Hello everyone, I would like to know your thoughts on the name [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]/[name_m]Ol[/name_m]ímpia. I’m Brazilian and still years away from motherhood, if I ever get there, but as a name lover, I can’t help but think of the future.
In my language, Portuguese, [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]/[name_m]Ol[/name_m]ímpia is pronounced O-LEEM-pya. If in an English speaking country, I would pronounce it the standard English way… that to me is in no way a problem as I love both pronounciations.
I’m also most likely to use the [name_m]Ol[/name_m]ímpia spelling with an “i” and accent mark (guarantees the stronger EE-sound).
What are your thoughts on the name? what do you think of a mother who names her child this? What kind of child do you imagine with this name?
It’s a strong name! Makes me think of socialites portrayed by [name_f]Fernanda[/name_f] Montenegro (v. Bia Falcão) :PP
I think it has an antique charm to it. It’s not my favorite, though, cause it’s too old lady/theatrical/[name_m]Vila[/name_m] [name_m]Ol[/name_m]ímpia for my liking ([name_m]Vila[/name_m] [name_m]Ol[/name_m]ímpia is only an issue if you’re in SP though). I vote for the [name_m]Ol[/name_m]ímpia spelling, because unnecessary foreign spellings bother me (and the y in the middle makes it look kre8tif, a la Isabelly and Danyelly).
I laughed out loud with the Bia Falcão reference. In school my classmates kind of nicknamed me after her. I agree with you on the unnecessary foreign spellings into Portuguese. Perfect way to destroy perfectly respectable names! No, I don’t live in SP, rather in Belo Horizonte, although I’m not exactly from here.
