DH and I have been bouncing names around for a while and we discovered we both love the name Alfred nn Freddie! We love unique old-fashioned names that are straightforward and easy to spell and pronounce. Our DD’s name is Ada Marie, and we get lots of compliments about her name.
I know Alfie/Alfred is pretty popular in the UK, but it is still way low in popularity in the US. But, I know of boys between the ages of 1 and 7 named Franklin, Arthur, Walter, William, Kent, George, Simon, Abraham…so clearly “Old Man Names” are coming back into fashion. But there’s still a part of me that worries that Alfred is too old-fashioned.
What do you guys think? Full name would be Alfred James, so AJ could be a nn possibility for him down the road too.
That sounds very cute, and not too old manish, I think it’s just in the right spot right now. [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] or AJ are both great nicknames and [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] is a great name to grow into
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] is one of my favorite names! I don’t think it’s too old man-ish, I feel like it’s making a comeback even in the US. It has modern and classic nickname options, like Al, Alfie, Freddy, Red, which makes it pretty accessible. AJ is cute as well. And there is so much history behind the name! It fits well with your daughter’s name.
I think it’s great! [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] is well established, and like you mentioned, “old man” names are coming back in the US so I think it will be a pleasant surprise. I’m a sucker for that category myself.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I vaguely remember having the same concern when we picked out the name [name_f]Ada[/name_f] for our daughter too haha. I’m glad that you guys also appreciate the name Alfred! Definitely makes me feel more confident with our top choice
Thank you!! I definitely consider Batman’s butler a positive association!
Initial names aren’t my first choice either tbh, but I do like how [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] flows! Our other mn consideration would be [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] William, which sounds fine too.
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband actually could have had an initial nn too but never went by it. Our families are thankfully really respectful so if we told them his nn was [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] I’m confident they’d use that and not AJ
I love Alfred!! I would be so happy to meet a little [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] “Freddie!” I don’t find it too old-man at all, and I am in the US. [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is lovely and AJ fits right in with modern trends if that’s what you’re looking for. I think it’s perfect for you!
I think [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] is lovely, especially with [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] as a nickname. I’m in Australia and know a little boy called [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] ‘Freddie’. I don’t see it as ‘too’ old-fashioned at all; it’s right on trend really with all the Arthurs, Alberts, Theodores etc. And it’s gorgeous with [name_f]Ada[/name_f] (which I just love btw)!
Im in the US and I do think [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] sounds old manly but also cute in a way. [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] is totally approachable! I think people would come around to [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] pretty quickly. [name_m]Ive[/name_m] definitely not met an [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] before!
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is charming! It’s old fashioned, but it’s due for a comeback. Especially w/the adorable nn of Freddie. It’s lovely w/Ada. And I love that [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] is really simple & well known, but you rarely hear it (in the U.S.)
