I love Ocean for a boy. It’s a total guilty pleasure name for me. Thoughts on this name? Too “out there”?
I do think it’s possibly too much beside siblings, as we have always gone a more traditional route
I adore [name_m]Ocean[/name_m]! I don’t think it’s too out there, I know people with more unusual word names who’ve had no issues with them. The sound is on-trend, with the cool O beginning similar to [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Orion[/name_m], [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_m]Otto[/name_m], etc., and the -an ending is also very on-trend for boys! So even if it’s pretty unexpected, all the sounds are fashionable and familiar. I don’t think an [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] would struggle at all with his name!
As for the sibset, I get what you mean. I definitely would be surprised to hear that a [name_m]Liam[/name_m] had a sibling named [name_m]Ocean[/name_m]. That said, I don’t think it’s unusable! Would it raise a few eyebrows? Yes, most likely. But it’s not unheard of to have sibling sets where the older siblings have names in a different style from the younger ones, as the parents change and their taste in names changes too! [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] feels like a natural sibling name to [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] - definitely safer, like the other siblings’ names, but a bit more on-trend than classic, so [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] wouldn’t feel like a crazy name to follow it up with. And although [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] is much more out there, it’s pretty similar to the other names in terms of sound! Again, on-trend, but also short. It’s less of a shock than if you had a [name_m]Ben[/name_m], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] & [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], the way [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] sounds makes more “sense” with their names than some other unique word names! So yes, it’d be surprising and not the greatest stylistic match, but I don’t think it’d be so jarring that you shouldn’t use the name if it’s the one you love the most.
I think it’s certainly usable! It’s in the top 1000 for both boys and girls in the US, and I can see it as an alternative to other more popular water names like [name_m]River[/name_m] and [name_f]Brooke[/name_f] / [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] in time. I’d say it is quite different from your other children and would be a surprising choice, but not necessarily unusable. I’d probably opt to put it in the middle name spot, personally.
No, it’s very on brand right now.
Oh, with more traditional sibs, maybe I would say don’t. But it could still fly for a middle!
Absolutely love [name_m]Ocean[/name_m]
I think [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] could be surprising with more traditional sibling names but I wouldn’t be surprised to encounter an [name_m]Ocean[/name_m]. The name reminds me of [name_m]River[/name_m] + [name_m]Cove[/name_m], also wouldn’t let traditionally named siblings set me back from using a more bohemian nature name. I actually really like eclectic sibling sets! But maybe using [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] in the middle slot would work. I met a Lou1s [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] the other day which I thought was lush
[name_m]Ocean[/name_m] is charming - it’s got this grand, powerful feel, but also a sense of gentleness and calm. It it bold, but it sounds enough like [name_m]Owen[/name_m], [name_m]Rowan[/name_m], [name_m]Sean[/name_m] etc, that it doesn’t feel too outlandish
[name_m]Ocean[/name_m] is a great name! [name_m]Powerful[/name_m] and unforgettable.
I don’t think it is “too out there”. I believe it fits perfectly into the current naming trends (word and nature themed names).
I like [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] a lot! I don’t think I’d use it as a first, but depending on the surname, I might use it as a middle!
[name_f]My[/name_f] sister loved it for her first, but she has a very literal word name that made [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] sort of ridiculous. Still love the idea in general though, and love it as a middle name. I also like [name_m]Oceanus[/name_m] a lot (and maybe Oceane/Oceana but I prefer the masculine versions).
I saw it on a little boy a few years ago and it fits him perfectly
