"Normal" Names for Baby Girl

Thank you so much! Seems like [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Marion[/name] and [name]Holly[/name] are the most popular ones… and no one likes [name]Vilma[/name] and [name]Carmel[/name].

When i use the term normal, I mean in comparison to our original list… which has Seawillow and Tinuviel on it.

Gotcha  I think the ones you listed just tend to have a bit more universal appeal is all. I think (at least in the states) a little [name]Carmel[/name] would probably get almost as many questions as a Tinuviel. Though I had an Aunt [name]Carmel[/name]-[name]Lee[/name], I’ve never heard it anywhere else.

[name]Aurora[/name], [name]Emma[/name], [name]Holly[/name], [name]Isobel[/name], and [name]Laurel[/name]

[name]Nessa[/name], [name]Laurel[/name] and [name]Isobel[/name] are my favourites off this list.

I love [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Laurel[/name] and [name]Nessa[/name]

For me, a top five list would go:
[name]Nessa[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Holly[/name]
[name]Marion[/name]
[name]Isobel[/name]

I like [name]Aurora[/name] in principle, but have trouble pronouncing it. Same as I do with [name]Rory[/name].

Another longer name for [name]Emma[/name] is [name]Emmaliese[/name].

[name]Aurora[/name] - adore!
[name]Carmel[/name] - I’m assuming this is car-[name]MEL[/name] like [name]Carmel[/name] by the Sea in [name]California[/name]? My only worry is that is looks and sounds very much like caramel
[name]Emma[/name] - this seems almost too normal for your amazing other list, haha. I love the idea of [name]Emilia[/name] or [name]Emmeline[/name] (I say [name]EM[/name]-muh-leen) as a full name for an [name]Emma[/name]
[name]Hennie[/name] - I am mostly thinking of a female chicken, what about [name]Hattie[/name] or, if your feeling adventurous, [name]Henriette[/name]/a nn [name]Hennie[/name]?
[name]Holly[/name] - I know a [name]Holland[/name] nn [name]Holly[/name], she’s pretty cute!
[name]Isobel[/name] - lovely and classic. There is something so lovely about this spelling
[name]Laurel[/name] - love it
[name]Louise[/name] - I love love [name]Eloise[/name], but [name]Louise[/name] just doesn’t do it for me. I say them a bit differently though I don’t think most people make the distinction between [name]EL[/name]-oh-eez and LOO-eez, it’s the slight difference between the “oh” sound and the “oo” sound, plus the “[name]El[/name]” sound at the beginning that make me like [name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Marion[/name] - this is a really interesting choice! I like it and also like [name]Maren[/name] ([name]MARE[/name]-in) and [name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Nessa[/name] - Seems a bit like a nickname, but it’s pretty. Kind of close to [name]Nessie[/name]? Like [name]Loch[/name] Ness monster?
[name]Polina[/name] - I think [name]Paulina[/name] seems a bit dated, but the o some how makes it a bit fresher, I worry that spelling would get messed up a lot
[name]Vilma[/name] - It seems a bit close to [name]Velma[/name] like Scooby-doo or [name]Wilma[/name] like the flinstones, haha. Have you thought about [name]Willa[/name], [name]Alma[/name], or [name]Willow[/name]?

Great “normal” list though I love some of the names on your other list quite a bit as well.

Top (not in order, I can’t decide, haha!):
[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Emma[/name]
[name]Marion[/name]
[name]Isobel[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]

[name]Aurora[/name] is my preteen daughter’s name.
I obviously love the name but here’s some feedback:
So far she has never met another [name]Aurora[/name] under the age of 70, though a friend last month said they had run into a preschooler with that name.
Small children will occasionally call her “ah-wor-wa” but most people don’t have problems pronouncing it.
The only person who ever had problems spelling it was a mother with three daughters with yooneeck-ly spelled names–make of that what you will.
She likes her name, but wishes that she could meet other girls with her name.

Thank you guys again, great feedback! [name]Carmel[/name] is garden in hebrew, [name]Nessa[/name] means miracle (I’m trying to sneak in some hebrew stuff)! [name]Hennie[/name] (henn-ee) is a norwegian name I simply adore, it’s so clean and pretty. [name]Emma[/name] (if we chose this) would stay [name]Emma[/name], it’s a very special name to me, as is [name]Louise[/name].

vickyintx, thank you, great to hear from someone with experience on the name! senorita, thanks for your comments, very thorough!

What do people think of [name]Elvira[/name]? It’s one of my favourite “normal” girl names, but boyfriend doesn’t like it for some reason.

[name]Elvira[/name]! I actually work with a woman named [name]Elvira[/name], and there is quite a backstory. She’s 94 years old and a retired scientist and bridge fanatic (card game), still drives a red convertible around town in the summer. At our local library she is the rare/antique book expert and maintains online listings of our valuable donated books that aren’t added to the collection. She’s managed to figure out (mostly) how to do computers. A year ago our library director asked me if I’d be willing to “help” her, meaning clean up all the typos, photograph the books, clarify descriptions…We have a rather intense working relationship, meaning I sometimes avoid her when feeling vulnerable. She’s unpredictable and doesn’t hesitate to yell to make her point. She’s singlehandedly raised more money for our library than any other one person. She pronounces her name [name]El[/name]-veera. I’d never be able to use the name without channeling her…

Ha! Thuja I like your story. [name]Elvira[/name]… I think of elves (good) and viruses (bad.) [name]Elva[/name] maybe… or Tinuviel. [name]Alvar[/name] on a man is pretty handsome.
[name]Hennie[/name] makes me think of [name]Henny[/name] [name]Penny[/name], but it’s adorable and frosty and Norwegian. I like Hanya too.
[name]Wylda[/name] is another simple beauty that might fit with your wilderness theme. My husband thinks it sounds too much like [name]Wilma[/name] (as in the Flintstones.) Phooey.
[name]Carmel[/name]… Not Hespera? Hespera has such depth if you’re thinking about a garden name. [name]Carmel[/name]… I think of caramel. (Says the woman who loves the name [name]Ginger[/name])

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Nessa[/name] (reminescent of Nessarose from Wicked which I think is beautiful) and [name]Isobel[/name].

Thuja: that’s so cool, I love stories like that!

emma: my sister called dibs on [name]Alvar[/name]… she loves A-names. Hespera and Tinuviel are still on our “real” list, this is just backup!!

entangler: Nessarose is such a beautiful name, the character though, not so nice.

I love [name]Isobel[/name], [name]Louise[/name] and [name]Nessa[/name].
I know a baby names [name]Louise[/name], and she’s adorable! I also know a six year old named [name]Isobel[/name] who is Norwegian. It’s the kind of name I didn’t think would actually work here, but it really does once you get a little used to it  Her sister is called [name]Leandra[/name] which would be a lot sweeter if [name]Leander[/name] wasn’t so popular. [name]Nessa[/name] makes me think of home.

[name]Laurel[/name] would be my pick!

[name]Love[/name]:
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Holly[/name]

Like:
[name]Polina[/name] *my fave for you
[name]Nessa[/name]
[name]Isobel[/name]

Here’s a thought: Hespera Niniane or Hespera Endellion could be nicknamed [name]Hennie[/name].

Ooh, there’s an idea! ([name]How[/name] cute is Hespera Endellion?) Thanks, hun, you’re amazing!

Dearest: a norwegian [name]Isobel[/name], that’s amazing! And [name]Leandra[/name] is cute… but [name]Leander[/name] is popular isn’t it. [name]Every[/name] time I’m visiting my family, I meet tons of little [name]Leander[/name]'s.

Thanks everyone, I think my little list will be: [name]Holly[/name], [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Nessa[/name], [name]Marion[/name] and [name]Polina[/name].

Yes Nessarose is beautiful it’s unfortunate that she’s no good! I wouldn’t exactly consider Elphaba to be useable though she would make a great namesake.

[name]Nessa[/name] is my favourite from your revised “normal” list, but I just adore [name]Isobel[/name], that spelling is devine.

Of your list I like [name]Hennie[/name] a lot, but it sounds like a nn to me, so I would be looking for what the ‘full’ name would be - [name]Henrietta[/name]?

I’d also vote for [name]Holly[/name].
