Nymphadora?

So we’re expecting a girl and we’ve chosen [name]Audrey[/name] for the first name. Going through middle name ideas the suggestion of Nymphadora came up. I happen to be a fan of [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] and I think it would be a really cute middle name. So I actually really like it but I’m just not sure if it would be okay to use. What are your opinions on Nymphadora?

In all honesty, and I say this as a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] fan, I dislike it. I’m all for choosing an HP-inspired name, but Nymphadora is very over-the-top, makes think of the word nymphet (something I wouldn’t want for a younger girl), and plus, Tonks hated her name.
I think [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Ginevra[/name] is lovely, though, as HP main characters go. I’d also consider [name]Fleur[/name], [name]Luna[/name], or [name]Minerva[/name].

In the middle, I think it’s alright, definitely an odd choice though. [name]Remember[/name], Tonks didn’t like her name either, so I would probably go with a more “common” harry potter name like [name]Ginevra[/name] or [name]Hermione[/name].

Sorry, but it is over the top imo and sounds like someone who adores nymphomaniacs.

[name]Audrey[/name] is lovely but as a fellow [name]Potter[/name] fan I think you can do so much better than Nymphadora! Some other ideas from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]:

[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Wilhelmina[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Fleur[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Cassiopeia[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Apolline[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Luna[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Lavender[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Rowena[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Helena[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Hepzibah[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Sybil[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Celestina[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Bellatrix[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] Alecto
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Pomona[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Myrtle[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Muriel[/name]

Nymphomaniac? Not good.

Tonks hated it, and I have a feeling that any other woman would too.

I’d say no on Nymphadora as well. Someone mentioned [name]Fleur[/name], [name]Luna[/name], and [name]Minerva[/name] as possibilities though, and I think all of those would be great middles for [name]Audrey[/name].

This name is just not OK. I’ve never read those books, and while plenty of adults that I know have, plenty never did. This name just makes me think of sex addiction.

Ditto this. I’ve never read/seen [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] and I would totally miss the reference.

Personally–and I know I’m in the minority here–I think it’s pretty badass

Also–it appears to mean “gift of the Nymphs.”

That’s one of the reasons I love it. When I think of Nymphadora I don’t even think of nymphomaniac I think of Nymphs but apparently most people think of nymphomaniac which is a little saddening. Obviously though I can’t control what people think when they hear it and I don’t want them to judge her or us as parents when they hear it. Still keeping it on the table though. Thank you for the opinions and the other suggestions.

Sorry, but Nymphadora would be a very unwise choice for a human child. I think it sounds and looks very pretty and would totally use it on a cat or something, but the nymphomaniac thing is way too terrible and obvious of a connection to saddle on a real human…

I remember really liking several names from [name]Sirius[/name] [name]Black[/name]'s family tree, I think there was an Elladora and an [name]Araminta[/name]? [name]Both[/name] are beautiful and have that magical sound like Nymphadora. Not that the [name]Black[/name] family tree is the greatest list of namesakes, but the names are great and very [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]-y.

[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Minerva[/name] would be lovely, too. Professor McGonagall’s a fantastic character!

I think that your daughter would probably be embarrassed when telling people what her middle name is when she gets older. That would be my main deterrent from using the name.

I am going to vote with No on this one. I literally hear Nympho from that or think of a nymphomaniac.

Ditto.

I had no idea where you’d got that name from. Now that I do know, it doesn’t help. The associations are terrible, and if my middle name was Nymphadora, I’d never tell anyone. Sorry.

I understand what you’re getting at, and while I think it’s a beautiful name, I think (and it’s been proven here) that a lot of people will think nymphomaniac. There’s also the thing that’s been mentioned that Tonks didn’t like her own name…

If the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] reference isn’t the most important thing to you I will suggest one of my favourites, Musidora. It means gift of the muses which I think is adorable. And it’s still got [name]Dora[/name], so it kind of relates to Tonks…?

Or [name]Theodora[/name], which combies Nymphadora and Tonk’s sons name.

Personally, I like it but I can think aside obvious associations in general though not everyone can. I love the suggestions of Musidora and [name]Theodora[/name], how do you feel about [name]Isidora[/name] then?
