I came across [name_f]Odile[/name_f] a few months back and I have been absolutely enthralled ever since. [name_f]Odile[/name_f] is the black swan maiden and the secondary antagonist in [name_m]Pyotr[/name_m] Ilyich Tchaikovskyâs [name_u]Swan[/name_u] [name_u]Lake[/name_u]. Her opposite is [name_f]Odette[/name_f], the white swan maiden, who is the heroine of the ballet while [name_f]Odile[/name_f] is the antagonist. In some productions, [name_f]Odile[/name_f] is known as the [name_m]Black[/name_m] [name_u]Swan[/name_u].
Although many would prefer [name_f]Odette[/name_f] to her, I am certain, and I find [name_f]Odette[/name_f] to be charming too, but [name_f]Odile[/name_f] is a sparkling gem. She is brilliant. According to Llewellynâs Complete Book of Names, there were two saints of the name â both patronesses of good eyesight. Nameberry describes it as âsensuousâ & âsinuousâ so am doubting itâs usability as a name and most probably wouldnât use it.
Nonetheless, what are your opinions on [name_f]Odile[/name_f]? Is there a particular picture painted in your mind when you think of her? Also, get creative and come up with some combos involving [name_f]Odile[/name_f], both as a first name and middle name! I am awaiting your responses. Thank you.
Odile is intriguing. Personally I dont really like the black swan association. (But I am a ballet teacher and also grew up with the swan princess movie where Odile is not portrayed favorably, so maybe have a stronger association with it than others) But as a combo I would choose something equally as feminissa ballerina though maybe a little softer in sound likeâŚ
I want to like it, but I am completely incapable of separating the name from the [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] depiction of the character which is⌠less than flattering. I donât really see why it couldnât be usable for other people, though. It also reminds me of crocodile, which is kind of cool? Iâd maybe lean more towards using it for a middle.

I honestly donât see her as âsensuous and sinuousâ at all - and I donât see how someone else would. [name_f]Odile[/name_f] is beautiful, elegant, and chic. She fits right in with other fashionable [name_u]French[/name_u] choices like [name_f]Odette[/name_f], Ottillie and [name_f]OphĂŠlie[/name_f]! The [name_m]Black[/name_m] [name_u]Swan[/name_u] association isnât a big deal imo.
Intriguing and kind of darkly magical. I know nothing about the ballet so I canât comment on that association, but my pause would be that where I am, it would sound similar to the word âordealâ?
I like [name_f]Odile[/name_f]. The sound, the very floaty feel. The [name_u]Swan[/name_u] [name_u]Lake[/name_u] villain, if you will, is my first and only association; even having never seen the ballet, I know [name_f]Odile[/name_f] to be a dark name. So, the picture painted in my mind when I think of her is, indeed, a black swan. Sheâs so prettyâbut sheâs definitely dark!
I prefer [name_f]Odile[/name_f] to [name_f]Odette[/name_f]. I like the darkly magical black swan thing. Also really like [name_f]Odele[/name_f], a sort of half-way house between the two. [name_f]Odette[/name_f] looks very pretty but I just hear oh debt.
