Ophelia or Millie?

DH and I are now between [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Millie[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Louise[/name] for our daughter, our only concern with [name]Ophelia[/name] is that she may be easily teased due to the negative Shakespearean character. ([name]Ophelia[/name] commits suicide in [name]Hamlet[/name]). Would this be a realistic problem, or are we just over concerned? We aren’t worried about [name]Millie[/name] aging well, because we live in the UK, and it’s been a very popular name for quite a while, so I imagine there are many adult [name]Millie[/name]'s out there. We also believe a name ages with the bearer. Sibling ideas for each are:

[name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Juliet/name
[name]Edward[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]

[name]Millie[/name]
[name]Joel[/name]
[name]Liam[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Elsie[/name]
[name]Dulcie[/name] (DH said he likes [name]Dulcie[/name]+[name]Millie[/name] as sisters now)

We’ll also take whatever sibling suggestions you have for us

Which should we use, [name]Ophelia[/name] or [name]Millie[/name], and could [name]Ophelia[/name] be easily bullied?

[name]Ophelia[/name] by far. Also prefer the sibling names you listed with [name]Ophelia[/name].

good luck!

I would go with [name]Ophelia[/name] as your daughter will have more options. She can go by her full name or nickname - [name]Philly[/name], [name]Lia[/name], [name]Ollie[/name]. I also prefer the sibling names you have listed under that name.

I personally love the name [name]Millie[/name]

I would choose [name]Ophelia[/name]. Not only do I love the name [name]Ophelia[/name], I also really enjoyed her character.

[name]Ophelia[/name] most defiantly. It’s got an elegance that has survived through many ages, even before [name]Shakespeare[/name]. I don’t think teasing will be a problem. [name]Millie[/name] is sweet, but it may be best saved to be used as a nickname for [name]Millicent[/name] or [name]Melisende[/name].

I would say [name]Millie[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Louise[/name], although both names are beautiful. The only reason I lean this way really is because IDK if this would be as much of an issue in the UK, but I worry about teasing with [name]Ophelia[/name] in the sense that it’s similar to “I feel ya” which could be horrible in middle/high school.

If you’re really in love with the first sibset idea, I think [name]Millicent[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Louise[/name] “[name]Millie[/name]” is to die for. Best of luck!

[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. Beautiful classic name.

I prefer [name]Ophelia[/name]. I can honestly say that I knew [name]Ophelia[/name] was a character in [name]Hamlet[/name], but I didn’t know anything about her until I read the play in high school, and then I promptly forgot that she committed suicide until your post just now. I don’t think sharing a name with that character will make her a target for bullying at all. I think it’s a really beautiful name, and I’d probably consider using it myself.

Thank you, the only name [name]Millie[/name] would be short for is [name]Matilda[/name] though, and it’s been vetoed

[name]Ophelia[/name], not many people are that well-versed in [name]Shakespeare[/name] anyway, so I don’t think it will come up as a problem.
[name]Beatrice[/name] is a perfect pairing with [name]Ophelia[/name]
Good luck!!

[name]Ophelia[/name], by far. I love the name personally, and it fit better in your sibling’s names ideas. As for the teasing, [name]Juliet[/name] also commits suicide, and that’s never been an issue that seems to have affected the popularity of that name.

Another vote for your [name]Ophelia[/name] combo  I love the name so much, its on my own girls’ short list.

[name]Ophelia[/name] by far. [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is stunning. I wouldn’t worry about the teasing potential.

Definitely [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. You just managed to smoosh my top 3 girls’ combos. I don’t really dislike [name]Millie[/name], but there are so many Millies and Tillys and Lilys about it doesn’t feel that special. Also, its basically Northern Irish for a female chav when spelt with a -y, which is something I can never quite see past, although it’s fine if you don’t live in NI.

And regarding [name]Ophelia[/name] getting bullied - how many kids would know that [name]Ophelia[/name] in [name]Hamlet[/name] committed suicide? I daresay they would never have heard of her. I’ve never heard of a [name]Juliet[/name] getting teased based on the same reasons, and she’s much more famous.

Btw, I agree with Whillemina above that [name]Beatrice[/name] is just perfect with [name]Ophelia[/name].

[name]Ophelia[/name] by a long, long, longshot! [name]Millie[/name] always makes me think of mealworms, but [name]Ophelia[/name] is romantic, tragic, beautiful.

[name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. [name]Lovely[/name], classic name.

[name]Millie[/name] is adorable but I only see it as a nickname.

[name]Ophelia[/name]! It’s dramatic, stunning, and elegant. While I personally didn’t like the character (to me she’s unable to stand up for herself and doesn’t have much guts) I like the idea of using a [name]Shakespeare[/name] name, and I liked [name]Hamlet[/name] in general. [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is beautiful. I do find [name]Millie[/name] a bit nicknamey and cutesy, but then again I’m not from the UK and nickname names aren’t that common here.

Well, truth be told, we’ve got a definite name for her, and, it’s going back to one other than [name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Millie[/name]. DH and I could not choose between the two, but, we had both really loved [name]Jemima[/name] in the past. So, we took the combos we had for [name]Jemima[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Millie[/name], and came up with [name]Jemima[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Louise[/name] [name]Cuthbert[/name], with [name]Mia[/name] and [name]Emmy[/name] as her nickname. We both feel that this is the most perfect name for her, and, [name]Ophelia[/name] will just have to go onto my (very long) list of names that I love, but cannot use. Thank you for all the help

I love [name]Ophelia[/name]! To be honest, I don’t think elementary aged children will even be thinking of [name]Shakespeare[/name] at that age, even in high school it shouldnt be an issue, I wouldn’t worry about that at all.
