nicknames of Wilder and Huck

I noticed that some people are using [name_m]Huck[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. I brought this up and it was immediately announced how cool it would be to have a [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] and a [name_m]Huck[/name_m] (favorite combos [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]). What are your thoughts on [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] and [name_m]Huck[/name_m] as “nicknames” This all revolves around if the future holds two more boys.

I pretty against people going by middle names because I work with kids and I’ve heard plenty of them express how they hate it. [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] tried so hard to get people to call her by her first name, she desperately wanted to be [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], but her mother insisted and I have seen her cry about it. [name_u]Seth[/name_u] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] both really wish they could be [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] and [name_m]Brendon[/name_m] but they can’t because their mother insists that she wanted them to be [name_u]Seth[/name_u] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and they would use those names. I have lots more examples of kids I’ve worked with who wish they could go by their real names.

So I always say name the baby what you want to call it and don’t force him to go by a middle name. If he wants to go by his middle, that’s different, but naming a baby [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and calling him [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] is just strange to me. Why not [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m]? It’s really handsome and cool and matches the coolness of [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m] just reversed. I also think [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] can work fine as a nickname for [name_m]Wil[/name_m]- names. [name_m]William[/name_m] nn [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] etc.

I’ll end my rant now :stuck_out_tongue: [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] and [name_m]Huck[/name_m] are cool brothers. [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] are cool to in their contrast. Sorry to rant at you, I just have heard so many sad stories from kids that I feel really strongly about it.

I can understand what you are saying. I have actually always been against it myself. I have never ran into people, including children, that had issues with it, just could not understand it. I know many people will use a family name for a first name and than go by their middle name. Why did they just not flip the combos around. But than I started thinking that often times people are given a nickname they use their whole lives also. I love [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] but I also love [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Poet[/name_f], [name_m]Wilder[/name_m], and [name_m]Huck[/name_m]. All of the names, except for [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] (and [name_m]Huck[/name_m] only through [name_m]Henry[/name_m]) honors family or has special meaning to the family. My children can have names that are well known and names that are unique. They can have the option of fitting in more if they would like or standing out and being different (all in good ways).
