We were blessed with a beautiful baby girl in [name_u]August[/name_u] who we named [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], pronounced Mad-uh-len. At the time I was worried about spelling issues and pronunciation problems. My loving brother announced in the hospital he would call her [name_f]Leni[/name_f] and that would solve the issue ha. It was cute because my daughters Great Great maternal Grandmother was [name_f]Helen/name_f and her Great Paternal Grandfather was [name_m]Leonard/name_m. I never even thought of that as a nickname.
I always thought we would call her [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. I tried and it just didnt catch on. There is also sooo many Maddies out there! My husband and 3 year old son have never called her anything but [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] or [name_m]Bean[/name_m]( a nickname we gave her when I was pregnant because we did not know the gender).
I have also tried [name_f]Leni[/name_f], and that hasn’t really stuck either but I seem to prefer it over [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. I have another brother who ALWAYS calls her [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. It’s not that I don’t like it, but I kinda cringe a little when I hear it. It’s not her name. We dont call her that. I always makes sure I use her full name in response when I hear that, hoping it catches on without having to bring it up. I feel if I bring it up it will come across petty. I mean [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is a common nickname for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], people are going to say it, and who knows it might fit her later! I understand when she is older she might want to be called that and her friends will call her that. I will respect that. But for know we just don’t call her that.
[name_m]How[/name_m] can I gently explain we prefer to call her [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], at least for now, until she grows into it or unless she express otherwise when she is older?
Also what do you think of the nickname [name_f]Leni[/name_f]? I know children do not always need a nickname. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering.
Sorry for rambling on and writing a novel over a silly nickname issue. I hope I was clear enough for you to follow my baby name drama! I had postpartum and was so upset over her name for months and if we chose the right name!! She is growing into it beautifully!
I think [name_f]Leni[/name_f] is a wonderful nickname for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], and I love the familial significance that it has. If you want that to be her nickname, I’d say continue calling her that. However, if you don’t want to call her that, then don’t. Not everyone needs a nickname.
I’m not sure if you’re looking for other nn possibilities for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], but I think that in addition to [name_f]Leni[/name_f] there are options such as [name_f]Lena[/name_f], [name_u]Laney[/name_u], [name_f]Addie[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Maydee[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_u]Dell[/name_u], [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f].
As for your brother, could you simply tell him that you have a negative association with the nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] and you’d prefer that he goes with the full name or a different nickname, until your daughter is old enough to choose for herself? I think that’s reasonable.
