Old-Fashioned, Unique Baby Boy Names

I am currently searching for an old-fashioned, unique name for my son. I want a name that is old-fashioned without sounding feminine. This task is proving to be rather difficult. I have shared some of my favorite names with family and friends, most of whom are very disapproving of my choices. One of my favorite names is [name_m]George[/name_m] but I’m afraid to use it as I predict it will become extremely popular in the coming months thanks to [name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m] of Cambridge.

I would appreciate your opinions on my list, as well as any suggestions you might have for me!

My list includes:
[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u])
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] (so popular, but still a favorite!)
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u])

Thanks so much for your help!

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] - love
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] - love
[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - like*
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] - love
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - love
[name_m]George[/name_m] - love
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] - like*
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] - love {especially with nickname [name_m]Pip[/name_m]}
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] - love
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] - love

*like vs. love because my personal preference is more spunk.

Suggestions: [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_m]Matthias[/name_m], [name_m]Matteo[/name_m], [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m]

Thank you, apollonia for your kind words! I, too, love spunky names

From your suggestions, I love:
[name_m]Louis[/name_m] (LOO-ee)

Thanks, again!

Old-fashinion, unique… That’s what I’m looking for, too.

Here is my verdict on your names:

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]) - a bit too stern for my tastes
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]
[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] but worried about Twilight fame
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] - strong associations with [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] Blackadder. :stuck_out_tongue: Otehrwise it’s a fine name
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]²: My No. 1 boys’ name
[name_m]George[/name_m] - like but a bit too popular for my tastes
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] (so popular, but still a favorite!) - not really my style
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] - like
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] - like very much but strong associations with [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Giles[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]) - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] (especially NN [name_u]Theo[/name_u]): This is my second favourite boys’ name right now.

Further suggestions:

And a bit more “out there”:
[name_m]Algernon[/name_m] ([name_m]Algie[/name_m])

[name_u]August[/name_u], rather than [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]) - Like, but prefer [name_u]August[/name_u] or [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m].
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] - Dislike
[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - Dislike
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] - [name_f]Love[/name_f], would use this to get to [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], too.
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - It’s ok.
[name_m]George[/name_m] - Not fond of it.
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] - Hate it.
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] - Like it!
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] - Like it!
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]) - [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] or [name_m]Ned[/name_m], but would get there via [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]) - [name_f]Love[/name_f] this! so handsome.
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] - Dislike
[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - Dislike
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] - Dislike
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - Dislike
[name_m]George[/name_m] - Its Okay.
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] - Its Okay.
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] - Not my style.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] - Like it!
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]) - [name_f]Love[/name_f] this!

Other suggestions:
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] nn [name_m]Walt[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] - [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] nn [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] nn [name_m]Art[/name_m]

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]): I’m not a fan of these “ancient” names–I prefer [name_u]August[/name_u]. Or [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]: This one is nice in theory, but always sounds a little snooty in practice
[name_m]Edward[/name_m]: Nothing wrong with this name
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]: Sounds like it’s trying a little too hard (at least to this SoCal gal)
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]: You’ve got to be happy with the inevitable [name_m]Fred[/name_m].
[name_m]George[/name_m]: I like [name_m]George[/name_m] a lot! I don’t think it will get TOO popular.
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] (so popular, but still a favorite!): Classic names never go out of style; I wouldn’t consider it “so popular,” just timeless.
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]: It’s good.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]: It’s ok. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]?
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]): I like this one.

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] is great, but I think [name_u]August[/name_u] is actually stronger. I know a little boy in [name_m]Des[/name_m] Moines, Iowa, named [name_u]August[/name_u]. He is ALL BOY!

My favorite on your list is [name_m]Philip[/name_m].

Other “old guy” names that might be ready for a rebirth:
[name_m]Nelson[/name_m] (as a first name – and what a great tribute to [name_m]Nelson[/name_m] [name_m]Mandela[/name_m]!)
[name_m]Richard[/name_m] – kingly, with lots of nicknames
[name_m]Royal[/name_m] ([name_f]Remember[/name_f] Almanzo [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]'s brother in “[name_m]Farmer[/name_m] Boy” by [name_f]Laural[/name_f] Ingalls [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]?)

my thoughts:

[name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]) - like it, but i personally wouldn’t use it (I have others I like better) but still a nice name.
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] - a little stiff in my opinion, but a great alternative [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] if you’re looking for that nickname.
[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - alright, but I much prefer [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] - adore [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]. My current favorite combo is [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m].
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - love love love [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. It always reminds me of the swoon-worthy [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] Wenthworth from [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u]'s Persuasion (“I have loved none but you…”)
[name_m]George[/name_m] - I’m ashamed to admit it but hearing about [name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m] everywhere has most certainly influenced my opinion of the name - now I think it’s adorable on a young boy!
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] (so popular, but still a favorite!) - found my love for [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] again watching Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] (such blue eyes!). You can’t ever go wrong with this one.
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] - okay. not a favorite, but I like it.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] - not a fan, but it’s definitely a matter of personal preference.
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]) - oh, I adore [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]! If only my absolute favorite weren’t [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]…

suggestions: [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Gil[/name_m]), [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Conrad[/name_m], and [name_m]Silas[/name_m].
