I am a week away from my due date, and I’m still hesitant on baby girl’s name. My husband and I have almost decided on the name “[name_f]Olive[/name_f]”, but I just don’t like how close it is to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] (a name I disliked in the first place, then on top of that finding out that it is one of the top three most popular girls’ names). Plus, it is getting more and more popular.
Recently I came across the name “[name_f]Season[/name_f]” again and I like how different and poetic it is. I knew a girl back in school with this name, and I always thought it was a beautiful name.
My husband is not too keen on [name_f]Season[/name_f], but we have very different tastes in names. We traded lists of names early on, and there was no way I would name my kid anything that was on his list, and he had very strong negative feelings about many of the names on my list. It was a marvel that we even agreed on [name_f]Olive[/name_f].
here are some choices for middle names for both, I’m trying to keep the MNs to just one or two syllables:
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] when you hear [name_f]Olive[/name_f]? Is [name_f]Season[/name_f] too “out there”? Which do you prefer?
I definitely prefer [name_f]Olive[/name_f], and I don’t think of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] at all when I hear it.
When I hear [name_f]Olive[/name_f] I think of a sweet, blond hair blue eyed girl who loves animals, the outdoors and sports, is very outgoing and loves adventure. She’s intelligent, and loves to help others…she’s the girl who sits with the kid who’s alone at lunch to make sure they’re okay, and invites them to sit with her friends, or to just do their own thing together. She stands up for others when no one else will, and chooses to see the best in everyone.
I can also see [name_f]Olive[/name_f] on an adult as well as an old woman…The adult/elderly [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is very open-minded, outspoken and has a great sense of humour. She’s the professional business woman, university lecturer, or vet nurse…or the sweet little old lady who gives everyone who visits her candy…or a wise old woman whom everyone loves to stop to have a friendly, lengthy conversation with when they see her in the street or in a store.
My favourite [name_f]Olive[/name_f] combo from your list is [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Might I also suggest [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] or [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Paige[/name_f]…
I simply can’t imagine [name_f]Season[/name_f] working well on a real person over the age of 10…I like the idea of the name [name_f]Season[/name_f], but in reality I can’t see it as an actual name, sorry.
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] isn’t my favourite name, it reminds me of [name_f]Olive[/name_f] Oyl from Popeye, but I prefer it to [name_f]Season[/name_f] which doesn’t sound like a real name at all!
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] is a great name. I guess you can’t use [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Season[/name_f]! It is important that you both like the name so for that reason you really can’t use it. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is super cute! It has a very different sound to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f].
I absolutely love love Olive! Gorgeous!!! A beautiful name for a beautiful girl.
The olive tree is just beautiful and I love the meaning behind it…the Olive tree is a symbol of peace and abundance…grow and flourish in rocky soils where other plants cannot and I love the vintage, spunky, nature vibe to the name. It’s so charming. I think it’s a name that is so sweet for a child and beautiful for an adult.
I adore Olive Winter and Olive Belle…
I really like [name_f]Olive[/name_f]!! Great name and I think it works in a person of any age too.
[name_f]Season[/name_f] is nice in theory, but I just think of seasoning the food. Plus, (and I’ve no idea how common this is, but…) I have the association of many animal people refering to a female animal being “in season” during her cycle - not an association too many people would make, but if she were to grow up working with animals, it could be an awkward name. Not to be a downer on the name, but just an fyi.
I like pp’s suggestion of [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] too!
I love [name_f]Olive[/name_f], despite it’s rising popularity. And while it is slightly similar to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] I think it has a very different feel. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] reminds me of the lovely Mediterranean sun, rolling hills and sparkling seas. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] I think of as a more traditional very girly name. I am not a big fan of [name_f]Season[/name_f] personally, it feels incomplete to me for a name, I’d prefer [name_f]Summer[/name_f].
I like [name_f]Olive[/name_f], it’s my mom’s middle name. I agree with PPs that [name_f]Season[/name_f] probably wont work well as a name. All I think of is seasoning food. I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] would work well for you.
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is so sweet! No I don’t think it’s too close to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. I think it has its own history and sound. One of my friend’s has a girl named [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and she is so bright, cute and funny!
I much prefer [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. I don’t think of it as being that similar to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], which is beautiful to me - but in a very different way to [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. In fact, that is why more people looking for [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] alternatives seem open to [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] and [name_f]Octavia[/name_f]. Those names, and names like [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], are frilly and super feminine, like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is one that I associate more with vintage names such as [name_f]Maude[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].
I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Olive[/name_f], but definitely prefer it to [name_f]Season[/name_f]. I don’t think it sounds too close to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. Visually, they’re close, but when you say them, they start with different vowel sounds and have a completely different rhythm to them.
I want to like [name_f]Season[/name_f], but I just don’t think it works. I’m with a few others in thinking of food seasoning rather quickly. I like a PP’s suggestion of [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]. Another name similar to [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] that I like is [name_u]Story[/name_u]. Quirky, but not in the off way that [name_f]Season[/name_f] seems to me.
Thank you so much for your replies! I didn’t think so many people would associate [name_f]Season[/name_f] with food, so that was definitely good to know.
Thank you for the other suggestions as well. [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] would make a beautiful name!
I think most likely we will keep [name_f]Olive[/name_f], unless inspiration strikes when I see her little face.
