Nicknames such as Robby or Danny?
I’m not normally a fan of nicknames as stand-alone names, but it does depend on the name. Some have a long history of independent use (for example [name_f]Margot[/name_f] was originally a nickname for [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]). I can’t say I’m a fan of [name_u]Robby[/name_u] and [name_u]Danny[/name_u] as stand-alone names though. They just seem very nickname-y to me (possibly because of the -y ending) and juvenile, and I think you’d get a lot of people assuming their full names are [name_m]Robert[/name_m] and [name_m]Daniel[/name_m].
I think most of them are fine. I’ve known a lot of people with nickname names(like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f], [name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_u]Bobby[/name_u], [name_m]Dan[/name_m], [name_u]Billie[/name_u]/y, [name_u]Reggie[/name_u]) so I think [name_u]Danny[/name_u] and [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] work fine
I like some, but [name_u]Robby[/name_u] and [name_u]Danny[/name_u] I’m not a fan of. I mostly like ones more established as stand alone names like…
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_u]Kit[/name_u]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_m]Bram[/name_m]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
I like them more on girls than boys in general
Depends on the name. I’d never use a diminutive that ends in -ie or -y as a full name because it seems childish and won’t age well, but I’d be happy to use something like [name_f]Annika[/name_f] or [name_f]Nora[/name_f], both of which started out as nicknames but are substantial enough to stand on their own.
I actually love them. All my top girl names are nicknames. [name_u]Robby[/name_u] and [name_u]Danny[/name_u] in particular are very usable imo.
Unless they’ve started to really become their own name (eg. [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Jenna[/name_f], [name_m]Xander[/name_m]), I’m not really for it.
I see them as diminutives of something bigger.
I don’t really care for mine. And there’s always the inevitable “oh short for ____?”.
But I think it’s different in the case of your two examples because both can be further shortened into more of a “grown-up” alternative as a kid becomes an adult.
I don’t mind them! I know several adults with diminutives as full names (such as [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], [name_f]Jenny[/name_f], [name_f]Debbie[/name_f]) that wear them well. And I’d rather name my kid the name I would call them on a daily basis than a full name I would never use.
I love a lot of nicknames as stand-alone names: [name_f]Tess[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]/[name_f]Addie[/name_f], [name_f]Lore[/name_f], [name_u]Cass[/name_u], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], Cath, [name_m]Laith[/name_m], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Ree[/name_f], [name_u]Jace[/name_u], [name_u]Van[/name_u].
There are some though that feel too nickname-y for me: [name_f]Nell[/name_f]/[name_f]Nellie[/name_f], [name_f]Gigi[/name_f], [name_f]Cece[/name_f], [name_f]Liv[/name_f], [name_f]Liz[/name_f], [name_f]Cat[/name_f]/[name_f]Kat[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_m]Baz[/name_m], [name_u]Gus[/name_u], [name_f]Coco[/name_f], [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
Seems like there’s no rhyme or reason to the ones I like and the ones I feel aren’t substantial enough.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think [name_u]Gus[/name_u] could totally be used as a stand-alone name. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
