NOT naming a kid after a famous person haha

Hahaha

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] is very associated with the actor for me, even without the L in the middle. I’m a teenager and I do think the association is familiar to most young people as he’s very famous and in many successful franchises. I think he’s a household name, at least in the US, and I’m surprised that people think otherwise/haven’t heard of him!

I think [name_u]Sam[/name_u] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] would be totally fine, though, if you’re open to using [name_u]Sam[/name_u] as the full first name.

I think only those over a certain age will make the association. And that his generation definitely won’t. So while your friends or aquaintences MIGHT say something, the person living with it might not be all that negatively affected

I have no idea who the actor is, but, since you dislike him/don’t admire him enough that it’s what you think of when you hear the combo, I’d personally find something else

I automatically think of the legend [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] L [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] then ponder on why you don’t admire this amazing actor who was revolutionary for the African-American actors (along with [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] [name_m]Freeman[/name_m] of course) but anyways your entitled to your opinion of course and we’re just discussing [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] as a name.

So anyways looking at [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] as a name I think it’s too close to the actor it was my immediate thought with this in mind I would look at other names. Maybe [name_u]Daniel[/name_u] or even [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]? They sound similar to [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] but avoid the association.

I don’t care that he’s African American. He’s coarse and plays in movies that are largely a waste of brain power to watch (minus marvel, but I actually had no idea he was in them). Humor by way of profanity is cheap and not my style. Nor is excessive violence. I like to protect my eyes, my heart.

I can’t think of single actor I’d honor, whatever color they might be. I also don’t spend a whole lot of time in front of the TV, so I’m sure you may be able to come up with one I’ve missed. I think different qualities are important to admire in people, regardless of race.

Nathaniel might work. I don’t love the nns. Something to consider. Thanks for the suggestion!

Edit: I probably would call the excessive production of Marvel a waste too… one was great. Three were pretty good… are we on number 40 something by now? Tooooooo much.

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] you think [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] could be an idea good luck with your naming search

I would also say Pulp Fiction & [name_m]Django[/name_m] Unchained are legendary films but hey just difference of opinion

I don’t think [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] + [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] are at the level of [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_u]Jordan[/name_u], especially if you call him [name_u]Sam[/name_u]. But I’d consider how you’ll handle people asking or silently assuming that you named your son after the actor. Are you fine saying ā€œno, we just love the name Samuelā€? [name_u]Or[/name_u] will that bother you? If it bothers you, I’d look for another name you love.

[name_m]Samwise[/name_m] would be another option, if you don’t mind a (great) [name_m]Tolkien[/name_m] reference.

I love tolkien. Great idea!

I don’t mind clarifying that i don’t like the actor. It will give an opportunity to explain why we liked the name enough to choose it anyway!

@danilib

… except [name_m]Samwise[/name_m] according to [name_m]Tolkien[/name_m] means ā€œhalf-witā€ haha

No way! :woman_facepalming:t2::laughing: Still a great literary figure to honor though.

If you are in it for [name_u]Sam[/name_u], why not any of the [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] alternatives ? (Eg [name_m]Samson[/name_m] / Sampson).

[name_u]Or[/name_u], what about just [name_u]Sam[/name_u]?

I agree with this, but I knew a kid named Denzel Washington… anything works, I suppose!

My last name is Jackson and I don’t like the repetition of the final syllable. Otherwise, great idea! Samuel historically was a way nicer dude than Samson also, but I can find ways to appreciate them both.

Know any masculine names that contain or end in ā€œsam?ā€ My first thought was the the sea witch’s eel, Jetsam lol

Edit: I just took a look and there are lots of Japanese and Indian names, both of which I am not. I thought of these though…
Balsamic. Salad has been truly amazing this pregnancy!
Assam. I like tea.
Samurai. Husband would love that!

Thanks for coming up with that list. It’s definitely confirmation that [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] is the best option if we go that direction!

I would probably avoid using the name if you don’t want comments from people about the association. That said, most people (myself included!) love him so it’s a good association.

I might not think of the actor at first if meeting a Samuel Jackson, no L; pretty sure I wouldn’t if it was Sam Jackson. It might occur to me later.

I do know a young Sam who’s just Sam, full name.

I would totally use Samwise in the middle  but that’s not what you’re looking for…and surely Jeremiah is the easy choice there? I like Jedidiah too. My husband really likes it, it’s been on our shortlist.

Also, just throwing out there that I was trying to sell my mom on the name Seamus and came up with nn Sam. Admittedly even my best namenerd friend thought it was too much of a stretch, but I thought it was clever.

Oh i love [name_m]Seamus[/name_m], nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u]! It’s a fantastic idea. I appreciate stretchy nns though.

Jehosaphat was another, but not much loved. I think i might ditch the syllable issue and stick with j name.

I think [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] ā€œ [name_u]Sam[/name_u] ā€œ 100% works!
