lyssa[/name_f] but you could also use Lissy/Lyssi or [name_u]Isa[/name_u]/[name_u]Issa[/name_u] or Isy/[name_u]Issy[/name_u].
I like the suggestion of [name_u]Issa[/name_u]/[name_u]Isa[/name_u]. I also think it’s helpful to choose a nickname that doesn’t have the same ending sound, as that’s really all you’ll pick up. Maybe [name_f]Aya[/name_f], [name_f]Ala/name_f, and then of course [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] and Lissy (boring).
