We named our son [name_u]Nikola[/name_u]. Middle name is [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. He is six months old and I am still unsure if this is the name for him. I don’t know if it’s too girly and unique and whether it fits him or not. Not sure if we should have named him his middle name instead or something entirely different. Thoughts on the name? Is it too weird?
It’s a little bit feminine, traditionally, but I don’t think that’s a problem at all! If you decide that you like the name but that it is a little feminine for your tastes, or just for his personality, you could always add an i and turn it into [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m].
[name_u]Nikola[/name_u] might be a bit feminine but definitely not girly. I think the ‘k’ gives the name an edge, and nicknames like [name_u]Nik[/name_u] and [name_u]Nicky[/name_u] have always been androgynous to me (though leaning closer to masculine). Plus, I don’t think [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] is weird at all. It’s actually kind of striking to me. I like that it’s not totally common, but it’s also not unheard of either.
I like the suggestion of adding an ‘i’ at the end, or you could go with [name_m]Nicolas[/name_m] / [name_m]Nikolas[/name_m] for a more traditionally masculine name, since you’re also worried about [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] being too unique.
I think [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] is a fine name. I knew a [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] growing up, and never thought it was too girly. I rather liked it because it was unique and there were no other [name_u]Nikola[/name_u]'s to get confused with. That being said, it doesn’t really matter what other people think, but how you feel. If you feel it isn’t right, then I think you should change it. Go with your gut!
I love [name_u]Nikola[/name_u]! For [name_f]Tesla[/name_f]? It’s a cool, strong name, and he could always shorten to [name_u]Nik[/name_u]/[name_u]Niko[/name_u] if he wants a more clearly masculine name.
The suggestion of changing it to [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] is also a good one - that’s an amazing name and definitely masculine.
What do you usually call him?
I think [name_u]Nikola[/name_u] is great. It’s so nice to see it used. I definitely don’t think it’s too girly.
