Oliver for a girl?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! The other day I was trying to come up with a name for a character and someone suggested [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], for a GIRL! At first I didn’t like it, but as I thought about it more, I began to really like it, especially for that character. What do you think?
Thanks,
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] xx

It’s nice for a character, but I wouldn’t be able to get behind it for an actual child.

Other ideas:
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]/[name_f]Olivine[/name_f]/[name_f]Olive[/name_f] (you could always use the nn [name_u]Olly[/name_u], if [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]'s boyishness is what you like)
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]/[name_f]Luciana[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucienne[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucette[/name_f]/[name_f]Luella[/name_f]/[name_f]Luana[/name_f]/[name_f]Luanne[/name_f] nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lu[/name_f]
[name_f]Martina[/name_f]/[name_f]Mariette[/name_f] nn [name_f]Martie[/name_f]
[name_f]Danielle[/name_f]/[name_f]Danica[/name_f] nn [name_u]Dannie[/name_u]
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cricket[/name_f]
[name_f]Melanie[/name_f]/[name_f]Melantha[/name_f]/[name_f]Melora[/name_f] nn [name_u]Mel[/name_u]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]/[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] nn [name_u]Cam[/name_u]

Is that kind of what you’re looking for?

Seriously? No. There are some lovely feminine forms of [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] that namelover listed.

Not for a girl, even if it’s only for a character.

[name_f]Olive[/name_f] = good
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] = ok
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - no

I see what you mean about how it actually kind of works as a girl’s name, [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. When I first saw the thread title, I thought “no way!”, but on second glance I realized that the name does have an appealing, soft sound. Still, because [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is so masculine I don’t think I could get behind the idea of it on a girl in real life. I think the name [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] captures the same sound/feel while avoiding the masculine name problem.

I think it is just absurd.

I like it for a real child or not.

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is great for a BOY. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is a girl option, only one letter away and as lovely. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] on a girl is just ridiculous, I’d (maybe) understand if you like boys’ name but there are no girl variant so you use the man form but it’s not that situation.

I wouldn’t use [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] for a real girl, but its not too crazy for a character. Its too masculine for a real girl, in my opinion. But then again, people use [name_u]Logan[/name_u] and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] on a girl, so why not?

No… [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] for a boy.

NOOOOOOOOO.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] NO.

I like unisex names. but [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] IS NOT a unisex names. Go with [name_f]Olive[/name_f]!!

On a character…eh. What they hey? I’ve named girls [name_m]Dave[/name_m], [name_f]Bobbi[/name_f], Nyathera, Halyn, If, (yes, If) and I’m considering some named [name_f]Quintessence[/name_f], [name_f]Idony[/name_f], and [name_u]Genesis[/name_u]. As long as the characters have a reason for being named the way they were, it works. (Nyathera belonged to a fantasy world, Halyn’s dad wanted a son named [name_m]Hal[/name_m], her mom wanted a girl named [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]. They compromised. If named herself on a whim. I think her real name is [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_f]Hope[/name_f] something. I forgot)

Have you ever considered the name Olianne/[name_f]Olianna[/name_f]/Oleanne/[name_f]Oleanna[/name_f]? or Oliviana? I do like [name_u]Olly[/name_u] as a nickname. Still, as a writer you have to have a reason your characters are named that. Why would [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]'s parents decide to name her [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]?

for a fake person yes, a real one A DEFINITE NO.

ps the book would have to mention why she was named as such, probably a comical back story, she either is neutral/oblivious to the name or has anywhere from mild to large amount of dislike for it. and she most likely will have the nickname [name_f]Olive[/name_f] or O.

I always feel so negative when I reply to “Boy name on a Girl” threads, but I just can’t get behind it! [name_m]Even[/name_m] on a character, I’d be distracted. You could be describing Ms. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and I wouldn’t be able to see HER, I’d see a guy.
I guess if there was a back story (like @orphanedhanyou described) I wouldn’t mind as much.
But my knee-jerk reaction is a loud NO.

I love it!!! It’s adorable, but would also age well, and if she turns into a complete girly-girl could always go by [name_f]Olive[/name_f] or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f].

I saw [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] in your signature…also adorable names.

Good luck!

Can’t imagine it at all. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is and always will be a boys name. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] are close.

I love the name [name_m]Olivier[/name_m] for a girl!! I absolutely under no circumstances feel its a masculine name. Kind of like naming a boy [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]. I’ve met some, can’t get behind it! But [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is a stretch even for me… (:
