I’ve recently rediscovered the name [name]Ernest[/name]. I love [name]Hemingway[/name], and I think it’s a stong name ready for revivialy. I’m wondering if there are any nicknames for [name]Ernest[/name] besides [name]Ernie[/name]- I’ll neer stop picturing a muppet- that I haven’t found yet? And what do you think of [name]Ernest[/name]?
Thanks in advance!
[name]Hi[/name] [name]Athena[/name]-
I love [name]Hemingway[/name] as well, so I can see the appeal of choosing the name. But [name]Hemingway[/name] himself actually hated his first name. He always felt that it was too tied to The Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name] (another one of my favorites) and I believe almost everyone called him [name]Hemingway[/name] (or Hem). I recently re-read A Moveable Feast and his hatred for his name is repeated throughout the book. At one point he encounters another man named [name]Ernest[/name] and writes of his pleasure in being able to call the man such a horrible name as [name]Ernest[/name], even though he answered to it too. So I’d say that if you love the name for the name itself, then keep it on the list. But if you mainly like it because of Papa [name]Hemingway[/name], I’d find another way to honor him.
As for a nickname, I agree that not using one is the best option. I think [name]Ernie[/name] really takes away from [name]Ernest[/name]'s appeal.
Thank you for all of your responses! They’ve given me some ideas (btw, I’m not pregnant, but this name might go on my list,) and I’ll consider not using a nickname.
Keep the responses coming! Thanks!
Oh, I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ernest[/name]! I’ve got it in a combo at the moment, very Edwardian - [name]Edward[/name] [name]Ebenezer[/name] [name]Ernest[/name] S_______.
Seriousy, I think it is underused and gorgeous and kind of fits in - modern virtue names are getting popular, and it familiar enough because it’s also a word (word names are also popular). Not sure about nicknames though, other than [name]Ernie[/name], as you said. [name]Don[/name]'t know if ‘Est’ is enough/a legitimate nickname. I read somewhere that [name]Ernest[/name] [name]Hemingway[/name]'s nickname was Bumby, but that’s not a very flattering nickname in this day and age ([name]IMO[/name]). But I think [name]Ernest[/name] totally rocks, glad to someone else out there is keen on it too!
I don’t especially love [name]Ernest[/name], but I do love that it brings to mind The Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name], which could possibly be my favorite literary work ever. I can’t really think of any nns other than [name]Ernie[/name] or Nest, but I think something like Nesto could be cool, taken from [name]Ernesto[/name]?
Oh, I adore [name]Ernest[/name]! I’d probably nn [name]Ernst[/name] (though I think [name]Ernie[/name] is cute). Also wondered whether or not nn [name]East[/name] could work?
My literary nerdiness is shining through, but Bumby was actually the nickname of [name]Hemingway[/name]'s son [name]Jack[/name]. [name]Hemingway[/name]'s first wife, [name]Hadley[/name], called him [name]Tatie[/name]. But I don’t think that has anything to do with [name]Ernest[/name], and even if it did, it’s probably not the best choice.
Go with [name]Earnest[/name] if you like it. I knew a man named [name]Earnest[/name] and it’s a lovely name. [name]Ernie[/name] is so cute- or you could go a little off the path and just call him [name]Arnie[/name]- I love that name.
I’m in a rush so I haven’t read the replies, I just want to say that I 100% agree and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]. [name_u]LOVE[/name_u]. BUT I can’t handle [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] being the inevitable nick name. I don’t know if there is a way around it. I can’t think of another nickname. I wish I could! I love “The Important of Being [name_m]Earnest[/name_m]”. [name_m]AH[/name_m], this name needs a revival indeed.
I adore [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]. Not stuffy to me … retro cool. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] too actually. Muppet or not. Reclaim [name_m]Ernie[/name_m] I say!
[name_m]Both[/name_m] my great-grandfather’s names were [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]. One went by [name_m]Ernie[/name_m], the other went by [name_m]Ern[/name_m].
