Of Knights and Heroes... and the Rest of the Gang

I’ve been very medieval lately. Re-watched Camelot, reading The Once and [name]Future[/name] [name]King[/name] and wearing heavy jewellery and velvet and embroidered stuff. Anyway, I’m always thinking about names, and I decided to make a knightly list; not about [name]Keira[/name], no, about knights! Knightly, chivalrous, romantic, dashing, handsome, fantastic names. And I would love your contribution. This is partly research for future little brother (and a sister thread will pop up in the girl section at some point) but also just because it’s fun, and I thought it could be fun for someone else, as well as inspiring and maybe helpful?
So what names makes you think of knight, heroes, hunters, warriors with good intentions?

Inspirational links: one - two - three - four - five - six - seven - eight - nine - ten

My list already consists of:

edit: added amazingly suggested named on page 2, post #12

Great list. I’ve been watching Vikings. And you may want to add [name]Ragnar[/name] to your list.

I [name]ADORE[/name] [name]Emrys[/name], but couldn’t see using it. I like [name]Gavin[/name] as well, and [name]Roderick[/name]. [name]Gareth[/name] is nice. I like [name]Lionell[/name], but I think thats mostly in part because of [name]Lex[/name]'s dad on Smallville. [name]Oliver[/name] is nice too but it just makes me think of the [name]Green[/name] [name]Arrow[/name].

A few magic favourites and a load of GPs which have a mediaeval feel to me:

[name]Alwyn[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], Bawden, Connoc, Digory, [name]Edmund[/name], Enoder, [name]Fabian[/name], [name]Gawen[/name], [name]Gilbert[/name], Grenfell, [name]Griffith[/name], Guenedoc, [name]Hector[/name], Hender, [name]Ignatius[/name], Jacca, [name]Julian[/name], [name]Kea[/name], Locryn, [name]Ludo[/name], [name]Magnus[/name], [name]Morgan[/name], [name]Pasco[/name], Perran, [name]Peter[/name], Petherick, [name]Ralph[/name], Ruan, Saundry, [name]Talan[/name], [name]Tristan[/name], Udy, Yestin

I’m afraid I’m not very imaginative–I keep coming back to knightly stories I love!

[name]Oliver[/name] (inspired by [name]Arrow[/name], apparently)
[name]Peter[/name] (inspired both by the Chronicles of [name]Narnia[/name] and The Hunger Games–despite the grotesque backdrop to the story, and its juvenile appeal, Peeta seems like such a good, knightly sort of soul)
[name]Edmund[/name] (again, inspired by [name]Narnia[/name]!)
[name]Caspian[/name] ([name]Narnia[/name]. Again!)
[name]Shasta[/name] (again, another Narnian name! It may not be so usable on a boy–I’ve heard it’s technically a girls’ name somewhere?–but after The Horse and His Boy I can’t really see it on a girl. I think it’d be a pretty cool MN…)
[name]Tristan[/name] ([name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Isolde[/name])
[name]Graham[/name] (OUAT! I’m no longer into the show, but I used to love it, and I loved [name]Graham[/name])
D’Artagnan (I’m currently reading The Three Musketeers. :))
[name]Aramis[/name]
[name]Edward[/name] (meh, I don’t know where this came from, but I got the BBC miniseries of Sense and Sensibility for my birthday last month, and [name]Edward[/name] [name]Ferrars[/name] has such a knightly soul! He was the only real non-warrior that seemed to carry this image for me. :))

And I’m pretty much stumped from there on. Obviously I’m not quite as imaginative when it comes to names as you, I just think of all the literature I adore so much. At least some of the ideas weren’t repeats!

I also love your idea of [name]Leopold[/name]! I adore it.

Hmmm. You are infinitely more imaginative than me but this is fun so here I go!!!

[name]Audric[/name]
Aylwin
[name]Byram[/name]
[name]Leland[/name]
[name]Roldan[/name]
Ulmer
Merek
[name]Gareth[/name]

Hmm. If I think of more I’ll be back.

Love a lot of these names! Surprised Arthur isn’t on the list :O. I love Paladin–I’m going to have to add that to my list!! I didn’t think it was a name, but it’s so cool because of the class from MapleStory is B.A ;).

Sorry for any repeats!

Awesome list once again! [name]Emrys[/name] is of course my favorite

What do you know about the name Calidore? I know it has some literary uses, but do you know if there is actually any history of it as an actual real world name at some point? And do you know what it means? I’m curious, I really like the sound of it a lot a lot, but I can’t find much information about it online (aside from it’s use in The Faerie Queene).

Here are some others that maybe aren’t specifically ‘medieval/knightly’ (I don’t know), but give me that general impression (sorry for any repeats).

[name]Anatole[/name]
[name]Aldrich[/name]/[name]Aldric[/name]
Aidric
[name]Adalius[/name]
[name]Caledon[/name]
[name]Cadoc[/name]
Castiel
[name]Clement[/name]
[name]Dacian[/name]
[name]Emmerich[/name]
[name]Edric[/name]
[name]Halston[/name]
[name]Leif[/name]
[name]Oberon[/name]
[name]Theron[/name]
[name]Theon[/name]
[name]Tavish[/name]

Nothing to add (sorry, don’t know many unusual names compared to most Berries!) but wanted to say how much I’m loving this thread! So many names I haven’t heard of before. I particularly like Calidore, Roscelin and [name]Fiorello[/name]. Thanks everyone and especially [name]Ottilie[/name] for starting it!

Most the names I wanted to add have already been suggested so my list is quite short.

[name]Hugh[/name], [name]Giffard[/name], [name]Esdras[/name], [name]Douglas[/name], [name]Jac[/name] and [name]Conrad[/name] all have this feel to me.

Oooh, great suggestions guys!

Ninanoo, [name]Ragnar[/name] is going on the list! You’re right it’s got something. And it was my grandfather’s name so bonus points for that.

C&P1: Whoa, love those! Can’t believe I forgot about [name]Arthur[/name]! I love Bawden, Connoc, [name]Edmund[/name], Enoder, [name]Gawen[/name], Grenfell (!), Guenedoc, Hender, [name]Julian[/name], [name]Magnus[/name], [name]Morgan[/name], Perran, Petheric, [name]Ralph[/name], Saundry, [name]Talan[/name] and Yestin.

[name]Ash[/name], [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Shasta[/name], [name]Graham[/name] and [name]Ferrars[/name] are on the list now. Great suggestions! And mine are mainly from literature too, don’t you worry…

DindleDina, [name]Audric[/name], Beyram, Ulmer and Merek are great! Thank you!

Teagardens, yeah, I forgot about [name]Artie[/name]… pretty silly, huh? I don’t think [name]Paladin[/name] is really a name, the Paladins were the peers of Charlemagne. Which makes it feel knightly to me… and it sounds cool! I love: Leofric, [name]Amaury[/name], [name]Constantine[/name], [name]Marcus[/name], [name]Henrik[/name], [name]Ambrose[/name], [name]Mordecai[/name], [name]Evander[/name], [name]Finnegan[/name] and [name]Evander[/name] the most. But so many great ones! Thanks.

ElizabethRose, thank you! I love Yaromir, [name]Vladimir[/name], [name]Theseus[/name], Loxley, [name]Desmond[/name] and [name]Roman[/name] very much.

Javad, I don’t know a lot about Calidore, but from what I’ve heard it’s made out of the Greek words kalus (beautiful) and doron (gifts). So beautiful gifts. He is the knight of courtesy, one of my favourites. I really like it too, as a middle name. I love [name]Anatole[/name] (so cool and masculine!), Castiel, [name]Caledon[/name], Oberson, [name]Theron[/name], [name]Tavish[/name]. I want to like [name]Emmerich[/name], but a recent literary experience has put me off this name.

Bonfire, glad you like it! I thought it could be fun…

[name]Nellie[/name], ooh, [name]Conrad[/name] and [name]Douglas[/name] are very good ones. And [name]Hugh[/name] as well.

Thanks everyone, more suggestions are welcome!

Eep, sorry for repeats! I looked at this thread on my phone and tried to search and then when I finally got on a computer I forgot to check again.

Wow what a list. I can’t think of anything to add at the moment. Too overwhelmed by it’s shear length but I’ll be back if I think of something.

Wait did someone mention Siegfried?

I love this thread. Can’t think of anything to add though :frowning:

I just remembered Valemon from The Polar [name]Bear[/name] [name]King[/name], if anyone has seen that/ read the myth.

You’re all fantastic!

tfzolghadr, I really like Rostam, Dastan, Mahyar, Nariman & [name]Piran[/name]. Thanks!

Cygnus, so many good ones! Faramir, [name]Ilya[/name], Bedivere, Dobrynya, [name]Alfred[/name] and Aragorn! Wonderful. And how cool is Beowulf? Swoon!!! Also, thank you thank you thank you for mentioning Valemon. It’s a very dear folktale for me, it being Norwegian and all. [name]Just[/name] a beautiful story and a beautiful name.

[name]Lex[/name], [name]Siegfried[/name], so cool! Thanks!

I will add them to the list later.

This thread is excellent! I really like [name]Emrys[/name], [name]Edric[/name], [name]Oberon[/name] and [name]Gawain[/name]. Have Elyan, [name]Leander[/name] and Pellinore been suggested yet?

Didn’t see these:
[name]Alaric[/name]
[name]Osric[/name]
Gethin

[name]Love[/name] this list! I am about to become a grandma for the first time, but have been “name-obsessed” since age 10 – and especially with “knightly” strong-but-romantic names. My son is named [name]Tristan[/name] (and I gave him that name several years before “Legends of the Fall” when no one was using that name for baby boys  . . . and now he and his wife are expecting a baby boy. They were not crazy about three of my name suggestions – [name]Talon[/name], [name]Alaric[/name], and [name]Loic[/name] – but do like [name]Maro[/name] and [name]Marin[/name]. In fact, they are now pretty committed to “[name]Marin[/name].” (There was a lesser-known knight of the Round Table named [name]Marin[/name]; he was given the [name]Red[/name] City and eventually killed during the fighting surrounding the rescue of [name]Guinevere[/name] from burning at the stake. There’s also a children’s book about a little boy named [name]Marin[/name] who saves his town by dealing with a golden dragon.) Anyway, as much as I personally think “[name]Marin[/name]” has that same strong-romantic-heroic sound as “[name]Tristan[/name],” my concern is that, although “[name]Marin[/name]” is very much considered solely a male name in [name]France[/name], Croatia, and Romania, it seems to be yet another name Americans are insisting on using for girls. (Why do people keep doing that??) [name]Do[/name] you think it would be ok for my son to name his son [name]Marin[/name]?
