We’ve decided to name our baby [name_u]Delaney[/name_u]. But it just so happens that we have a close relative called [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think these names are too similar? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think of one name when you hear the other? [name_m]Will[/name_m] it be assumed that our baby is named after this relative, which she is not?!
Thanks for your input!
The are close, but not too close. I don’t think about [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] when hearing [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] and vice versa, so I think it’s fine.
I agree with pp. They I wouldn’t think of one name when I heard the other so I think it would probably be ok.
I don’t think they are close enough for anyone to think that.
Ok thanks so much!!!
I wouldn’t assume that [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] was named after [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], despite the similarity I have never connected the two in my head. However, does your family assume you will/really want you to name this baby after a relative? If so there is a chance that [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] could be seen as honoring [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], but if you don’t say she’s named after [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] I doubt people would assume she was.
I think some people [name_m]WILL[/name_m] assume… my cousin named her baby “[name_u]Brady[/name_u] [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m].” Her dad’s name is [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m]. People always make comments like “oh, that’s so sweet- he’s named for his grandpa.” She is very matter-of-fact and says, “no, he’s named for my husband, who’s name is ‘[name_u]Ryan[/name_u] [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m].’”
It’s no big deal if you don’t mind either correcting people or letting them make false assumptions. To me it would depend on my relationship with the “[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]” or “[name_m]Mitchell[/name_m]…” If I were feuding or they just rubbed me the wrong way, I’d steer clear of “[name_u]Delaney[/name_u]” or “[name_u]Brady[/name_u] [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m]” for my baby. My cousin is close to her parents so it’s NBD for her.
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u] is very pretty!
They have similar sounds, but I wouldn’t assume you chose it because you know someone named [name_f]Elaine[/name_f].
