I just looked up [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f], one of my new name crushes, up on nameberry and the site says it’s pronounced [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-lin… PLEASE tell me that it’s okay to pronounce it Az-lyn. That’s how I’ve been saying it. A girl that went to my high school has the name and she pronounces it Az-lyn. I live in the United States, if that clears up any questions about my mispronunciation.
Is it really unacceptable to pronounce it Az-lyn? Ughhhhh if it is I’m gonna be so disappointed!
I was also disappointed when I learned the correct Welsh pronunciation and admit that I prefer the sound of the “Ays-linn” mispronunciation. It’s definitely not something I would consider for my own child because it is fairly unusual in the States so it wouldn’t feel right not to pronounce it the Welsh way. Along the same lines, I would, however, be fine with using [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] and pronouncing it the “American” way (rather than the [name_m]French[/name_m] version) since that is widely used.
Well, no, I wouldn’t say it’s ok. Not Irish myself, but I am from another Celtic nation and it irritates me no end when people take the names and pronounce them the way they like rather than what is right. No different to someone mispronouncing an English name. Sorry, but perhaps you could look for other names with a similar sound. Aspen, from your sig, is nice

Meanwhile, I’m also in [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand and I would pronounce it [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-lynn! I haven’t heard of the Az-lynn pronounciation. Before hearing it, I assumed it was Ays-lynn.
Yeah, I hate it when I find out a name is different to what I thought - I loved [name_f]Ada[/name_f] when I thought it was [name_m]Add[/name_m]-uh, and [name_f]Siobhan[/name_f] when I thought it was Sha-bonn. Really don’t like the “real” versions!
I personally don’t have a problem with people choosing to pronounce a name differently to the historic pronunciation, but I do think you need to be aware that if you make that choice, you might be setting your child up for a lifetime of mispronunciation. Its all a matter of whether you think that’s a problem or not.
I’ve never heard az-lin so it sounds very wrong to me. I’ve only ever heard anyone say ash-lin, but I’ve never known one personally. (im in the US)
I’m in the US, and I’ve always known this name as [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-lyn which I am pretty sure is the proper pronunciation. Az-lyn sounds wrong to me. Sorry.

The phonetic spelling would be [name_f]Ashleen[/name_f] or [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f]. The girl you know pronounces her name wrong. 
Grrr! I really am so disappointed. Az-lyn sounds so much cooler to me than the [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] pronunciation. Thank you guys for the input. And yes, [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] and [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] were neck and neck for my new favorite, and now [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] is definitely my favorite over [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f].
definitely [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-lyn or [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-leen. There’s a Canadian actress named [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] who pronounces it as Aiz-lynn, and it drives me crazy
I’ve never heard of this name being pronounced Az-lynn before - I’ve always pronounced it [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-lyn. I personally think it’s disrespectful to take a name from another language and pronounce it however you like, so yes, I’m sorry, but I think it would be unacceptable to pronounce it as Az-lyn.
I would respect the true pronounciation of [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] and make up a spelling for the pronounciation you want.
It’s her name. However she pronounces it is correct, it’s her name.

I know only one [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] and it her name is pronounced [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-lyn. She is from [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]. She is called [name_u]Ash[/name_u] for short, which is cute.
I’m American and when I look at it, I say it Ays-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u]. I’m not familiar with the name’s history and I wouldn’t know any better.
However, if I loved a name and found it that it’s country or culture of origin pronounced it differently (and the intended correct way), I wouldn’t choose that name if I disliked it’s correct pronunciation.

I thought it was pronounced “ICE-lyn!” LOL Also, as a side note…there was a little girl I knew about 20 years ago…her name was [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], pronounced
“jahn-vee-EV.”

Yeah that’s the “[name_m]French[/name_m]” way I was referring to. Some sticklers will argue that it is really the only correct way to pronounce it. (I disagree)
