Nickname vs. Legal name

I’m almost 39 weeks pregnant, and I’m second-guessing my name choices. Well, sort of. I’m second-guessing the format.

Previously, I didn’t want to have a child with a long name that felt the need to be shortened. I didn’t want her correcting everyone the rest of her life, saying “But, I go by…”. But I’ve started to love a longer version of one of my choices, and now I’m not sure what I want to do.

My top two names are [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Thora[/name]. But lately I can’t stop coming back to [name]Theodora[/name] as the primary name, shortened to [name]Thora[/name]. I think it’s beautiful enough that it shouldn’t be a problem if teachers or employers call her [name]Theodora[/name], but friends call her [name]Thora[/name]. But I’m not sure. Is it too much of a hassle?

By the way, we’re deciding on our final name choice once she is born. So [name]Edith[/name] will still be in the running, but I don’t want to be questioning the [name]Theodora[/name] vs. [name]Thora[/name] thing after she’s born.

[name]Thora[/name] is so much better than [name]Theodora[/name]. Normally I’m all for options, but not so much, in this case.

I definitely think [name]Thora[/name] should stand alone! [name]Theodora[/name] just doesn’t have the same charm, [name]IMO[/name]. And very few people would ask if [name]Thora[/name] was short for something, I would think. It is a name in its’ own right, after all!

[name]Both[/name] [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Thora[/name] are lovely  you can’t go wrong with either one! Good luck!

I’m surprised [name]Theodora[/name] isn’t getting a bit more love

I’m a fan of both - [name]Theodora[/name] nn [name]Thora[/name] would be absolutely darling! If it makes a difference, [name]Thora[/name] means Thunder while [name]Theodora[/name] means gift of god. Maybe one of the meanings appeals more to you than the other?

If you know her [name]Theodora[/name], the nicknames [name]Thea[/name] and [name]Teddi[/name] are possibilities that other people might choose to call her (or she might choose at some point). So [name]Theodora[/name] gives your daughter more options but if you want her called [name]Thora[/name], I would name her that.

I have several friends with longer names ([name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Madeline[/name], [name]Alexander[/name], etc.) who are usually asked ‘[name]Do[/name] you go by a nickname?’ On roll call at school, most kids who go by a nickname will say, “I go by…” Most will also introduce themselves using their nickname.

I’m generally a fan of longer names in general, because they allow a child to go by what name they like best. I love [name]Theodora[/name] and [name]Thora[/name], so I would use [name]Thora[/name] as the nickname. But, if [name]Thora[/name] is a teen and dislikes her name, she can go by [name]Thea[/name] or [name]Teddi[/name].

However, if you can’t stand any other common nicknames for [name]Theodora[/name], go with [name]Thora[/name].

I think you should stick with [name]Thora[/name] on its own. I have a nickname name and have always loved it. I think its somewhat silly to name a child something with the intention of calling them something else, SO if you intend on calling her [name]Thora[/name] from the get go, name her [name]Thora[/name]. It’s a strong name on its own.

[name]Thora[/name] is perfectly legitimate as a name on its own. [name]Theodora[/name] is lovely but it does offer more nickname options and there is the possibility one day she may decide she prefers [name]Teddy[/name] or [name]Dora[/name] or something else. It’s up to you whether that would bother you in which case go with [name]Thora[/name], or if you like the other nicknames.

I would probably chose [name]Theodora[/name], and NN her [name]Thora[/name]; but [name]Thora[/name] is a fine stand alone name too.

Name her [name]Theodora[/name]! My full name is [name]Katherine[/name] although my parents always wanted to call me [name]Kate[/name]/[name]Katie[/name] and I really like having a full formal name because when I’m older I plan to go by it. Also, it’s really not that big of a deal to correct the teacher on the first day of school, in all my classes about 1/4 of the kids at least go by a nn and have to correct the teacher. Plus, if your daughter doesn’t like [name]Thora[/name] she can go by her full name or another nn like [name]Theo[/name] or [name]Dora[/name]

If you love [name]Theodora[/name] then use it and you have several nickname options that are so beautiful too! [name]Thora[/name], [name]Thea[/name], [name]Dora[/name]= all beautiful! [name]Theodora[/name] is a beautiful name that you NEVER hear. Good luck!

Personally, I prefer [name]Theodora[/name]. Plus, if for whatever reason she didn’t like [name]Thora[/name] when she was older, there are plenty of nickname options for [name]Theodora[/name]. I like the idea of having options so I woul go with that. Calling her [name]Thora[/name] in school, etc. won’t be a big deal.

I love [name]Theodora[/name]; I think it’s classic, elegant, and just a smidge quirky. I’m smitten. [name]Thora[/name] is a great name, but I am always in favor of more options.

[name]Theodora[/name] is beautiful, sweet, strong, and charming, as is [name]Thora[/name]. I say go with [name]Theodora[/name], and call her [name]Thora[/name] when you’d like. Have your cake and eat it, too! I always regretted not having more nickname options for myself.

[name]Theodora[/name] is beautiful!

I would defiantly name her [name]Theodora[/name] and call her [name]Thora[/name]. So many people go by nicknames, it wouldn’t be an issue, plus it gives her options if she doesn’t want to be [name]Thora[/name]. I am defiantly in the longer name with a nn camp.

I’d go with [name]Theodora[/name] for her first name and [name]Thora[/name] for her nn. I have a medium-length first name & always wanted a longer one. [name]Long[/name] names have more options & they sound sophisticated, while their nn can be cute & girly. It’s nice to have options, not just for her but for you, you may come to like the nn [name]Ora[/name], [name]Thea[/name] or [name]Dora[/name] later on. Congrats on your new little blessing.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Theodora[/name]! It’s one of my top picks. [name]Thora[/name] is a really cute nickname, too. For me, it’s too odd to stand alone, and I definitely prefer [name]Edith[/name] over [name]Thora[/name], but [name]Theodora[/name] wins over [name]Edith[/name].

[name]Love[/name] [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Theodora[/name]
not much of a fan of [name]Thora[/name] as a full name
