Opal Association & Opinion

I keep coming back to Opal, my husband likes it, and virtually all other names I like are a bit too odd or have unclear pronunciations that make me uncertain the wearer, my hypothetical daughter (TTC) would enjoy having the name. Opal hasn’t been too high on my list I think primarily because I wrote a character into a fanfiction named Opal when I was a teenager and that’s my only association :joy: I loved the character but it’s still cringey. So does anyone have better associations I can try to think of instead? lol

I’ve always liked the name and it ticks a lot of boxes for me: not common, old-fashioned, simple to spell, easy to pronounce, and has a nickname ending in Y as I consider Polly a nickname for Opal even if it’s not commonly used. I think it sounds great with my existing child’s name, Arthur, and I like the nicknames together, Arty & Polly, as well. Though as I’m typing this I realize Arthur & Polly sound like I’m naming them for Peaky Blinders :woman_facepalming: I’m not but I do love Peaky so it’s probably subconscious lol (RIP Aunt Pol/Helen McCrory)

Her full name would be: Opal Daphne Renee S. (ODRS)

I love spunky [name_f]Opal[/name_f], and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is such a sweet nickname!!

[name_f]My[/name_f] main association with [name_f]Opal[/name_f], and probably the reason why I find the name so sweet, is [name_f]India[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f] (who goes by Opal) from the children’s book Because of [name_m]Winn[/name_m]-[name_f]Dixie[/name_f]!! [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is pretty nuanced for a children’s book character, she’s curious, open-minded, brave, and grows a lot through the course of the story. She was a big inspiration for me as a kid. I still enjoy re-reading it today, so I recommend it if you haven’t read it!! All the best associations with [name_f]Opal[/name_f].

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f] is beautiful!

I will definitely add that to my reading list! Thank you

I love [name_f]Opal[/name_f]! [name_m]Ive[/name_m] never met one - my associations are quirky, elegant, spunky, intelligent, witty. Stylish in an offbeat way.

I wish my husband would agree, but it’s too unusual for him so I won’t get the chance to use it.

[name_f]My[/name_f] main association is really just the gemstone. It’s pretty, but definitely on the unusual side. I’ve never met any [name_f]Opal[/name_f] and haven’t read any book with [name_f]Opal[/name_f] in it either. [name_m]Arty[/name_m] and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] sound really cute together though!

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] is gorgeous!

[name_f]My[/name_f] main association with [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is [name_f]October[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. I strongly feel that [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is the name that conjures up all the romantic, idealised things autumn provides. Falling leaves, pumpkins, soup, oversized cosy jumpers and orange hues.

[name_f]My[/name_f] second association is when [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] was poorly for the first time and in hospital (this makes her sound like a poorly child she isn’t it’s just when she gets a sickness bug I always have to go into hospital with her etc) anyways I was terrified the first time she went into hospital. [name_m]New[/name_m] first time mum, I was on my own all very overwhelming and the lovely nurse that looked after [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] was named Op@l-Mari3. I always remember her partly because of her beautiful name and partly because of her kindness.

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f] is lovely!

I love [name_f]Opal[/name_f]!
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] associations…

  • A beautiful stone - and my first association - it’s just so pretty
  • The birthstone of [name_f]October[/name_f]
  • A beautiful sound - that brilliant O, the distinctive ‘pal’ - just very appealing to me
  • [name_f]Vintage[/name_f] charm - once in the top 100!

I adore [name_f]Opal[/name_f] and am definitely somewhat biased . [name_f]My[/name_f] association is the beautiful gemstone, one of my two favourite precious stones. It also has a sort of moony feel for me because of the pale sheen of the stone, and I’ve always felt an affinity to the moon. Also, [name_f]Opal[/name_f] the gemstone represents hope

I didn’t know [name_f]Opal[/name_f] represents hope, thats actually really sweet as my childhood friend who unfortunately passed away last years’ name was [name_f]Orieana[/name_f] Hopelynn. I considered honoring her more directly but it just made me sad but this way works without being too close to her name. Thank you :two_hearts:

I really like [name_f]Opal[/name_f] too! I think it’s a great stands out - fits in name with the nature connection and gentle vintage feel. It is very similar to [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] to me, but [name_f]Opal[/name_f] has a bit more energy and character!

[name_f]My[/name_f] main connection is also Because of Winn-Dixie, but I confess I’ve only seen the movie and haven’t read the book. The movie is great though and the character is wonderful (bonus that I love the dog breed they used in the movie too - the [name_m]Berger[/name_m] [name_m]Picard[/name_m])

I think it’s a wonderful name and I’d use it in a heartbeat!

I really don’t find [name_f]Opal[/name_f] to be that out there! I know one and no one had any strange reactions to her name, not even my mother who will joke about most names that are unfamiliar to her  It has a simple enough sound that most people wouldn’t be confused by it, even if they’d never heard of it as a name before. As for associations, for me the gemstone really is the only one!

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] is great! I know of two little Opals in my area (Pacific Northwest, USA). I get wholesome, quirky, hipster vibes from her- I could see her in glasses and leg warmers, riding her bike to school with a book bag. For what it’s worth, when I saw the initials ODRS I immediately thought “odors,” but that might just be my brain.

Oof I’m in WA too, I’ve never heard it used around me, I’m so curious what area of WA you’re in but I won’t ask you to disclose that. I also thought that about the initials but I was hoping it was just me :frowning: but Idk if that enough to dissuade me either.

No worries- - we are near [name_m]Portland[/name_m].

Dang me too we must just know different people lol
