I am writing a story atm with the love interest of my main character named Raffaello di Marco. He is of Italian descent and I’m not sure what to call him as a nickname. I’m leaning more towards Raf, what do you think?
The first ones that came to mind were [name_u]Rafa[/name_u] and [name_m]Raf[/name_m]. I personally think [name_u]Rafa[/name_u] is absolutely adorable and would go with that myself, but [name_m]Raf[/name_m] is also a good option.
I like [name_u]Rafa[/name_u] too but I think [name_m]Raf[/name_m] sounds a bit more grown up if that makes sense?

Yes, I totally understand that! [name_u]Rafa[/name_u] definitely did sound more childish or informal to me as well before I heard it on an adult man in a show (an occasional nickname used for a [name_m]Rafael[/name_m] in [name_m]Law[/name_m] & Order: SVU) and now it’s actually [name_m]Raf[/name_m] that seems more childhood nickname-like to me.
[name_m]Raf[/name_m] is a good idea! Maybe [name_m]Marco[/name_m] would also work.

What a cool name for a character! I have a [name_u]Raffaele[/name_u] myself !! I call him [name_m]Ra[/name_m], [name_m]Ra[/name_m] [name_m]Ra[/name_m], Raffaelino lol but everyone here (North America) calls him [name_m]Raffi[/name_m]. In [name_f]Italy[/name_f] they’d call him Raffo or “Lele” and in Spain [name_u]Rafa[/name_u].
If your character’s love interest is American- you can call him [name_m]Raf[/name_m] for sure but it isn’t realistic if they are both Italian.
