Old fashioned warrior princess?!

[name]Hi[/name],
I keep asking for names in different ways - thanks for your help and patience.

So I think because my first daughter’s name is [name]Gwendolen[/name] ([name]Gwen[/name]) I want to find another name that feels like an olden days warrior/tough princess. Thoughts?

Also - my hubby mentioned last night that he likes really out there names (not usual/popular) and all of his suggestions are very old-fashioned and tend to be Welsh/British in origin (our son is Diggory - old Cornish name). My problem with a lot of his name suggestions is that they sound too harsh - not pretty enough like [name]Gwendolen[/name].

Phew - I’m stumped - what can you name geniuses come up with?

I don’t know if I’ve struck the right chord with the old fashioned warrior princess thing, but I think these names compliment [name]Gwendolen[/name] and Diggory well.

[name]Veronica[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Cornelia[/name]
[name]Nicolette[/name]
[name]Cassandra[/name]
[name]Christiana[/name]
[name]Hermione[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Prudence[/name]
[name]Margo[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name]
[name]Meredith[/name]
[name]Lorelei[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Celeste[/name]
[name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Alana[/name]
[name]Rhiannon[/name]
[name]Marguerite[/name]
[name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Carys[/name]
Evanthia
[name]Marion[/name]
[name]Adele[/name]
[name]Nola[/name]
[name]Nuala[/name]
[name]Bethany[/name]
[name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]

Boadicea? Doesn’t get much more “warrior princess” than that - unless you go the [name]Xena[/name] route…

Seriously though, something like [name]Medbh[/name]/[name]Maeve[/name] could work - the original [name]Medbh[/name] was a pretty ruthless [name]Queen[/name] of Connaught, lots of great legends for a little namesake

[name]Macha[/name] (Mah-kha) and Neamhain (Now-ayn) were the two warrior goddesses in Irish mythology. Neamhain might be a bit too exotic with [name]Gwendolen[/name], but [name]Macha[/name] could work.

It might be worth looking into other mythologies - [name]Roman[/name], Greek, Egyptian, or Native American, perhaps - to find a name with a good back story and a good flow with her siblings’.

Good luck!

[name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Athena[/name]
[name]Artemis[/name] ([name]Goddess[/name] of the hunt, [name]DIANA[/name] is her [name]Roman[/name] name)
Boudica (formerly known as Boudicia, but they retranslated her name, pronounced [name]Bo[/name]-di-ka) - Celtic [name]Queen[/name]
[name]Cleo[/name]/[name]Cleopatra[/name]
Slightly less ancient but [name]Victoria[/name]
[name]Dido[/name]

Bit bleary eyed, but will think about this - good topic!

I like your naming style!

[name]How[/name] about [name]Eloise[/name]? That name actually means “warrior maiden,” and it fits beautifully with your other children’s names.

A couple others jumped to mind:
[name]Lavinia[/name] (although this may have too [name]Roman[/name] of a feel for you)
[name]Lorelei[/name]

Another is on the tip of my tongue, but I just can’t remember it.

~[name]Frances[/name]

[name]Isolde[/name]! That’s the name I was thinking of.

Also, I did a search at another site and saw a few interesting possibilities:
[name]Arwen[/name]
[name]Rhiannon[/name]
[name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Bryn[/name]
[name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Wynn[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] some of these pique your interest.

The first name that came to mind for me was [name]Aliena[/name]. If anyone has ever read The Pillars of the [name]Earth[/name], she was the very beautiful daughter of an [name]Earl[/name] who hits rock bottom when her father loses his Earldom. She finds a strength she never knew she had before and becomes a very successful businesswoman, which was pretty impressive for the 16th century. [name]Even[/name] though she’s a fictional character, I would definitely say she was a warrior.

Thanks for the replies - I’ll run them by the hubby.

sorry for any doubles

My first thought was [name]Rhiannon[/name], or if you were to go with a different nationality, my name, [name]Freya[/name].

The first thing that popped inot my head was [name]Genevra[/name]- don’t know why. [name]Gwendolen[/name] in the ultimate warrior princess name. Here are some other ideas.

Alannna (form Song of the Lioness quartet by [name]Tamora[/name] [name]Pierce[/name]- character fits the description perfectly)
[name]Aloisa[/name] (warrior- very pretty like [name]Gwendolen[/name])
[name]Bellatrix[/name] (warrior- mixes pretty sound of [name]Bella[/name] and hard sound of trix)
[name]Curran[/name] (Celtic, and means hero)
[name]Isolde[/name] (tragic heroine of Celtic myth)
[name]Atalanta[/name] (Greek warrioress)
Polyxena (Trojan princess)
[name]Alessia[/name] (VERY pretty name that means warrior)

From my list, I think [name]Alessia[/name], [name]Aloisa[/name], or Polyxena would be the best choices.

Funny, that’s exactly why I’ve chosen [name]Gwendolyn[/name] for my first daughter!

[name]Priscilla[/name]
Breises
[name]Antigone[/name]
[name]Jillian[/name]
Adreone
[name]Cillian[/name]
[name]Marissa[/name]
[name]Bronwen[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name]

The first name that popped in my head was Coriander. Or Celendine. I always pair those two in my head. But I think Coriander is tougher-sounding. [name]Isolde[/name], perhaps? That’s pretty.

I love a lot of the suggestions especially

[name]Rhiannon[/name]
[name]Athena[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Maeve[/name]

Here are a few other thoughts:
[name]Brigit[/name]
[name]Vesta[/name]
Megaera
[name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Hedwig[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] (strength in battle and the name of princesses!)

First off your children’s names are awesome!
Here are some ideas:

Aella- Amazon Warrior
[name]Bellatrix[/name]- means female warrior
[name]Camilla[/name]- legendary warrior maiden
[name]Maeve[/name]- [name]Queen[/name] of Connacht

[name]Aida[/name]- Ethiopian princess
[name]Aisha[/name]- [name]Princess[/name] of [name]Jordan[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]- [name]Princess[/name] of [name]East[/name] Anglia
Europa- Phoenician [name]Princess[/name]
Galadriel- Elfin princess in [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings
Heledd- Welsh princess
[name]Ileana[/name]- Romanian princess
[name]Imogen[/name]- [name]May[/name] be two matchy matchy with [name]Gwendolen[/name]
[name]Isolde[/name]- love this name and think it would sound like a great sibset with [name]Gwendolen[/name]
[name]Odette[/name]- [name]Princess[/name] from Swan [name]Lake[/name]
[name]Rhiannon[/name]- Welsh [name]Princess[/name]
[name]Sarah[/name]- means literally princess

My favorite names are [name]Maeve[/name], Galadriel, [name]Isolde[/name] and [name]Rhiannon[/name].
