Hey guys, my husband brought up this name tonight. What do you think? I actually quite like it, it’s a French name (more specifically from Britanny, so Celtic), although Nameberry says it’s Welsh. Either way, do you think it would be too unusual? She certainly would not meet too many with her name around here, although it would fit with more known names such as [name]Bronwen[/name], [name]Rhiannon[/name], [name]Rowena[/name], etc. So, do you think [name]Nolwen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] could work in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name]?
Thanks!
PS: Which spelling do you think is best? [name]Nolwenn[/name], or [name]Nolwen[/name]?
I’ve always liked this name. I think it would certainly work in the U.S. as it’s easy to pronounce with American phonetics. The [name]Nolwenn[/name] spelling strikes me as a bit more feminine, so that’s what I would choose. It’s lovely, it’s unique without being bizarre, and I think it’s a winner!
I just found a french website, where a girl commented on [name]Nolwen[/name]/n. She said her name was spelled [name]Nolwen[/name], and her friends and family called her Nono. (Cute!) She also said she had a friends named Gwena”lle and Ma”wenn.
Overall, I think [name]Nolwenn[/name] is pretty (I agree, -nn looks a bit more feminine). I probably wouldn’t use it for myself, but I don’t think it’s too unusual, and [name]Nolwen[/name]/n [name]Elizabeth[/name] could definitely work in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name].
Thanks for the encouraging words! I also think it’s very pretty, but I’m not sure yet if we’ll be that daring. My favorite nickname for [name]Nolwenn[/name] (like that spelling too) would be [name]Nollie[/name]. Nono is cute (read that post too yesterday), but it doesn’t work in a French Canadian context as nono means silly/stupid. (it’s used as an adjective; feminine would be nounoune).
Ahh… shall we dare, or not. For sure, I would expect a few surprised comments if we picked it. Also, I don’t know if our other favorite names would work with [name]Nolwenn[/name] for future siblings… we like [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Evelyne[/name], [name]Clara[/name] and, for a boy, [name]Nathaniel[/name]. What do you think?
Oh, I like [name]Nollie[/name] way better as a nickname!! Here’s my philosophy on ‘matching’ sibling names: Sure, that’s one way to name your children, but it’s not the only way! I wouldn’t say that [name]Nolwenn[/name] ‘matches’ the other names you like, but does it really need to? Maybe the connection between your children is that they all have names you love! (Or maybe I’m just saying that because we have a daughter named [name]Willow[/name], and if we ever have a son his name will be [name]Solomon[/name]. …not exactly ‘matchy’!)
Hehe, labmama, I like your philosophy, and it’s usually mine too. I don’t know why I’m suddenly hesitating so much! I guess it’s a case of me liking a name very very much, but knowing it would raise quite a few eyebrows if we went with it…
Luckily, we should still have a few more weeks to make our decision. If more people want to share their opinion, they are more than welcome! We are keeping our names a secret until our child’s birth so online forums are our best way to get any type of feedback.
Of course [name]Nolwenn[/name] will raise a few eyebrows. It’s not a common name, but isn’t it so much nicer than [name]Mckenzie[/name], [name]Isabella[/name] etc!! And there will always be people who’ve never heard a particular name. Some people raised their eyebrows at our daughter’s name; [name]Willow[/name]! Really, you’ve never heard of [name]Willow[/name]??? Anyway, it’s a beautiful name, and once people meet your little girl, and hear her name a few times, they’ll think nothing of it! She’ll be [name]Nolwenn[/name] (or whatever you choose), and it will suit her perfectly! [name]Trust[/name] yourself, and go with a name you love!!
Good [name]Luck[/name]! I hope you’ll post an announcement and let us know what you’ve decided on
[name]Nolwenn[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is a beautiful pairing! [name]Nolwenn[/name] was the name of a [name]Breton[/name] saint and yes, it is ununusal but that’s part of it’s charm, don’t you think? In a playground full of Avas, Jaydens and Madisons, [name]Nolwenn[/name] would sure stand out! I think you should be brave and go for it! Regards, [name]Mischa[/name].
Thanks all! I think we’re well on our way of putting this name at the top of our list now. It’s a name that I’ve liked ever since I saw it a couple or more years ago, but never thought I could seriously use it. Funny that it’s now my husband that brings it up.
I’ll be quite happy to read more feedback, and I’ll make sure to let my fellow Berries know what our final decision is (that will certainly have to wait until she’s born though, lol).
