Help my husband and I find a compromise! We are pregnant now.
We both like rather offbeat names, and we have a couple ideas for if we end up with a girl, but we are having trouble agreeing on names for a boy.
I like Nature kinds of names (think [name]Fox[/name], [name]Sage[/name], [name]Arrow[/name], [name]Hawthorn[/name], [name]Archer[/name], [name]Yarrow[/name] etc.)
& my husband is dead-set on his list of fantasy-type names (Ender, [name]Thor[/name], [name]Odin[/name], Bane, [name]Oberon[/name] etc.)
Can anyone suggest some names that might help us find some middle ground? I could see us settling on the right mythology type name, but I haven’t found the right one. HELP US, BERRIES!
[i]*Our last name is 3 syllables and starts with N.
*Our daughter’s name is Azula [name]Rosemary[/name].
(The girls’ names we have all but settled on for this pregnancy are [name]Athena[/name] [name]Coral[/name] or [name]Valencia[/name] [name]Sage[/name])[/i]
The first one that popped into my head was [name]Sylvan[/name]. It has a fantasy feel to me, but the meaning, from the forest, might make it appeal to you. Also, what about [name]Willow[/name], offbeat for a boy, nature name, and fantasy reference. And he would have [name]Will[/name] to fall back on.
Here are a few more suggestions:
I like [name]Ajax[/name] for you (on the off chance that you live in a country without the cleaning product?!), possibly with the nickname [name]Jack[/name]. Good luck!
Ender is DH’s #1 choice. I actually like it but we told a few people we were thinking about using Ender with our last pregnancy and everyone reacted very negatively toward it - saying it sounded incomplete, or weak, or he’d be too likely to get teased about it. We may still use it but after gettin such a big NO from so many people I’m not so sure about it. What do you all think of Ender? If I had to go with one of his choices though I’d go with that over [name]Odin[/name] or Bane or [name]Thor[/name].
We considered [name]Orion[/name], but we don’t like nn [name]Ry[/name] or [name]Ryan[/name].
I like [name]Ajax[/name] a lot but my cousin named his baby [name]Jaxson[/name] nn [name]Jax[/name] so I think thats too similar.
I’m digging some of these suggestions, especially Alder, [name]Oren[/name] & [name]Zane[/name] (I could probably get him on board with that instead of Bane!).
I love Ender’s Game, so I do really like Ender. It was a nickname in the book though, which is why it feels incomplete.
There’s also [name]Anders[/name], a variation–which you could probably use Ender as a nn for.
Or the more wild [name]Endymion[/name] from mythology.
[name]Love[/name] [name]Zane[/name], there’s also [name]Thane[/name].
edit: also, I should add that the movie version of Ender’s Game is coming out this fall, so I imagine (depending on it’s success) the name will at least become more familiar to people. I’m expecting a burst of popularity for Petra as well.
Trying to generally stay away from names that end in N so they don’t run on with our last name. So maybe not [name]Gryffin[/name]/[name]Larkin[/name] etc.
I love [name]Archer[/name] though, and might warm up to [name]Ulysses[/name] nn [name]Uli[/name] (Ooli) if I think about it for a bit. I could get on board with [name]Cedar[/name] too maybe if I could think of some good nicknames. [name]Flint[/name] to me is too curt sounding & I think [name]Valor[/name], Wulfric, Fenris come off to me as ultra Scandinavian which might not work very well with our very Russian/Ukrainian sounding last name.
A few names we like but have nixed include [name]Orson[/name], [name]Ajax[/name], [name]Atticus[/name], [name]Rohan[/name], [name]Zavier[/name] (they all either end in n & don’t work with our last name or we have close friends or family with similar names).
We have also agreed on the following restrictions when name-choosing: No uber-popular names, nothing that is too crazy to spell or pronounce, and nothing too iconic (ie [name]Zelda[/name] or Annekin or something).
[name]Ulysses[/name] has been growing on me! That is a good one!
I am not sure if I have anything new to contribute, but I will try.
[name]Abraxas[/name]
Leonidis - nn [name]Leon[/name], [name]Lon[/name], or popular [name]Leo[/name]
[name]Leander[/name]
[name]Evander[/name]
[name]Axel[/name]
My Hubs name is [name]Corey[/name], so unfortunately [name]Orion[/name] nn [name]Ori[/name] won’t work for us. And he says [name]Ember[/name] sounds too much like a “girl name”.
I threw a bunch of your suggestions at him though & he is totally on board with [name]Atlas[/name] and [name]Zephyr[/name] & he says he really likes [name]Zane[/name] & [name]Thane[/name] as well! Thanks Berries, I think this is a great bunch of names for us to compromise with. I knew you’s come through!
You’ve got a great list happening there! [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Zephyr[/name] and [name]Atlas[/name]!
A couple more suggestions:
[name]Onyx[/name]
[name]Laiken[/name]
[name]Alta[/name]
[name]West[/name]
[name]Aspen[/name]
[name]Calix[/name]
I like the suggestion of [name]Ember[/name] instead of Ender but agree with your hubs it sounds like girls name… But Ender sounds too much like endometriosis to me…!
Probably not the right choice for us since I [name]LOVE[/name] the movie “[name]Willow[/name]”. It is totally my guilty pleasure movie, (Rool & Franjean, and [name]Fin[/name] Raziel are the best part) and would be a totally riduculous insulting thing to name my baby after that [name]Willow[/name]! Hahaha. Seriously if you’ve never seen it just watch the preview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=TZFtUwAs0wk
HAHAHA Endometriosis!!! [name]Love[/name] it.
Thanks for all the great suggestions!
[name]Abraxas[/name] - Might be too out there for us without a real usable nn.
Leonidis - I know he’ll like this one for the 300 connection!
[name]Evander[/name] - He doesn’t care for it but it WOULD be a good way to get nn Ender.
[name]Axel[/name] - “Like [name]Axel[/name] [name]Rose[/name]?” I actually like this but I would chose [name]Atlas[/name] over [name]Axel[/name] for sure.
[name]Onyx[/name] - He likes it but I think of that rock snake thing from Pokemon.
[name]Laiken[/name] - He doesn’t like [name]Aiken[/name] or anything that sounds like [name]Aiken[/name]. I’ve tried!
[name]Alta[/name] - This is a cool name but apparently not cool enough to sway him from his faves.
[name]West[/name] - I don’t know after K&K just named their kid [name]North[/name].
[name]Aspen[/name] - I love it.
[name]Calix[/name] - Maybe not, just not a fan of nn [name]Cal[/name].
[name]Reynard[/name] - After Reynard the Fox, a trickster in Medeval French fables, and the character Renardine in Gunnerkrigg Court (a sci-fi web comic)
Orvar - Means “arrow” in Old Norse and Orvar-Oddr was a hero in Norse mythology
[name]Fletcher[/name] - Means “maker of arrows”, and a place name ([name]Fletcher[/name] Islands). Also a character in some fantasy settings (Mundungus [name]Fletcher[/name] from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], [name]Morris[/name] [name]Fletcher[/name] in X-Files, [name]Fletcher[/name] Tringham from Fullmetal Alchemist, [name]Fletcher[/name] [name]Renn[/name] from the Skulduggery [name]Pleasant[/name] series)
[name]Briar[/name] or [name]Thorn[/name] - After Blackbriar [name]Thorn[/name], a DC Comics supervillan
[name]Hawk[/name] - After Hawkeye (The Avengers)
Brego - A horse in the [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings film trilogy
[name]Peregrin[/name] - The full first name of [name]Pippin[/name] from [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings, and a type of falcon
[name]Idris[/name] - The TARDIS personified in [name]Doctor[/name] Who episode 'The [name]Doctor[/name]‘s Wife’, and the name of a mountain in [name]Wales[/name] (Cadair [name]Idris[/name])
[name]Wolverine[/name] - Well it’s an animal too!
