Opinions on Blanche?

WDYT of [name]Blanche[/name]? Any name combo ideas?

I’m sorry, and this totally just my opinion, but I’m not really a fan. It just sounds like the word blanch to me, as in to drain of color. The sound is harsh and not very attractive. Also, I strongly associate [name]Blanche[/name] with the character from the [name]Golden[/name] Girls, ie old and lascivious.

I immediately think [name]Golden[/name] Girls too. Although [name]Blanche[/name] is a great character on the show! Secondly, I think of blanching food. It’s just not a very attractive name to me, sorry. :frowning:

I immediately though, “Like the [name]Golden[/name] Girl?” If that is the connection you are after, her last name is much more appealing. [name]Devereaux[/name]! She could be [name]Devi[/name] for short.

Innately boring. Not fun to say. Dislike. Sorry to any [name]Blanche[/name]'s out there, you are equally welcome to dislike my name.

Sorry, I agree with the other posts. In addition it reminds me of the word bland. And as that word means lacking in strong characteristics and therefore uninteresting…well, I could never name my child that. Sorry.

Not a huge fan.

Why not? It’s so uncool that it’s cool. I’m curious to know what last name, it’s first initial and number of syllables, we’re dealing with to pair it off. With such a vintage one syllable name, you should pair it with something with more syllables like [name]Virginia[/name] or other three syllable name. Despite its brevity, you could always nickname her [name]Bea[/name] as well. The good thing is that her future boss or other authority figures won’t likely inquire which [name]Blanche[/name] you’re talking about.

The only thing it makes me think of is that it’s literally “white” in French. I don’t like the sound or the associations. Sorry :frowning:

[name]Blanche[/name] makes me think of [name]Blanca[/name] (Spanish) & Blandine (French).

I’m pretty sure they are all forms of the the name Blandina, [name]Saint[/name] Blandina a second century slave who was martyred in [name]Lyons[/name].

Yes PP! I forgot about [name]Blanca[/name] and I prefer it to [name]Blanche[/name].

Anyway, my first impression was of [name]Blanche[/name] from Coronation [name]Street[/name]. Not the most attractive image. But like a lot of dated names ([name]Geoffrey[/name], [name]Lionel[/name], [name]Joan[/name], [name]Leonard[/name]) it had great use in the Middle Ages, so now I’m thinking of damsels or anyone looking like [name]Queen[/name] [name]Isabella[/name] in Braveheart. I’d quite like to meet a young [name]Blanche[/name]

For middles, I’d jazz it up a bit. Judging by the names in your signature, you’ll be better at that than me.

[name]Blanche[/name] is awesome. [name]Blanche[/name] [name]Stuart[/name] [name]Scott[/name] was the first female test pilot and presumably the first American woman to fly an airplane solo. (And [name]Blanche[/name] Leathers was the first woman to captain a steamboat on the Mississippi!) There are also a lot of royal women who answered to [name]Blanche[/name]: [name]Blanche[/name] of Castile (b. 1188) who became [name]Queen[/name] of [name]France[/name]; [name]Blanche[/name] of [name]Navarre[/name] (b. 1177) [name]Countess[/name] of Champagne; [name]Blanche[/name] of Artois (b.1248); and [name]Blanche[/name] of [name]Navarre[/name], from the 14th century, was also another [name]Queen[/name] of [name]France[/name]. (And there are more!) The character on [name]Golden[/name] Girls, in my opinion, is a plus: she was the life of the party, smart, strong and had heaps of charisma. If you can have [name]Blair[/name] and [name]Brooke[/name] be popular, why not [name]Blanche[/name]?

I think that [name]Blanche[/name] is a fantastic choice. I think of [name]Blanche[/name] du Bois from A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and [name]Blanche[/name] of Castile (and many other medieval princesses in Western Europe). I also think it has a cool hipster vibe like [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name]. Thanks to the poster who mentioned Blandine , another interesting French choice which I would love to hear on an American child. I just love [name]Blanche[/name] as well as Blandine. Very fashionable , cutting edge naming…

[name]Love[/name] [name]Blanche[/name] and totally think it’s time for a comeback.

[name]Blanche[/name] is a beautiful name! It has a French elegance that has been ignored for a long time! And it has so much more meaning then [name]Golden[/name] Girls…

It was the name of an old lady on my street when I grew up. She was a lovely person but I find it impossible to imagine her name on a child.

Not really a fan sorry  I don’t find it attractive for a little girl plus I think of the play A [name]Street[/name] Car Named Desire and [name]Blanche[/name] was not a very good character. So that is what comes to my mind.

I don’t really care for the sound of it (too nasally with the “anch”), but I think it is a lovely name in and of itself.

I think it’s a bit off for a first name, but [name]Selina[/name] [name]Blanche[/name] or another vaguely artsy name could work.

I personally love [name]Blanche[/name]. It was my great-grandmother’s name and is on my list of names to use as middles for future daughters. I also really loved the [name]Golden[/name] Girls character, but I see associations past that. I think it could be spiced up with a pretty middle - [name]Blanche[/name] [name]Clementine[/name], [name]Blanche[/name] [name]Melusine[/name], or (I see this on your list) [name]Blanche[/name] [name]Wednesday[/name] (or whatever day of the week she was born!) would be lovely.
