Nickname issues :(

DH and I feel we have found the perfect combination of classic and trendy by giving our son a traditional, family name combined with a name we both love, and a smoosh of the two became the trendy nn, [name]Jax[/name]. It seems fairly unique here, neighbours and friends have never heard it before. But, it sounds pretty much the same as [name]Jack[/name]. We started a mommy + baby class this morning and there are 2 Jacks in the class.

Does this mean our son will not be able to use his nn at school? [name]Will[/name] he either have to go by [name]John[/name], or [name]Jax[/name] T. ?

We haven’t been using the usual [name]John[/name] nns because my brother has the corner on those.

What do you think? Should we continue using [name]Jax[/name] 'cause we love it? Should we come up with a new nn?

Yes. I definitely think you should keep using it. I don’t see why you should stop using a nn you love just because others have used it to. They don’t own it and it’s a great nn.

Keep using the nn [name]Jax[/name]! Other people will have the same nn, but that shouldn’t dictate what you thoughtfully and lovingly call your son.

Definitely keep using it! I actually think [name]Jax[/name] sounds plenty different from [name]Jack[/name] anyway.

Keep using it! In school plenty of kids go by completely random names anyway. I remember one kid who’s name was something like [name]Joe[/name]. He went by [name]Malachi[/name] I think. Not his middle name just random.

And I thinks its beyond adorable! I will have a little cousin with that soon, so I am a bit biased though.

[name]Jax[/name] is definitely different enough from [name]Jack[/name] that it shouldn’t be too much of an issues. At least in school when he hands in work or labels cubbies he won’t be [name]Jack[/name] B because the x is very distinctive. While incredibly similar the ck and x endings to have different sounds so for a teacher with both they’ll put in the effort to make sure the pronounce each correctly to avoid confusion. I think [name]Jax[/name] is perfect and I wouldn’t change it because others chose [name]Jack[/name] that’s just unnecessary.

In school [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Jax[/name] will be able to be distiguished, on paper at least and I’m sure it will be heard as well. He’ll probably get called [name]John[/name] on the register, but as [name]Jack[/name] is a common enough nickname for [name]John[/name] as it is, I can’t see why he couldn’t go by [name]Jax[/name] in class. Only issue you might have is if there’s a [name]Jackson[/name]/[name]Jaxon[/name] who goes by the same nickname, but I very much doubt that.

Thank you all for the reassurance! I love the nn [name]Jax[/name] and he seems to already know that’s his name (but maybe I’m just an enthusiastic first time mommy?). I’d hate to make him get used to a new name at this point but since we use it as a nn, not his given name, he does have other options. For baby number 2 though (if & when), I think I’ll look for something less common!

I think it honestly depends on how much it’ll bother you to have others by his name or a similar name in his classes/sports teams. We initially called our 2nd daughter [name]Katie[/name]. Somehow I was oblivious to all the Katies/Kates/Kaylas/et al out there. It bugged me so we switched started calling her [name]Katharine[/name] when she was about 2 and since then the pet name [name]Kat[/name] has emerged and we call her that some too. Of course there is still a chance that at some point there will be another C/[name]Katherine[/name] who uses her full name, but I think it’s less likely.
