Nickname question

[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious if anyone has any ideas for a nickname for [name_m]Miles[/name_m]. My husband and I are very set on the names for our twins, so they will not change. The only problem that we are having is that both DH and I have one syllable nicknames that we go by most of the time. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] will also have this, since we will call him [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]. Maybe I’m being ridiculous, but I don’t want [name_m]Miles[/name_m] to feel left out. We can’t come up with a nickname for [name_m]Miles[/name_m] that we like, though. I mean besides My, what options do we even have? Is this just ridiculous and he doesn’t need a nickname since his name is only two syllables? Opinions please! [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

[name_m]Miles[/name_m] strikes me as a nickname-proof name, but if you’re keen on nicknames, I’m sure one will emerge as he grows.

Have you decided on a middle name, yet?
My first thought would be that if it’s something like [name_m]Miles[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], you could go with MJ. I’d see what the middle initial is and go from there.

I’m always a fan of nicknames even when a name doesn’t really NEED one. They are just fun. And if everyone else has one then I can see why you would want one for [name_m]Miles[/name_m] too. It is a pretty tough name to find nicknames for though. I think M ([name_f]Em[/name_f]) could work. I know a little boy named [name_u]Emmet[/name_u] that gets called [name_f]Em[/name_f] a lot. I think using the first letter is a good way to get a nickname out of a seemingly nickname proof name. Or maybe [name_m]Milo[/name_m]. I know that’s a name in itself but I thought of it because I have a friend named [name_m]Steve[/name_m] (which is a pretty nickname proof name) and he gets called [name_m]Steve[/name_m]-O. [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] are cute together. Both four letters and a little spunky!

Thanks for your suggestions! Maybe it was ridiculous to think that we need to have a nickname, I’m sure one will emerge as we get to know him.

@laugre - His initials will be MHGW, so that doesn’t really help with any nicknames. Good suggestion though!

I don’t think he needs a nickname - [name_m]Miles[/name_m] is perfect! The nicknames I can think of are not nearly as nice as [name_m]Miles[/name_m].

My favorite nickname for [name_m]Miles[/name_m] has always been [name_m]Milo[/name_m].

The syllables thing is a non-issue, but I see why you’d want him to have a nickname just like the rest of the family. [name_m]Milo[/name_m] or [name_f]Miley[/name_f]? [name_m]Even[/name_m] Milesy

You could call him M or [name_m]Milo[/name_m] or [name_f]Miley[/name_f] or he could go by initials as a pp suggested.

Hmm… I always thought [name_m]Miles[/name_m] was supposed to be one syllable. Guess I must really have got the pronunciation wrong!

It’s 1 and a half syllables, kinda like [name_u]James[/name_u].

I’m on team ‘doesn’t need a nickname’. Our kiddo is [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and we are heavy nicknamers. So, he ended up being Booger, Booger [name_u]Boo[/name_u], Boog Boog, Boogie, [name_u]Boo[/name_u], and now that he’s bigger he’s ‘Kiddo’ about 75% of the time. With everyone else he’s just [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. If you really love to nickname, it’ll come naturally and doesn’t need to be related to the actual name.

I have a [name_m]Miles[/name_m] who is 1.5 and like you I’ve always been keen on nns. Our older son has a long formal name and only goes by his nn which I love. I was holding out naming him [name_m]Miles[/name_m] just because he wouldn’t have an easy, built in nn. I love [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and thought I’d use that but it’s not quicker to say so I don’t. I did try it out but I felt like I was forcing it instead of it being natural. He still does not have a nn and it’s fine. [name_m]Miles[/name_m] is quick and and easy to say and half the time I call the kids and dog the wrong name anyway so adding a nn to the mix just hasn’t happened. He gets, cutie, baby, wee one on a regular basis which I’m sure will all just change to kiddo etc as he gets older.

I love both the names you names chose.

I agree with a pp poster that nns happen on their own and they are not necessarily associated with the actual name. For example, maybe your [name_m]Miles[/name_m] will love trucks and you will call him Trucker or he will eat really quickly and you will call him [name_m]Wolf[/name_m]. I understand wanting the name “set” to be complete and fair in that sense, but don’t force it. It will come.

[name_m]Miles[/name_m] is one syllable

I really like [name_m]Miles[/name_m] without a nickname. You could always use M, [name_m]Milo[/name_m], or [name_m]Harry[/name_m] from the middle name [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but I really don’t think one is needed.

Thank you to all! We will wait until we get to know him better, since a nickname will undoubtedly emerge.

In the area where we live, the word “mile” is clearly pronounced with two syllables, so my husband and I decided that we would stick with that pronunciation. We know a little boy around 5 named [name_m]Miles[/name_m], and even though his parents started out pronouncing it with one syllable, everyone else read it wrong. He now goes by [name_m]Miles[/name_m] with 2 syllables. Our son can always change the way that his name is pronounced later if it doesn’t fit him.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the idea of [name_m]Milo[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Miles[/name_m]!
