Oona, Una or Oonagh?

What spelling do you prefer? I personally prefer [name_f]Oona[/name_f], as I’ve always loved it. I also like the spelling [name_f]Oonagh[/name_f] and [name_f]Una[/name_f], but for [name_f]Oonagh[/name_f], I’m worried people might associate it with [name_f]Amber[/name_f] Heard, and that is not the vibe I’m going for.
[name_f][/name_f]I’m also a big fan of nicknames and just can’t think of any[name_f][/name_f], so I am open to nicknames!
[name_f][/name_f]I also want to know what you would name siblings to Oona/Una/Oonagh and what middle names work with Oona/Una/Oonagh

Not sure how [name_f]Oonagh[/name_f] & [name_f]Amber[/name_f] Heard are related, tbh, and she’s not a huge[name_f][/name_f] celebrity anyway so it’s probably fine? I’ve not heard her name since the trial from a few years ago so unless I’m in a bubble, I don’t see it as a defining association.

[name_f][/name_f]

That said, I like [name_f]Una[/name_f] the most! It’s the most international spelling and I find the look of the U more chic than the Oo!

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is definitely Una…short and so so sweet :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:[name_f][/name_f] I don’t mind [name_f]Oonagh[/name_f] or [name_f]Oona[/name_f], but they give very different vibes to me than what [name_f]Una[/name_f] does!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite combo is [name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], but I also like…

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Wren[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

For siblings, I’d choose [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maude[/name_f] for sisters, [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] and [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] for brothers.

[name_f][/name_f]

The ‘obvious’ nicknames would be Uni, Nuni, and [name_f]Nan[/name_f] (sounds like a cartoon :joy:)[name_f][/name_f] but apart from that I think you’d have to get creative, maybe pair it with the middle! E.g. [name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] could become [name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f], or [name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f] could become [name_f]Uma[/name_f] or [name_f]Umi[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] these help!

I love [name_f]Oona[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] I prefer the [name_f]Oona[/name_f] spelling; it feels more sweet and bubbly to me, and I don’t love[name_f][/name_f] that [name_f]Una[/name_f] just reminds me of a very mundane word in Spanish. [name_f][/name_f] I’m not sure about a nn, [name_f]Oona[/name_f] is already pretty short, unless you do something like Noonie or [name_m]Nana[/name_m]? [name_f][/name_f] Those don’t really feel any shorter than [name_f]Oona[/name_f], though, so I would probably go with just [name_f]Oona[/name_f] unless it was a combo nn like [name_f]Oona[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] or something like [name_f]Oona[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Oona[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Oona[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], etc.

[name_f][/name_f]

I would lean toward something [name_m]Irish[/name_m] but also something that feels approachable outside of Ireland… [name_f][/name_f] something like Neve/Niamh, [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], etc.? [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite combo with [name_f]Oona[/name_f] in it is [name_f]Oona[/name_f] [name_f]Chapel[/name_f] or Liliandil [name_f]Oona[/name_f], so I would be very tempted to pair a [name_f]Lily[/name_f] name with Oona; I love Liliandil [name_f]Oona[/name_f] a lot.

[name_f][/name_f]

Good luck!

[name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- sweet, simple and lovely!! But i like the others too [name_f][/name_f]- especially [name_f]Oonagh[/name_f]!

All three are lovely however I love the symmetry and overall look off [name_f]Oona[/name_f] she’s so bright and fun. Regarding nicknames the name is already very short so I do not see how you can nickname her in all honesty. I’ve seen some of the berries have created nicknames for her but for me [name_f]Oona[/name_f] is one of those rare gems that doesn’t get shortened and just stands bold as [name_f]Oona[/name_f].

[name_f]Una[/name_f] or [name_f]Oona[/name_f] for me.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Una[/name_f] is chic, spare and understated. [name_f]Oona[/name_f] is fun and quirky. Both fabulous!

[name_f][/name_f]

Visually I don’t like the -gh spelling as much.

I totally get the [name_f]Oona[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] love [name_f][/name_f]- it’s such a simple, elegant spelling and just feels really approachable. I agree that [name_f]Oonagh[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] can be tricky. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Una[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] is beautiful too, but I think [name_f]Oona[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] just has that perfect balance of uniqueness and ease.

[name_f][/name_f]

As for nicknames, maybe Ooni[name_f][/name_f] or even O[name_f][/name_f] could work? [name_m]Or[/name_m] something more playful like Noni[name_f][/name_f]?

[name_f][/name_f]

If I were to pick siblings for Oona/Una/Oonagh[name_f][/name_f], I’d lean into names that feel just as sleek and timeless [name_f][/name_f]- maybe [name_f]Clara[/name_f][name_f][/name_f], [name_f]Eden[/name_f][name_f][/name_f], or [name_f]Maeve[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] for girls, and [name_m]Felix[/name_m][name_f][/name_f], [name_m]Jude[/name_m][name_f][/name_f], or [name_m]Rhys[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] for boys.

[name_f][/name_f]

For middles, I think something classic but a little unexpected would be perfect [name_f][/name_f]- like [name_f]Oona[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f][name_f][/name_f], [name_f]Una[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f][name_f][/name_f], or [name_f]Oonagh[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f][name_f][/name_f]. What do you think?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

Definitely [name_f]Oona[/name_f] and without making the same comments I agree with @tori101

[name_f]Oona[/name_f] is my personal favourite! I love the … symmetry is not what it is, but that’s all I can think of for the double O. [name_f]Una[/name_f] always looks like ‘one’ to me and for [name_f]Oonagh[/name_f], I just don’t love the look of Gs in general.

My wife has the same reservations about Oonagh due to Amber Heard, but I would say that only those who have bothered to look her up/followed the trial closely would know her daughter is named that, but I would then argue most wouldn’t care enough to remember. Have you considered Orla too? It means Golden Princess.

(Being Irish and living in America, I’ve heard many pronounce Una as “You-na” rather than “Oo-na” )

I love all the spellings, Una is the Irish spelling so I’m more partial to that, but I adore the spunky energy of Oona slightly more as of recent!

Nicknames for Oonagh/Oona/Una:

  • Oonie and Oons are simple, affectionate diminutives.

  • Mo Úna’ (meaning ‘my Oona’) is a traditional option, especially in Irish-speaking households.
  • Lamby or Little Lamb could be sweet nicknames as a baby with the meaning being ‘Lamb’.
