Offbeat Greek Girl Names: WDYT?

Are any of these wearable? Are any of them cringe-worthy? I love the new search on Nameberry & I found some new gems to run by everyone for an opinion! I included their brief meanings:

[name]Ereni[/name] - peace
[name]Rheya[/name] - flowing stream
[name]Neola[/name] - young one
[name]Galen[/name] - calm, healer
[name]Asta[/name] - star-like
[name]Neoma[/name] - new moon
[name]Bronte[/name] - thunder
[name]Melora[/name] - golden apple
[name]Aminta[/name] - defender
[name]Effie[/name] - pleasant voice
[name]Ursa[/name] - little bear
[name]Toula[/name] - light
[name]Cinda[/name] - of the moon
[name]Elidi[/name] - gift of the sun
[name]Theora[/name] - thinker or watcher
[name]Pasha[/name] - of the ocean
[name]Nidia[/name] - has sweatness and grace

Which ones do you love/like/hate?

Well, my favorites are [name]Ereni[/name], [name]Melora[/name], [name]Cinda[/name], [name]Elidi[/name], and [name]Pasha[/name]. :]

See, I like some Greek names that are much more offbeat than these, so these seem pretty tame to me. I think they’re all usable, but I don’t like [name]Galen[/name] for a girl. i’ve always though it sounded masculine.

The ones I love the most are [name]Eleni[/name], [name]Rheya[/name], [name]Ursa[/name], [name]Nidia[/name], and [name]Cinda[/name]

i like [name]Aminta[/name], [name]Melora[/name], [name]Pasha[/name], [name]Theora[/name], [name]Elidi[/name], [name]Toula[/name]

And not my style are [name]Neola[/name], [name]Galen[/name], [name]Asta[/name], [name]Neoma[/name], [name]Bronte[/name], [name]Effie[/name] (too nicknamey)

You might also like [name]Eirene[/name] (ee-ree-nee) or [name]Irene[/name] is the Anglicized form. You might like [name]Thalia[/name] ([name]THAY[/name]-lee-uh in Greek, THUH-lee-uh or THOLL-ee-uh are ways I’ve heard it pronounced in English).

If you want some more Greek names, feel free to ask. All things Greek are my specialty

I like Erini and it feels wearable because of [name]Erin[/name].
[name]Asta[/name] I would like but it almost sounds like you’re trying to be gangster and saying [name]Aster[/name].
[name]Bronte[/name] is a great one, but you’d half to like the three literature related sisters to get away with using it.
[name]Effie[/name]'s sorta cute but it sounds kind of like eff-ie as in a bleeped version of the f-word.
[name]Theora[/name]'s nice, I like how it has ties to the modern [name]Theodora[/name] without sounding so hard.
[name]Pasha[/name]'s cute, too!

I don’t like [name]Melora[/name], [name]Rheya[/name] (but that one’s preferance) , [name]Elidi[/name] or [name]Cinda[/name].

Haha, it’s funny: I live in Thessaloniki right now, working at a middle/high school, and these aren’t the names most girls wear. I do like [name]Eleni[/name], [name]Melora[/name], [name]Aminta[/name], and [name]Toula[/name]. [name]Galen[/name] and [name]Pascha[/name] both sound masculine to me.

Around here, I hear lots of [name]Eleni[/name] (way popular over here), Panagiota (Giota), Despina/Despoina, [name]Anastasia[/name], Katerini, [name]Irini[/name], [name]Nicoletta[/name] and all things [name]Nikki[/name], [name]Maria[/name] (heaps! [name]Maria[/name]-[name]Eleni[/name], [name]Maria[/name]-Paraskevi, etc.), [name]Angeliki[/name], Paraskevi, Afroditi, [name]Sofia[/name], [name]Georgia[/name] (also lots), [name]Alexandra[/name], [name]Danai[/name], [name]Magda[/name], and [name]Evangelia[/name]. In the singing club I run, we’ve got a [name]Vera[/name], a [name]Marianna[/name], a [name]Marilou[/name], a [name]Nazaret[/name], and a [name]Lia[/name], too.

I like a lot if these but my uncles name is galen so I can’t picture it in a girl. [name]Theora[/name] is probably my fav from your list but [name]Athenais[/name] is my absolute favorite Greek name followed by calixte

[name]Ereni[/name] - peace: I don’t care for the sound of this one. It’s too runny or renal (as in kidneys).

[name]Rheya[/name] - flowing stream: This is pretty, it would wear well too.

[name]Neola[/name] - young one: I want to like this, it’s intriguing, but I can’t quite get behind it.

[name]Galen[/name] - calm, healer: sounds like a boy name.

[name]Asta[/name] - star-like: This is probably asking for crude teasing.

[name]Neoma[/name] - new moon: very similar to [name]Naomi[/name]? I kind of like it.

[name]Bronte[/name] - thunder: I’ve seen this one around Nameberry a LOT as a literary reference. It’s not my style but plenty of people seem to like it.

[name]Melora[/name] - golden apple: I can see this one being used. I don’t know whether I like it or not.

[name]Aminta[/name] - defender: I’ve seen this one around Nameberry a bit too, it’s starting to grow on me a little.

[name]Effie[/name] - pleasant voice: I’m afraid of “f-ing” references with this.

[name]Ursa[/name] - little bear: Not my style but cute and probably wearable. Seems a little foreign.

[name]Toula[/name] - light: This is cute. I mean really cute.

[name]Cinda[/name] - of the moon: Pretty, cool meaning, more updated than [name]Cindy[/name], though I am afraid people would connect it with [name]Cinderella[/name]

[name]Elidi[/name] - gift of the sun: This one seems wearable even though I wouldn’t use it.

[name]Theora[/name] - thinker or watcher: I like it as a feminine of [name]Theodore[/name], but it might lean too close to “theorem.”

[name]Pasha[/name] - of the ocean: appealing but sounds too much like passion to me.

[name]Nidia[/name] - has sweatness and grace: I like this. I wonder if she would be teased with “idiot” though.

Like-
[name]Ereni[/name]
[name]Melora[/name]
[name]Pasha[/name]
[name]Effie[/name]
[name]Cinda[/name]
[name]Theora[/name]

These are just ok in my opinion-
[name]Rheya[/name]
[name]Neola[/name]
[name]Asta[/name]
[name]Neoma[/name]
[name]Aminta[/name]
[name]Ursa[/name]
[name]Toula[/name]
[name]Elidi[/name]
[name]Nidia[/name]

Hate- These sound like boy names to me…
[name]Galen[/name]
[name]Bronte[/name]

I really like [name]Theora[/name]!

The only ones I like are [name]Neola[/name], [name]Melora[/name], and [name]Theora[/name].
I have a male cousin named [name]Galen[/name], so I can’t imagine that name on a girl.

Wow, what great feedback! I live in small-town [name]America[/name] & my SO’s family is Greek and I want to use a name that is Greek but that is most definatly “ours” because there are already many family members named [name]Nicholas[/name], etc. I know there are more osbcure names but I want something that is different but not made-up or difficult to pronounce. The meaning is really important to me. I liked the name [name]Lamia[/name]… until I looked it up!! Some of these give me a nickname feel, too, while others seem more appropriate as a middle but they all seemed to strike the same cord of “different but not too unusual”. Maybe I could get away with using [name]Pasha[/name] as a nn for [name]Patricia[/name] (a family name for both of us), or [name]Effie[/name] as a nn for … something. I’m also feeling like [name]Galen[/name] is too masculine or not feminine enough or something. I’m over [name]Galen[/name]. I also see the issue with [name]Asta[/name] and removing that one. Our last name starts with G and it just says “Ass-tag” to me now. I love the feedback and I appreciate any suggestions

Most of them are too out-there for me, but I do like [name]Ereni[/name] (mainly because it reminds me of my beloved [name]Eleni[/name]!) and [name]Melora[/name] (although I prefer [name]Elora[/name]). I really like [name]Bronte[/name], too, but probably wouldn’t use it as a FN. It strikes me as more literary than Greek…

[name]Ereni[/name] - peace - see, I kind of disagree with pp, [name]Erin[/name] makes it less wearable in some ways because I think that is what people will hear! I know people that have a little [name]Eleni[/name], I think that may be preferable.

[name]Rheya[/name] - flowing stream - I think it’s pretty and very wearable, spelling will be the one challenge sometimes.

[name]Neola[/name] - young one - feels a little old/clunky to me, but I still really like it. [name]Nola[/name] is getting increasing love, so I can see this fitting in with that while still standing out.

[name]Galen[/name] - calm, healer - I like this more on a girl than a boy, despite that, it still seems kind of masculine since the historic figure was male.

[name]Asta[/name] - star-like - I agree, too much teasting.

[name]Neoma[/name] - new moon - I love moon names, and this is nice, but also kind of clunky [name]Neola[/name]. This one also sounds a little medical, so I’d stick to [name]Neola[/name] between the two.

[name]Bronte[/name] - thunder - every time I hear this I think brontosaurus : ( …

[name]Melora[/name] - golden apple - like it, think it’s wearable
[name]Aminta[/name] - defender - like it, think it’s somewhat wearable
[name]Effie[/name] - pleasant voice - like it, but too nicknamey. It’s probably short for [name]Euphemia[/name], which is too much name.
[name]Ursa[/name] - little bear - I think this is actually Latin? Not that wearable anyway, [name]Ursula[/name] and all that…
[name]Toula[/name] - light - I like it. It’s the name of the character in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, although I don’t think most people would get that.
[name]Cinda[/name] - of the moon - I like it, although I think people may assume she’s [name]Cynthia[/name] or [name]Lucinda[/name]
[name]Elidi[/name] - gift of the sun - I can’t make up my mind on this one, but I’m not sure what to make of that etymology…Dor is usually the gift element in Greek, and Hel-/[name]Helio[/name]-the sun, so I’d think Heliodora. Maybe [name]Elidi[/name] actually is a derivative of that, that would make some sense.
[name]Theora[/name] - thinker or watcher - I like this
[name]Pasha[/name] - of the ocean - I like it, but it feels more Russian than Greek
[name]Nidia[/name] - has sweatness and grace - too close to [name]Nadia[/name]…

What about…
[name]Eulalia[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Dorothy[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Athena[/name]
[name]Althea[/name]

Good luck!

[name]Neoma[/name] - new moon
[name]Bronte[/name] - not sure
[name]Melora[/name] - This is one of my faves!!! I love this name it’s on my list
[name]Aminta[/name] - i like it knowing what it means beside [name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Effie[/name] - sounds more like a nm
[name]Ursa[/name] - i like the unusual name
[name]Toula[/name] - not sure
[name]Cinda[/name] - I love it its sounds sultry like a mystery

I like:
[name]Neola[/name]
[name]Neoma[/name]
[name]Melora[/name]
[name]Aminta[/name]
[name]Elidi[/name]
[name]Nidia[/name]

Another name that I like, which is Greek, is [name]Isaura[/name]. Thought you may like it as well.

Oooooh! [name]Isaura[/name]! It sounds so soft and pretty. I’ve never heard this one before and I like it! I’ll run it by the SO! [name]Do[/name] you say it like Iz-ar-ah, or Is-aw-rah, or something else…? [name]Eulalia[/name] & [name]Eulalie[/name] were on my original list but the SO nixed them, said they “sounded gross” to him :(. I also like [name]Phoebe[/name] but I have a beloved dog named [name]Bebe[/name]. [name]Penelope[/name] is one of my SO’s favorite names but I’m hesitent to use something growing in popularity so quickly. I love all the nn options for [name]Penelope[/name] and I saw on nameberry the obscure spelling of [name]Pinelopi[/name] but I know that doesn’t change the original name’s issues; only adds a spelling confusion. [name]Dorothy[/name], [name]Athena[/name], & [name]Althea[/name] don’t resonate with me for some reason. I love them but they aren’t MY baby name, you know? Thanks for all the feedback & suggestions!

I like many Greek names. The ones that feel most usable and original from your list are…
[name]Ereni[/name]
[name]Rheya[/name]
[name]Neoma[/name]
[name]Melora[/name] (this might be my favorite, so soft, pretty, and yet not overly complex as a name)
[name]Toula[/name]
[name]Theora[/name]

these seem masculine to me:
[name]Galen[/name]
[name]Bronte[/name]
[name]Pasha[/name] (because it is a nn for Russian boy’s name [name]Pavel[/name])

the rest seem too close to another name, like [name]Cinda[/name]/[name]Cindy[/name] and [name]Nidia[/name]/[name]Nadia[/name], or just a bit off so that they would be confusing for a US setting.

I just came across an 8-year old girl named [name]Eleni[/name] and wanted to add a few more ideas to your list…
[name]Acacia[/name]
[name]Calla[/name]
[name]Celina[/name]
[name]Cleo[/name]
[name]Jacinta[/name]
[name]Karina[/name]
[name]Lidia[/name]
[name]Markita[/name]
[name]Xanthe[/name]
[name]Zana[/name]

I believe it’s Is-aw-rah. I love it as well.

Sorry if there are any repeats but I like the following names, however they dont all have great stories to go with them

[name]Isaure[/name] (getting really popular in [name]France[/name] but would work here - you could set a trend!)
Angélique (means like the angels)
[name]Apolline[/name]
[name]Art[/name]émie and [name]Art[/name]émis
Bérénice
Briséis - I think this looks/sounds sort of trendy which makes it less appealing
[name]Gal[/name]éné, [name]Gal[/name]ène - female variants of [name]Galen[/name] if you still like the name
Hélène - would easily work in the states!
Eudoxie
[name]Eurydice[/name] (love this!)
Zénaïs (Zeh nay EES)
Thália
Théodosie
[name]Isidore[/name] (but I think this is considered masculine too?)
Ismène
[name]Corrine[/name] - lovely would be easy to use!
[name]Roxane[/name]
[name]Sabine[/name]
[name]Jacinthe[/name]
Phèdre
[name]Phoebe[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this! Its nms but I would love to see it used!
