So my husband and I decided on a name MONTHS ago for the daughter we are expecting at the end of [name]August[/name]. And now he’s having doubts… so I wanted to get some outside feedback.
The name we picked is [name]Asha[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name].
Our last name is a 2-syllable [name]Indian[/name] name (my husband’s family is of [name]Indian[/name] descent) and one of his concerns is that it’s too “ethnic” a name with [name]Asha[/name] and our last name, as well as being too unusual for my rather conservative family (which I don’t think will be an issue, but if it is, I don’t particularly care). At the same time, he’s vetoed just about every other suggestion that I’ve made, and hasn’t given any of his own (he’s only come up with a list of names that he doesn’t want to use…). I’m at a loss for what to do… I’d love some feedback on what you guys think of [name]Asha[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name].
I don’t think ‘too ethnic’ should be a concern (I’ve spent years searching for any indication of ‘ethnicity’ beyond European in my family tree…found a bit, but not enough to brag about :-). It’s a lovely name, and easy to understand/pronounce, so no worries!
I think [name]Asha[/name] is a beautiful name with a lovely meaning. And although I knew it was an [name]Indian[/name] name, it doesn’t seem very “ethnic” to me, probably because there are a lot of names starting with [name]Ash[/name]-, and [name]Asha[/name] is easy to spell and pronounce.
[name]Asha[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] is a great name! I hope your husband overcomes his doubts about it.
I love the name [name]Asha[/name] and [name]Genevieve[/name]! I am of [name]Indian[/name] descent and I have been racking my brains to come with names that reflect our heritage and also are easy to pronounce. [name]Asha[/name] means so many wonderful things too - life, hope and peace.
[name]Asha[/name] is really very lovely and I’d be happy to see an [name]Asha[/name] running about. I could picture an [name]Asha[/name] of any ethnicity. It doesn’t seem particularly ‘ethnic’ to me.
Gorgeous! I think honoring your heritage is a wonderful thing. [name]Asha[/name] does that, but remains very easy to spell and prn. I really [name]Genevieve[/name] as well.
I have a little red headed cousin named [name]Asha[/name]. I don’t think it’s too ethnic at all. It works on anyone really. In regards to Larkub101 – my cousin says it [name]Ash[/name]-uh.
I think it’s very striking and [name]Asha[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] is a gorgeous combo!
[name]Asha[/name] is very pretty and I don’t think you should be concerned about it sounding too ethnic. I think it’s great when people celebrate their heritage! [name]Asha[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] is a lovely combo.
[name]Just[/name] FYI, [name]ASHA[/name] is the acronym used for the national organization that certifies my profession (American Speech-Language Hearing Association.) So for most speech pathologists and audiologists, the name [name]Asha[/name] immediately brings to mind [name]ASHA[/name]. I’m sure that probably doesn’t bother you, but I thought I’d let you know that association is there, (not that it’s a bad one!)
I think Asha Genevieve is absolutely beautiful! And I think the fact that it happens to sound ‘ethnic’ is a non-issue! It’s probably one of my favorite combos as of late! I would say use it, definitely.
Thanks for the positive feedback everyone!! I absolutely adore [name]Asha[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] (I like the ah-shuh pronunciation) and I’m going to keep fighting for it, especially since DH hasn’t actually offered any alternative suggestions. I suspect/hope he’s mostly nervous about the finality of making a decision
