Okay -- WEIRD question...

Would anyone out there (other than me!), name an Australian [name]Shepherd[/name] Australia and call him Aussie? Is that just too cliched for words?

Not that I’m set on it. I’m open to other names for an Australian [name]Shepherd[/name].

I actually think its cute! I’d probably go with [name]Oz[/name] or [name]Ozzy[/name], but I’m not sure that’s really all that different than Aussie.

Not weird at all.
Some names I think of are OutBack then you can call him obie. But aussie is awesome.

My co-worker has an Australian [name]Shepard[/name] named Aussie. Also a friend of mine had Australian Shepards growing up and I think one of them may have been named Aussie/[name]Ozzy[/name]. (Not sure of spelling)

I think it’s pretty cheesy. [name]How[/name] about [name]Oscar[/name] or [name]Oswald[/name] nicknamed [name]Ozzie[/name]?

Yeah, I think ultimately I’m going to vote with you, irisrose, although I like Aussie (with an ‘s’ sound) in other contexts. But this reminds me of a [name]Brittany[/name] (dog) named – [name]Britney[/name] – after the singer – which just made it worse. (It was okay, though, because the kids chose the name, and when kids name a dog, they can do no wrong in my eyes.)

[name]Ozzie[/name] or [name]Ozzy[/name] with the ‘z’ make me think of “[name]Ozzie[/name] and [name]Harriet[/name]” or that ghastly burned out guy named [name]Ozzy[/name] – who was a rocker(???) and became an early reality show star(???). Anyway – I don’t remember him vividly (obviously), but it is not a good memory. [name]Just[/name] confusing the matter, Australians call themselve Ozzies with a ‘z.’ (I believe.)

I’ve never become a [name]Oscar[/name] fan. Sigh. Maybe I’m just not young enough.

For me, [name]Oswald[/name] killed President [name]Kennedy[/name].

Wow. i’m depressing myself!

Fortunately, I like a lot of other sounds for an Australian [name]Shepherd[/name]. Here are some others on my list:

[name]Silas[/name] (early favorite)
[name]Brighton[/name]
[name]River[/name]

I’m not sure what color my Aussie puppy will be, but if he is a red tri, I thought [name]Rowan[/name] ([name]Rory[/name]) might be fun. If he is a blue merle, [name]Ocean[/name] might work. Or [name]Pacific[/name], call name [name]Pax[/name].

Despite the name, Australian Shepherds are from the American [name]West[/name], and with that theme, I’ve considered [name]Autry[/name], [name]Destry[/name], and [name]Denver[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Durango[/name], but it’s a lot of name, and I can’t find a good two syllable call name in it. Maybe for a cow dog name, [name]Wyatt[/name]?

Utterly confusing the question, I’d like to get two puppies, a boy and a girl, so I need two names that work together!

I see no problem with it at all. It’s a dog. It doesn’t care what it’s name is, and neither will anyone else.

I’m glad you are supportive of Aussie as a name, as other Australian Shepherds have it (and I think the name is cute on its own), but as for caring – well – I do! I think it important you love your dog’s name for the same reason it is important to love your kid’s name – because it is a word you are going to be saying dozens of times a day – hopefully for a long time – maybe for 15 years.

I also love to socialize by walking my dog. (I’m not alone.) “What is your dog’s name?” is the usual ice-breaker with fellow dog walkers, and I’d like the answer to be a word I like – no, make that [name]LOVE[/name]!

[name]Bonnie[/name],

This is a tough one, because I do think Aussie is a cute name. Not so big on Australia, but Aussie is cute. [name]Just[/name], I take pet naming pretty darn seriously and, like you, dread the “…oh” response from someone who asks your pet’s name. Then again, I like a good story behind the name just as much as any other person. But, is “Well, he’s an Australian [name]Shepherd[/name], so we call him Aussie” really a good story? Nope, not for me. I will say that I actually love [name]Shepherd[/name] as a name, but maybe not for an Australian [name]Shepherd[/name]. I could see that working well on a sheepdog, though - so cute!

From your list, I think [name]Silas[/name] “[name]Si[/name]” is amazing. Or, you could go with the requisite doggy nickname - other than [name]Buddy[/name] - “Lassy.” That’s a little girlish, though! So, [name]Silas[/name] “[name]Si[/name]” is my vote - love that for a [name]Red[/name] [name]Merle[/name], [name]Red[/name] (Liver), or [name]Black[/name] Tricolor. I think [name]Brighton[/name] is superb for a [name]Blue[/name] [name]Merle[/name], too. [name]Rowan[/name] for a [name]Red[/name] [name]Merle[/name] is too cute, though - I really want to get an Irish Setter and name him [name]Rory[/name]! And, [name]Destry[/name] is neat, too - I could see that on a [name]Blue[/name] [name]Merle[/name] or a [name]Red[/name], I think.

[name]Lemon[/name]

Are we talking about dogs? I have only ever heard of a [name]German[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name] or Alsation never an Australian [name]Shepherd[/name].

[name]Don[/name]'t like Aussie for a dog’s name.

Thank you so much, [name]Lemon[/name]! I love your advice, as always. Interesting, I was leaing [name]Si[/name] or [name]Bright[/name]. Many blue merles are – [name]Bright[/name] is a good word for it. As I (hope) am getting a girl and boy pair some possibilities include:

Western
[name]Destry[/name] and [name]Mamie[/name]
[name]Autry[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name] ([name]Emme[/name])

Classic-Western Crossover
[name]Silas[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name] ([name]Si[/name] and [name]Emme[/name])
[name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name] ([name]Jas[/name] and [name]Emme[/name])

[name]Bright[/name] Contemporary
[name]Brighton[/name] [name]Blue[/name] and [name]Fifer[/name] [name]Bay[/name]

You must be from Europe or [name]Canada[/name]! Most Americans have never heard of an Alsation!

Austrailian Shepherds are a different breed, however. They are closer to the original collie or a Border [name]Collie[/name] than a [name]German[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name]. [name]Do[/name] a google image search. You will be glad you did! These dogs are often adorable.

Or just click on these pages. In fact, anyone who wants to can arrow through these pages. The photos are charming, and you just might be inspired to help me name my (future) puppies!

Semi-OT, but while we’re talking about Australia as a name I once was thinking of new ideas for avant-garde celebrity baby names and this was one of the ideas I came up with. What gender do you think it would work best for?

I’m not sure either! That final ‘a’ seems to put it in feminine territory, but overall, my image of it is masculine. I think it is rather a cool name, not that I would use it myself. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some avant garde celebrity did. But then they would have the nn problem. It is a long name and really needs a nn. Aussie might work for some, but it seems strange, like a boy name English or American – not [name]England[/name] or [name]America[/name].
