Nicknames that have nothing to do with your name

I was thinking about this… there are plenty of nicknames that have to do with the letters in your name, but what nicknames were you called that had nothing to do with your name? The nicknames that had more to do with your personality, for instance.

I was called Yaya by my sister because she couldn’t pronounce my name– [name_u]Andrea[/name_u]. Sometimes she still calls me that, but jokingly.

What names were you called as a little kid that had no association with your name? Please, tell the story as well, if you have one! I’d love to hear the crazy/amazing names your families bestowed upon you.

[name_f]My[/name_f] best friend calls me [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], my name is [name_f]Tara[/name_f]. I call her [name_f]Mildred[/name_f], her name is [name_f]Lacey[/name_f]. We gave ourselves old lady names as we think they will suit us when we are older, we exclusively call each other these names.

I have two childhood nicknames that only family uses.
[name_f]My[/name_f] mom said my grandmother started calling me Porcelain [name_m]Doll[/name_m] because of my features. Dark hair, rosie cheeks, and pale skin. It evolved into [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] and is still a common nickname my close family calls me.

[name_f]My[/name_f] mom called me [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White for the same reason as [name_f]Dolly[/name_f]. She only calls me this now, and it has been shortened to [name_f]Snow[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] youngest is nicknamed [name_f]Nanna[/name_f]. At first it was [name_f]Banana[/name_f] due to it rhyming with [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and eventually it evolved into [name_f]Nanna[/name_f] and has stuck.

[name_f]My[/name_f] oldests nickname is [name_f]May[/name_f]. Her great aunt for some reason called her [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] even thought [name_f]May[/name_f] was not her middle name. When the great aunt passed away we called my daughter [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] a lot and now her nickname is mainly [name_f]May[/name_f].

I’ve gotten icky from my youngest cousin who couldn’t pronounce my name her older brother still won’t let me forget it and will sing the icky [name_f]Vicki[/name_f] song from fairy odd parents … Hmm I’ve been called a rabbit for my obsession with veggies , Blondie , rogue like from x-men , jj although those are my middle initials , boney I was very skinny , [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] after a tv show , bloom after a tv show, [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] after a tv show, bones after temperance [name_u]Brennan[/name_u] , daphne like from scooby doo because we r both danger prone I’m sure theirs more but that’s all I can think of that doesn’t actually have to do with my name otherwise I could list like 50 more

[name_f]My[/name_f] eldest DD is nicknamed Buggy by family - came from a pair of pyjamas she had as a baby with bugs on it TBH. She’s grown into the NN definitely though - has a pet spider that free ranges around our house (we live in Australia and it’s a harmless Huntsman), loves caterpillars especially of the very hungry variety, and has a general interest in gardening and nature.

DD2 has kept her in utero NN of [name_m]Bean[/name_m] or Beanie [name_u]Baby[/name_u] - might change and develop as she gets older but it’s one of the names we call her for now.

So I have Bug and [name_m]Bean[/name_m] - absolutely unrelated to their real FNs.

I am exclusively called Nooshi, even though my name is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. I haven’t been called [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] since I was about 2 weeks old, so I don’t even think it is a nickname anymore: I am Nooshi. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is what is on the birth certificate, but I am strongly considering getting it changed to avoid confusion. I also have a lot of other nn’s: Nooshita, [name_m]Bubba[/name_m] (like the character on [name_m]Forrest[/name_m] Gump. I went through a big stage of putting spinach in EVERYTHING, hence the nn), Hachimitsu (honey in Japanese. Dad is a beekeeper, and [name_f]Nana[/name_f] was Japanese), Hati (bee in Japanese), Pear Pear (when I discovered Nashi meant pear in Japanese, so Nashi Pear’s were really Pear Pear’s, I thought it was the funniest thing ever.), [name_m]Bear[/name_m], [name_f]Honey[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f] [name_f]Bee[/name_f], [name_f]Janis[/name_f] (I was born on the same day as [name_f]Janis[/name_f] [name_m]Joplin[/name_m]), Nooshitron 3000 (what my art teacher used to call me as an affectionate nn, because I worked so hard and so fast.), etc. There are heaps, and I could go on for hours :).

I get “Swiv” exclusively from my grandma because when I was a baby, my head use to swivel around a lot to see what I could hear (I was the first grandkid :P)

When I was little, apparently I used to bounce around a lot, so I got called [name_m]Tigger[/name_m]-bounce quite a bit by my mum. As far back as I can remember, she’s called me pumpkin pie, but I haven’t a clue why, sometimes it’s pudding tops as well. She has been trying to eat my toes since I was born, so it might have something to do with that. Other than that it’s usually Zimmy, Zimmy zim, or [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Peach[/name_f] (nothing to do with the [name_m]Mario[/name_m] games, my middle name means princess). [name_f]My[/name_f] aunt sometimes calls me princess too. There’s something else my mum calls me but it’s way too embarrassing to mention, but I’ll just say we’re both pretty into toilet humour.

[name_f]My[/name_f] sister’s name is [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], and my kids call her [name_f]Lala[/name_f]. Completely out of nowhere.

It’s exceptionally weird, because my grandmother called her aunt [name_f]Lala[/name_f] as well (though her aunt’s name was [name_f]Helena[/name_f] so [name_f]Lala[/name_f] wasn’t too far out of the park). When i told her that they call my sister [name_f]Lala[/name_f], she started to cry!

Georgia[/name_f]][name_f]Belle[/name_f] - [name_f]My[/name_f] mom has called me this since birth, before I even had a name. She called me this because [name_f]Belle[/name_f] means Beauty or Beautiful in [name_m]French[/name_m]. I am almost 30 and she still calls me this.
[name_f]Mimi[/name_f] - [name_f]My[/name_f] little brother couldn’t pronounce my name and came up with this. I’ve always cherished this nickname even though he doesn’t call me this anymore.

Ducky, When my brother was a baby he had this rubber duck and my cousin would run around getting it for him she would even quack one day my little bro stopped playing with ducky ( I think it got ruined ) but still called for ducky knowing are cousin would come running from that day forth my cousin has proudly said her names ducky even in school she’s 16 now and all younger kids are told her name is ducky and the story behind it
Papa [name_u]Texas[/name_u] , are grandfather lives in [name_u]Texas[/name_u] and this stuck
Bin bin/bince, same little one who called me icky she had problems with v’s my brother was nn this when he was a toddler and went by it till he was 12
I’ve had friends who at some point have gone by ketchup, doggie, tiffaroo, kitty
I’ve also been
bookworm,
know-it-all,
granger, like from HP
ghost, long story
smart [name_m]Alec[/name_m], a cleaned up version of my uncles nn for me lol
geeky [name_f]Vicki[/name_f] , my little sis came up with this one when learning to talk started out as
gee gee
Geeky,
[name_f]Cinderella[/name_f], my only nn I truly hate I almost didn’t put it on here but I’m called it a lot no matter how much I hate it
rapunzel, I’ve got really long hair
[name_f]Belle[/name_f], was one of mine since are attitudes are pretty much the same and belle was the only princess I liked as a kid but I’ve proudly passed this nn to my little sis

I call one of my very best friends [name_m]Bob[/name_m]. I don’t remember how it started, but I have never referred to her by her actual name since! She’s always either [name_m]Bob[/name_m] or [name_u]Bobby[/name_u].

[name_f]My[/name_f] sister calls me [name_m]Little[/name_m] Duck or Ducky pretty frequently. I think she got it from the hunger games when [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] calls Prim little duck, haha.my name is [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], so obviously it has nothing to do with my name.

[name_f]Snow[/name_f] White. But, also, Magpie. [name_f]My[/name_f] name’s [name_f]Megan[/name_f], so it’s a little similar, but it spawns from my love of “shiny objects,” or so says my mother.

There are probably lots more, I just can’t think of 'em!

[name_f]My[/name_f] uncle calls my four year old cousin, [name_u]Auden[/name_u], Bug for some reason. I don’t really know the story behind her nickname because they live across the country from us. Either way it’s adorable. He has nicknames for both of my cousins. [name_f]My[/name_f] other cousin who is two, [name_f]Cora[/name_f], is called [name_f]Cora[/name_f]-[name_f]Bora[/name_f], [name_f]Bora[/name_f] [name_f]Bora[/name_f], or sometimes just [name_f]Bora[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] little sister is named [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], and when she was younger she had an obsession with [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f] so we called her “Cinder-[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]” (like the mice do!). She’s always trying to establish new nicknames for herself (she’s seven). Last [name_u]December[/name_u] when Frozen came out, she wanted to change her name to [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and when that didn’t work, she tried to change it to [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. Her name is [name_f]Eliana[/name_f], so [name_f]Anna[/name_f] wouldn’t be too far off for a nickname, but neither stuck. Now she just wants to have three kids named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], and [name_m]Kristoff[/name_m]. [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is pushing for the nickname Maleficent after watching the new movie. She wants to be Maleficent for Halloween.

[name_f]My[/name_f] other sister, [name_f]Leah[/name_f], is called Lii Mii (not sure how to spell it, but that’s how we spell it on the Wii. [name_f]My[/name_f] dad made everyone’s name have “ii” in it like Wii. I’m Abbii, he’s Daddii, mom is Mommii, and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is Ellii). That has to do with her name, but even at eleven she is called that.

Another story with [name_f]Leah[/name_f], when she was a baby she couldn’t say “[name_f]Nana[/name_f] and Grandpa” which is what we called my mom’s parents. So, she called them “[name_f]Nina[/name_f] and B’pa”. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] has been long gone, she is [name_f]Nana[/name_f] again but B’pa has stuck to this day. I think he really likes B’pa because my mom and aunt called his father G’pa.

When I first moved to Kansas, everyone at dance called me Michigan (because that’s where I used to live) but now they say I’m not Michigan anymore because I’ve lived in Kansas for too long. The girls at dance all have nicknames: [name_f]Briana[/name_f] is Anairb or Wranoskasaurus (her name spelled backwards and her as a dinosaur), [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] is Squid or [name_u]Syd[/name_u]-Squid, [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] is Ashy-bo-bo or Spaghetti, [name_f]Cami[/name_f] (full name [name_u]Camryn[/name_u]) is [name_f]Carmelita[/name_f] (don’t even ask) and [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] is simply [name_u]Bay[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] hip hop teacher, Mr. Lukky or Mr. [name_m]Manuel[/name_m] (depending on the student. His nickname is Lukky) is called Mrs. Mer mer mer because of something a girl called him in class.
Another dance team nickname, is Murredith. This girl named [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] joined our team this year and at the beginning of the year, Mrs. [name_u]Allison[/name_u] called her [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] because she insisted that [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] looked like a [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]. [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] embraced her nickname (now even her mom calls her Murredith and it’s written on all her costumes!). The Murredith spelling comes from Mrs. [name_u]Allison[/name_u] trying to correct herself but failing. She also is called Murrrrrrrrrr-kayla.
Lastly, my jazz teacher and competition team instructor had a baby boy this year in [name_u]June[/name_u]. Her name is [name_u]Allison[/name_u], her husband is [name_m]Aaron[/name_m], and her daughter is [name_u]Avery[/name_u] so we told her that she needed to give her baby another A name. She wanted a boy, so she would have a son and a daughter, so we looked for A boy names and [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] came up. We told her she needed to name him [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] (last name) and then make him run for president. She named him [name_m]Cooper[/name_m], but at recital Mrs. [name_u]Allison[/name_u] gave my jazz team (the five girls who’s nicknames were listed above and me) permission to call him [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]. Lol.

[name_f]My[/name_f] friend [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] calls me [name_u]Abby[/name_u]-by, but that’s understandable. Maybe I’m just hard to nickname, lol.

[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Amanda[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] brother called me Dandy when he was little because he couldn’t pronounce [name_f]Amanda[/name_f], so sometimes my relatives will call me that. A few people will jokingly call me Badger because I’m obsessed with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and I’m a Hufflepuff, and a badger is the symbol for Hufflepuff house (hence my username).
[name_f]My[/name_f] boyfriend and I have a few ridiculous pet names for each other that are inside jokes. For example, he’ll call me Rabbit and I’ll call him Goose. I don’t even remember how it started.
The funniest one I know of is my cousin, [name_u]Courtney[/name_u]. When the same brother was little, for some unfathomable reason, he was unable to say [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] or anything that sounded like it - if you told him to say [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], he would say, “Doo Doo!” And we have no idea why. So that’s her nickname!

Ugh… I really need to dig deep now!
[name_f]My[/name_f] brother couldn’t say my name so it became Lisbebe (pretty close to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]).
Then when I got older - in school some people tried to call me [name_f]Liz[/name_f] and I died!
I ended up going by E or Leaz (prn. Less) for a good amount of years and when I went on a dance camp a girl refused to call me anything but [name_f]Anna[/name_f] // [name_f]Anne[/name_f].
I’ve been [name_f]Nakisha[/name_f] - too long to explain and now I’m [name_f]Lyra[/name_f].
So… I haven’t been the easiest to nick name.
[name_f]My[/name_f] brother - [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] - was nick named P, Philler or our last name. Again, not really something like mine.

From my parents: [name_f]Missy[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] ([name_f]Missy[/name_f] from my name but [name_f]May[/name_f] for my birth month)

From friends: [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], Froggie, [name_u]James[/name_u], Pear, Meerkat and MarASSa (a play off my name, pointing out my, ahem, assets).

Growing up I was called Nette by my maternal grandmother because she thought it was elegant. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Jennette[/name_f]. Now all of my family and close friends call me Nette.

[name_f]My[/name_f] paternal grandfather called me [name_m]Kermit[/name_m] to counter this elegance and drive my grandmother nuts. That actually lasted a long time and my paternal grandmother continued to call me [name_m]Kermit[/name_m] until her death a couple of years ago.

[name_f]My[/name_f] father’s extended family called me Bones because I loved to collect rocks and bones when I was a little girl.

[name_f]My[/name_f] best friend’s dad called me [name_m]Bob[/name_m] because at first he couldn’t remember my name, it stuck. Through high school he called me that and I was over there a lot.

[name_f]My[/name_f] high school math teacher called me [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] because he thought I looked like a [name_f]Virginia[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] high school librarian called me the [name_f]Queen[/name_f] of [name_f]Sheba[/name_f]. I could never figure this one out. She called me it the first time i walked into the library. I still am not sure what I did to acquire this nickname, lol.

This isn’t about me, but my fourteen year old friend is [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]. When [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]'s mother had her, the relatives hated the name. So, the mom called her [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f], her first and middle, to try and get the relatives to warm up to it. So, she was [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] until she was three or four. Now, whenever her mom wants to get her attention, instead of saying her first and middle name, they made up a string of names: [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Diane[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]. I have no idea where they came up with those names.

I call my brother [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] [name_u]Mischa[/name_u]. [name_u]Mischa[/name_u] is a Russian variation of [name_u]Michael[/name_u], and [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] is an English variation of the name, so it’s kind of related.
