Opinions on Dharma?

Still here stumped on girl names.
Earlier I remembered [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] and [name_m]Greg[/name_m] I used to watch years ago.
I dont think iv ever heard it as a name outside of that programme.

I love one off one of a kind style names.

Possible nn Dharm/Dharmie?

Thoughts?

I like it! I love something about the Dh at the beginning.

Looking it up, I’ve found it’s a name of an [name_f]Asian[/name_f] religion - this makes me wonder about its usability.

Apart from that, [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] is a cool-looking name.

I just think of [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] and [name_m]Greg[/name_m] and I always thought if her name was [name_f]Karma[/name_f] I’d like it more. But I just looked up that it means truth which I think is really cool actually. It could grow on me. I just wish I didn’t associate it with the show because I wasn’t really a fan.

I’m not familiar with the TV show. I would expect someone named [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] to be Hindu or Buddhist.

It has a nice sound but I think it might be a bit insensitive to use it as a non-Buddhist. Not sure though as I’m not a buddhist myself. What about Dhalia, [name_f]Daria[/name_f], or [name_f]Alma[/name_f]?

I do like the sounds though it does seem to be very important in Buddhism

It’s such an important part of religion, that I think it might be inappropriate and offensive for someone not of that faith to use. Sorry!

Perhaps you’d like [name_f]Darya[/name_f], [name_u]Dara[/name_u], [name_f]Daya[/name_f]/Daia, [name_f]Darla[/name_f], [name_f]Deena[/name_f], [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Delta[/name_f], [name_f]Dessa[/name_f], [name_f]Dinah[/name_f], [name_u]Carmen[/name_u], [name_f]Carmella[/name_f], [name_f]Charm[/name_f], or [name_u]Harmony[/name_u]?
Good luck!!

I agree with @regionlatbest, wouldn’t be appropriate to use this as a name if you aren’t of the religion or culture because of its significance.

They are all fair points and I understand.
Iv mentioned names before and people have pointed out religion.
I always wonder if a name like [name_u]Christian[/name_u] would get the same response.
To me [name_u]Christian[/name_u] is quite a popular name yet if you are a [name_u]Christian[/name_u] you follow that faith is it the same or different in context?

To me it would depend on the context. I would expect the parents of someone named [name_u]Christian[/name_u] to be at least culturally [name_u]Christian[/name_u], even if they’re not religiously practicing. If you’re a practicing Muslim or Hindu, then I think [name_u]Christian[/name_u] would be a strange name to choose because it doesn’t represent your religion or culture at all (if that makes sense?).

Not appropriate imo. Like [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] and [name_u]Messiah[/name_u] aren’t appropriate.

…and is it pronounced like Dar-ma? Like [name_m]Jeffrey[/name_m] Dahmer? :grimacing:

Its pretty, but doesn’t quite feel appropriate if you aren’t a part of that religion, as it does have quite some significance.

One-off/one-of-a-kind style names are gorgeous, but when they’re overlapping with other religions and cultures, I’d say it’s too much.

I’m Buddhist, and the [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] refers to the Buddha’s teachings. Most Buddhists value and respect the [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] a lot and don’t really regard it as a name.
It is pronounced; DHR - meh/mah.

Oh man I used to watch that show, too!!

I wouldnt name a kid [name_f]Dharma[/name_f]. I’d prefer [name_f]Daria[/name_f], [name_f]Delia[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]…

I think it would be more like naming a child Buddhist or Jewish, save for the fact that those aren’t really established names the way [name_u]Christian[/name_u] is.

The name [name_u]Christian[/name_u] would be funny on someone who isn’t one, but I also think it’s becoming more of an established mainstream name in a way something like [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] is not. And [name_u]Christian[/name_u] is regarded as a name in [name_u]Christian[/name_u] religious cultures where, as others have pointed out, [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] isn’t used as a name by people of that culture.

I’m muting this thread now as have enough opinions thankyou

Considering that Christianity is a very inclusive religion I dont think the name [name_u]Christian[/name_u] would be an issue for anyone. Unless you lived somewhere that actively persecuted Christians but that would be a different kind of problem.

Dharma actually reminds me of the name of this store [name_m]Ive[/name_m] bought tye dye supplies from! It doesn’t really sound like a persons name to me

Reminds me of the [name_f]Dharma[/name_f] Initiative on Lost… I personally wouldn’t use it. But if you really like it I don’t see a problem with it.

It makes me think of skin and pharmacy…
