It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I just can’t get the name Edelweiss out of my head, and I really wanted to hear some other opinions on the name.
I’m especially interested in what nickname suggestions you all have?
And also
- What gender do you associate it with?
- Is it very wearable as a first name?
- What would you assume about a person with this name?

I think of it as a last name but I like last names as first names.
I’d say it’s gender neutral.
Nicknames for boys:
[name_u]Eddie[/name_u]
[name_u]Del[/name_u]
[name_m]Wes[/name_m]
Nicknames for girls:
[name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Della[/name_f]
I don’t make assumptions about people based off of their names, but I would associate it as a name of Germanic origin and maybe I would think the baby is a descendant of that culture.

I’d assume it’s a girl, to me it’s a very odd choice as a first name (but then I speak German) as it’a literally “noble white” and normally such explicit word names aren’t used here; I’d assume their parents were big fan of the sound of music and probably have the song as their child’s lullaby
Nicknames…
[name_f]Edie[/name_f] pronounced “aydee”
[name_f]Della[/name_f] / [name_u]Dell[/name_u] / [name_f]Elle[/name_f] / [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] / [name_f]Ella[/name_f]

I would immediately assume female. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Edie[/name_f] (or Eda) as a NN as previously suggested.
Other NN options:
[name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Aidy[/name_f], Aidel/Edel, [name_u]Del[/name_u], [name_f]Della[/name_f], Dess, [name_u]Dessie[/name_u], [name_f]Dessa[/name_f], [name_f]Essie[/name_f], [name_f]Vi[/name_f]
For a boy, perhaps Wise, [name_m]Wes[/name_m], [name_u]Ace[/name_u]
Such a goooorgeous name! I’m over the moon to see this post! I love Edelweiss, and I am just so excited by her nickname possibilities. What a fantastic, special name. Reminds me of the feel of Chrysanthemum as a name! Big and floral. I also love the Sound of Music connections that Edelweiss has… Ice always adored that film and that little song. Feels very quaint and loving.
I’d choose…
Edie (pronounced ‘EE-dee’ or ‘AY-dee’)
Della
Wiley
Essa
Ella
Edel (pronounced ‘AY-dell’ or ‘EE-dull’ or ‘uh-DELL’)
Sissy
Issy (pronounced ‘EYE-see’)
Weissy (pronounced ‘VYE-see’)
Del
Wendy (this was my first thought, for some reason? A bit of a big stretch, but I kinda love it!)
I’d definitely assume and associate female, and I’d love it on a girl (as a middle or a first). Though, could be really
sweet on a boy!
Totally! I think an Edelweiss would inevitably experience difficulties with folks pronouncing and spelling her name wrong, but she’d also be met with a lot of love and awe over such a grand, lovely name. I’d definitely give her a strong nickname, too, so that she could still give her name (maybe Edie or Wiley, eg.) at a Starbucks without having to spell and enunciate Edelweiss every time.
Hmm… nothing, really! I’ve never meet an Edelweiss, so I’ve nothing to expect! I suppose I’d imagine her as spunky and spirited, like a little garden flower.

Eidelweiss…
[name_u]Dell[/name_u]
[name_f]Della[/name_f]
Eida/Ada
[name_u]Eddie[/name_u]
Wi/Vi
[name_f]Icy[/name_f]
[name_u]Issy[/name_u]
[name_f]El[/name_f]
[name_u]Dessie[/name_u]
I associate it more with girls since it’s floral but it could work on a boy.
It reminds me of Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f], so I’d wonder if their parent/s liked that

I usually think female but I think it could be used on a boy as well as it does have a neutral sound to it. I definitely think it’s usable as first as long as you have a nickname in mind, brave but usable. I wouldn’t really assume anything about them, except maybe they had some kind of [name_m]German[/name_m] decent or their parents liked nature names. Here’s some possible nn’s~
[name_f]Edie[/name_f]
Dela/Della
Weiss/Wise
[name_f]Elle[/name_f]
[name_u]Del[/name_u]
[name_u]Eddie[/name_u]
[name_m]Wes[/name_m]
Wessie
[name_u]Winn[/name_u]
[name_m]Edel[/name_m]
Desna
Desa
[name_f]Eda[/name_f]
[name_m]Esa[/name_m]
[name_u]Ice[/name_u]
Why (or Wi, Y)
[name_u]Owl[/name_u] (super stretchy but maybe?)

[name_f]Edie[/name_f] would be my pick. It feels feminine and extremely unusable. With the meaning “noble” + “white” and the fact that the Wikipedia disambiguation page for [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] has a whole section titled “Nazi-rated”, I’d steer far and clear.
