I’d really like to use my maiden name, [name]Tobin[/name], for my son. My husband is wary since he hates the nickname [name]Toby[/name], and it’s pretty certain people will call him that if there isn’t another option. Any ideas for other nicknames? Some people used to call my dad “[name]Bay[/name]” (as in [name]Bay[/name]-[name]Tobin[/name]), but I don’t see that sticking :). I also considered using initials, but nothing feels right. Thoughts?
[name]Tobin[/name] is nice, but you are right about [name]Toby[/name] I dont care for it at all. [name]Tony[/name] is another nn option. I think if you corrected people though you might be able to get away with just [name]Tobin[/name]. T.J. is another option.
I’m not sure “[name]Tobin[/name]” will fall into the auto-nn category. It just sort of rolls together in a nice way; the emphasis is on the first syllable, so the -in just sort of finishes the name. “[name]Toby[/name]” isn’t shorter or more user-friendly, so I wouldn’t worry about people lapsing into a nn just because. If they do, just tell them you’re not using a nn and prefer his full name, which is very nice, btw. I like the way it sounds when I say it!
I can’t think of other nn ideas, but for what it’s worth, I figured I’d tell you that the one [name]Tobin[/name] I know never gets called [name]Toby[/name]. I agree with the pp that it probably won’t be a big problem. It’s a cool name I think!
Why does [name]Tobin[/name] need a nickname? It’s just two syllables. Besides, I know a [name]Tobin[/name] and he has never, ever been called [name]Toby[/name], so it’s definitely possible to avoid that particular nickname.
Good feedback, thank you! I just assumed people would shorten it to [name]Toby[/name], so it’s good to know there are “non-[name]Toby[/name]” Tobins out there :)!
I agree with everyone else - I don’t think [name]Tobin[/name] would automatically be nicknamed. The only nn’s I could think of, besides [name]Toby[/name] (which I do think is cute), were “T” and Bin/[name]Ben[/name]. I do know a [name]Tobin[/name] who goes by [name]Toby[/name], but his parents told everyone when he was born that they would be calling him [name]Toby[/name]. I know someone else who has always gone by [name]Toby[/name] (short for [name]Tobias[/name]), and some of his friends just call him “T”.
Great name, by the way!
