Nickname Teddy- Thoughts

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there!

We are expecting our first baby in [name_f]May[/name_f]. We don’t know the sex, but if it is a boy, we think we would like to call him [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. However, we are unsure what to use as the full name!

Our last name begins with a D, so we’ve talked about using a name with the initials T.E.D., which naturally lends itself to the nickname [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Evans[/name_m] D- is one strong contender.

BUT, I would really like to use my maiden name as the middle name, which starts with an H. The initials would not match up to spell T.E.D., obviously, but I prefer this option based on the sound of the three names together.

[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] does not sound right with our last name, and I’m not crazy about [name_m]Edward[/name_m], though it is a good name. We’re leaning towards [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] as the first name.

My question is this- do you think [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] could be a nickname for [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]? I know it’s a little unorthodox.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks!

Yes, I do. I know a [name_m]Robert[/name_m] who goes by [name_u]Ricky[/name_u], and people assume his name is [name_m]Richard[/name_m] but it’s not hugely problematic. I also know a [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] whose real name is [name_m]Colin[/name_m].

[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] are both really wonderful names.

I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] pretty well for [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]…just curious, have you thought about [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] or [name_m]Edison[/name_m] or [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]?

I like it! You can get nicknames from anywhere really(littler kids are good at this!). For example, my friend is the youngest of 6(bit much [name_f]IMO[/name_f], but who am I to judge?). Oldest was [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] nn [name_m]Eddie[/name_m], then [name_f]Catharine[/name_f] nn CJ(middle initial J), then [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], then [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] nn [name_m]Benji[/name_m], then [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lena[/name_f], then my friend [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I call her [name_f]Libby[/name_f], and so do her siblings/family, but everyone else started calling her Six! Understandable(ish) but seriously! Anyway, again I quite like it!

[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] totally works as a nickname for [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. Both are really handsome, by the way.

Teddy is a cute name that reminds me of Teddy Bears. I do like the idea of the initials, but I think you should just name him Teddy! It’s fine as a full name. Theodore does not sound right w/ your last name, but what about Theo? Anything is possible as a pet name, but if I met a Teddy I would not assume it was short for Thomas.

Other possible names:
Edwin
Edmund
Timothy (?)

I don’t know. Really besides Theo/Theodore there aren’t many Teddy names that would make sense as nn. :stuck_out_tongue: I’d say use whatever you want as a nickname if Theodore doesn’t work for you.

Good luck.

I think [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] would work for the nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]

People might assume his name is [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], but that’s not too big of a deal imo

[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] sound cute and adorable.

Perhaps these names - [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] [name_m]Remus[/name_m] Lupin (from harry potter)

Yes definitely! And I love the nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] by the way. It is great

I think [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]” definitely works. I also like the suggestion of [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]”.

We were just trying to decide if we could get away with just [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], or if we would go with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].

I think [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] would be an adorable nickname for [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]! Both [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] are on my list.
My [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] would probably mostly go by [name_u]Theo[/name_u], but I’d end up calling him [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] as well. It’s too cute to resist.

Thanks to y’all for the vote of confidence! I really appreciate the feedback.

Yes - unexpected, and very handsome.

I love [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]/[name_m]Ted[/name_m]! And definitely think it can work for [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], especially when his last name starts with a D, therefore his first and last initials would be T.D. Which sound very close to [name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
