We are planning to name our little girl [name_f]Lila[/name_f] (Lye-luh), and my husband really wants to call her [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] as a nickname, but I’m not sure if that would be odd or if people would think it was strange. We also like [name_f]Layla[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] if that’d be less odd. Older sister is [name_f]Grace[/name_f] nn [name_f]Gracey[/name_f] if that helps. Grace’s middle name is [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], we’re still picking for baby #2[name_f][/name_f].
I don’t see how it would be odd, a lot of nicknames are based off of spelling and not sound like [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
Nicknames are usually shorter than the original, and Lily isn’t shorter, it’s just a different name.
Perhaps he just likes the name Lily better, but I think him calling her Lily will be confusing to her trying to learn her name.
I feel like the name is short and simple enough that you wouldn’t need something more simple to say because it already rolls off of the tongue nicely and isn’t a mouthful to use every time.
I mostly see parents use “pet names” for their kids when they don’t need to actually shorten the name, like monkey, or sweet cheeks, bubba, etc, because it just forms and comes naturally as a form of affection.
I personally don’t see why this name needs to be any shorter, it’s stunning, one of my favorites (Lylah)
Unless it is something like Lye or Lala which is still the same length and gives off petname vibes.
If it is only your partner wanting to call them Lily, I’d have a discussion about whether or not he is in love with the name you are putting on the birth certificate
If you are going to just call her Lilly people will assume it’s her real name and it sounds like you both really like it and want to use it.
I feel like there has to be a conversation of maybe talking about just using the name Lilly?
Layla and Lilah are two completely different names and sounds from Lilly, so maybe you guys just like Lilly better? Is there a reason you are not using it despite loving it and being set on calling her this name regardless?
I’m purely curious!
I have seen posts on here in the past where [name_f]Lily[/name_f] was used as a nickname for [name_f]Lila[/name_f] or [name_f]Lilah[/name_f], so I definitely don’t think it’s too far of a stretch and could 100% work
[name_f][/name_f]I think [name_f]Layla[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] could also work, but for me it’s more of a stretch than [name_f]Lila[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. Maybe because it starts with [name_m]Lay[/name_m] vs [name_f]Lil[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]Either way [name_f]Grace[/name_f] & [name_f]Lila[/name_f] / [name_f]Gracey[/name_f] & [name_f]Lily[/name_f] or [name_f]Grace[/name_f] & [name_f]Layla[/name_f] / [name_f]Gracey[/name_f] & [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] are all super sweet together!
I think [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] ‘Lily’ makes more sense
I think [name_m]Ly[/name_m] “lye” or [name_m]Ly[/name_m] [name_m]Ly[/name_m] “lye-lye” would also be sweet. It could alternatively be spelled as [name_m]Li[/name_m] (or [name_m]Li[/name_m] Li). I also like [name_f]Layla[/name_f], but I suggested [name_m]Ly[/name_m] because nicknames are typically shorter. [name_m]Ly[/name_m] has a better sound than spelling, but I think this is totally okay because nicknames tend to be spoken and not written. :D.
He doesn’t prefer [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]. We both adore [name_f]Lila[/name_f], and think [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] could be a nickname option.
That spelling is pretty!
[name_f]My[/name_f] little girl is [name_f]Lyla[/name_f], I sometimes call her Ly-Ly but she is mostly [name_f]Lyla[/name_f]. She has a few pet names though, like [name_f]Lima[/name_f] [name_m]Bean[/name_m] and [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] Bug. But I don’t know of any other nicknames! I can see how [name_f]Lila[/name_f] “Lilly” could be confusing but it could also work. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter’s Grandad does sometimes call her [name_f]Lily[/name_f], but it hasn’t really stuck as no one else uses it!
So funny! [name_f]My[/name_f] youngest sister is [name_f]Lila[/name_f] and our dad really wanted [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] but we promised we could call her [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] (never did). Her mom calls her [name_f]Lolo[/name_f] sometimes.
[name_f][/name_f]That said, any name can have any nick name.
I can sort of see it but I don’t really see the point of it. [name_f]Lila[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] are separate names. However, no doubt you will find a pet name for her, but I feel if you are going to call her [name_f]Lily[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Lila[/name_f], you might as well name her that.
