My family is [name]German[/name] and my grandmother came to Australia by boat after the World War II. I’d really love to honour some of the women in my family. Personally, I don’t really like many of our family names, from this side. But I was hoping if you Berries good help me maybe find some jems amongst the unattractive ones! aha. [name]Even[/name] if they’re a stretch in relation.
Here’s the list:
[name]Irmgard[/name] - It’s alright, I can only see [name]Irma[/name] as a possibility.
[name]Ursula[/name] - I dislike this!
[name]Else[/name] pronounced [name]El[/name]-sie
[name]Margarethe[/name]
[name]Antonia[/name] - My favourite out of the names I found so far.
I’m also open to any ideas of any pretty german girls names besides the common ones used now. [name]Just[/name] not [name]Gertrude[/name] or [name]Brunhilda[/name]! aha.
I’m doing family history searches so I may post them as well, later on.
Thank you!
I also have [name]German[/name] heritage (Austrian actually - but obviously the language is the same).
Names from my family tree that I love are:
[name]Margarethe[/name] - nn [name]Greta[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name] - nn [name]Lotta[/name] (to reflect the [name]German[/name] pronunciation)
[name]Valerie[/name] is also an oft used name in my family tree, but not one that I am particularly fond of.
I don’t have any [name]German[/name] heritage that I know of but here is some names that might work:
[name]Albina[/name]/[name]Albine[/name]

Oooh, I love all the suggestions on this thread! My dad’s traced traced our family tree back to the 1600s in Germany/the [name]Black[/name] [name]Forest[/name], so [name]German[/name] culture always fascinates me. Some of my favorite [name]German[/name] names are [name]Johanna[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name] (not sure if this is [name]German[/name] or not, but I’ve heard it is!), [name]Greta[/name] (I like this better on its own than any of the fuller ways to get it, like [name]Margaret[/name] and such), and [name]Clara[/name]/[name]Klara[/name].
I’m trying to remember the names on my [name]German[/name] side, but I’m not sure I remember too many. There were a lot of Claras, Annas, and Katerinas (not sure of the proper [name]German[/name] spelling)… If I have time I might go look it up a bit later, and leave a few more suggestions.
Good luck!

This list is great, and a few favorites of mine are on here also.
I love the combo of [name]Ingrid[/name] [name]Sabine[/name]. Although I also really love [name]Sabine[/name] as a first name, and I’m a supporter of [name]Elsa[/name]/[name]Ilse[/name] (Ill-sah).

[name]Johanna[/name]
Wilmene
[name]Wilhelmina[/name]
[name]Annette[/name]
[name]Tressa[/name]

Those are strictly from my ancestral tree.
You can also go here for a list of feminine [name]German[/name] names:
[name]Anneliese[/name] is one of my favorite [name]German[/name] names.
Popular names in Germany around the end of World War 2 and 1950’s:
[name]Angelika[/name]
[name]Marion[/name]
[name]Heidi[/name]
[name]Erika[/name] / [name]Erica[/name]
[name]Sonja[/name]
[name]Kerstin[/name]

[name]Annemarie[/name]
[name]Annelie[/name]
[name]Marlene[/name]
Irmelin maybe?
I lived in Germany for a little while, and have close friends from there.
I knew a [name]Hannelore[/name] while in Germany, I always loved her name and I’m pretty sure it was old-school [name]German[/name], although I’m not 100% on the origin–it might have Dutch roots. She pronounced it Hahn-uh-LOR-eh, although I have also heard it just Hahn-uh-lore.
[name]Anneliese[/name]
[name]Sabina[/name] or [name]Sabine[/name]
I have a [name]Zella[/name] in my family, named after a [name]German[/name] ancestress. People compliment her on her striking name all the time.
[name]Kirsten[/name], [name]Johanna[/name], [name]Henriette[/name], [name]Henrietta[/name]
Some nice ones are:
[name]Greta[/name]
[name]Hanna[/name]
[name]Ingrid[/name]
[name]Inga[/name]
[name]Ilse[/name]
[name]Elsa[/name]
[name]Elsie[/name]
[name]Heidi[/name]
I [name]LOVE[/name] the name Kaethe. It’s not listed on nameberry, but it’s listed on babynames.com. It’s pronounced [name]Kay[/name]-tah. Such a pretty alternative to [name]Katherine[/name] or [name]Katie[/name], too.
Almost none of the names listed here are [name_m]German[/name_m] names.
I created an account to respond to a several years old thread to make certain the ignorant people on the web knew this.
I can assist in [name_m]German[/name_m] names, etymology, and history is one is interested.
BTW- Here are some of my favorites. I included both genders, as many [name_m]German[/name_m] male names may be feminised:
